Thought that I could let someone know what happened to John White, who was ranked number 1 in state in his division. At Regionals, John was taken out with an illegal throw, I have a video of the opposing wrestler intentionally holding his arm down at the wrist and slamming him down on the mat head first. John’s head glances off the mat first, spraining those muscles at the top of his shoulder, then he takes the full impact at the point of his left shoulder, separating his AC. John continued to wrestle in pain that day. Next match he was pinned, and the opposing coach, North Mason, met John with an ice bag. Second match he lost by one point. Third match, which gave him 5th at Regionals, John won.
The most amazing thing is not that John continued wrestle with his left arm held at his side, wrestling one armed, but that he had a broken right wrist, that back in September/October he broke playing football. Many times I asked him if he needed to see the doctor, and he would say, if he didn’t use it it wold feel better. Shortly after John won Clark County, I made him go to the doctor, who sent him to an orthopedist, who did xrays and CAT scan on the wrist. It basically, was not going to get any better or worse without surgery, and the doctor left it up to John, who is 18, whether he wanted to wrestle or not. If you note the picture of John’s win at Clark County, he can’t extend his wrist and put any weight on it, so he would curl it back into a fist.
I was sorry to see him go as far as he did and do as well as he did, broken wrist and all, to have the opportunity taken away from him.
He had surgery last Thursday and hopefully the two pieces of bone will knit back together successfully if there is a good blood supply, otherwise if it doesn’t in three months, then he will have surgery again and have a bone graft and then three more months in a cast.
