Marysville and Elma Freestyle Tournaments

USA Everett opened the freestyle season with representatives at two separate tournaments this weekend. A number of the younger wrestlers attended the Marysville event which is a "pick your opponent" tournament. This is a practice tournament with no scores kept and no set weight groups. Wrestlers are paired by closest age and weight and can decide to wrestle someone or not to wrestle that person. Also at this tournament were Brian Shaw and Joe Kubec who just last week were both in the State AAAA High School Finals.

The rest of the 14 and under team was at Elma, WA. Scores and placings are awarded at this tournament and the USA Everett contingent did well. Tony Kubec took first place in the 12 and under 75 lb class while his younger brother Kelly took first in the 10 and under 55 lb class. Zach Burnett was first in the 10 and under 75 lb division and Blake Tate finished in 2nd place in the 12 and under 80 lb division. Blake lost a tough overtime decision to the champion in his group. Washington State Prep Wrestling Championships

The USA Everett wrestlers had great success while competing for their individual high school teams at the Washington State Prep Wrestling Championships. Fourteen of our team members medaled, nine were in championship bouts with four of them winning first-place.

In the 2A competition we had Juan Badillo as champion in the 135 lb. division.

In the 3A portion of the tournament we had six wrestlers in the finals. At 122 we had Eric Burnett of Sedro Woolley in first-place winning by a score of 5-1 in the finals. Next was Garrett O'Brien of Bellingham who lost a tough to decision to a defending state champion at 129. Coyte Cooper of Anacortes defended his 1997 championship by winning a close decision in the 141 lb. division. The tournament announcer noted the both Coyte and his opponent have 3.90+ GPA's!! Competing at 148 was Tyson Springer from Monroe. Tyson controlled the match until the very end of the third round when his opponent scored three points to tie up the match. His opponent then scored a take down to win the title in sudden death overtime. Mike Bundy of Lake Stevens also defended his 1997 championship winning about 168 lb. division. Jon Maley of Anacortes competed in the 190 lb. division and had the misfortune of being on the receiving end of a five point throw to start to match. Jon fought back hard but couldn't overcome the five points and ultimately lost 9-4.

Two of our wrestlers were in the finals of the 4A competition. At 141 Joe Kubec of Marysville lost to a two-time defending state champion. At 168 Brian Shaw, also of Marysville, lost his first match of the year and finished in second place.
