Vs. USA Everett (and friends) recap

By Dave Gilbertson

List of wrestlers competing

The Ohio All-Stars match against USA Everett (and friends) took place on August 2, 2000 at the Everett High School wrestling room. The wrestling started at approximately 7:00 P.M. and went on until a little after 10:00. During that time we got in approximately 50 matches. We would like to thank the wrestlers from other Washington teams that showed up to wrestle in slots where we did not have someone to wrestle. From the Southwest Washington Wrestling Club we had Trevor Hall and Brandon Sitch. The Eastside club sent up Michael McAlister, David Howard and Kyle Morrow. Brent Stover of the Bethel club came up and wrestled as well. We did not use set weight groups but instead matched wrestlers from Washington against Ohio All-Stars as closely as we could based on age and weight. Sometimes we had the weight advantage and some matches they had the weight advantage but in the end it probably worked out about even. Unfortunately we couldn't get matches for all their wrestlers in the upper weights while in the lighter weights they had three matches each.

We appreciate Justin Davidson and Brent Stover's willingness to wrestle up 6-7 pounds on a couple of matches so that the Ohio kids would get a bout. Team score is not kept in this event however the Ohio team Director does track wins and losses for his kids. I think he said that Washington came out one match ahead. They have been all over the Western states but he informed me that this was their first time ending up on the short end of the score, and they have been on the road for five weeks! Just like our Washington state team showed the country at the Junior Duals in Oklahoma, the Washington Schoolboys showed they know how to battle too! As a state we need to continue developing the wrestlers that we have and encourage others to join in. I think that with the group of second-year Novices moving into Schoolboy next year, along with the current group of first-year Schoolboys that will still be in the division, Washington could have an absolutely devastating depth in the Schoolboy division at nationals, especially in the lower weights. If there is enough interest next year maybe the state of Washington can put together a team to compete at the Schoolboy Duals in Indiana. Just something for discussion at the Fall meeting.

Next stop for the Ohio All-Stars will be in Tacoma on August 3, 2000 and then again in Bellingham on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000. The team Director has already expressed a desire to return to our state for a 3rd year in a row in 2001.

My personal memories of evening where as follows:

Nathan Decker taking apart John Mangini. I have seen Mangini's name all over the web over the years. He has won the Tournament of Champions twice, been AAU Folkstyle Champ, Eastern Nationals finalists, etc. John is a good wrestler and in talking to him, seems like a good kid. Nathan totally dominated in all three matches he wrestled.

Tony Kubec winning a tough match by scoring a cheap tilt right before the end of the match to come from behind and win by one point. His cousin Kenny Kubec also waiting until the last moment to score and win by one against Battaglia.

Jonny Gilbertson teching Kyle Fluke 10-0 in freestyle after getting pinned by him in Tulsa last January.

Matt Kyler of Ohio absolutely dominating everyone including my son who was around 4 pounds heavier than Matt.

I was busy lining up bouts that night and "mentally" I missed a lot of matches so don't feel bad if I didn't mention you. Everyone in the room wrestled their hearts out and we look forward to the 2001 match. I would also recommend those that like to travel to consider entering the Tournament of Champions in Ohio next year. It will be held on April 21, 2001. The Ohio Tournament of Champions Web Page talks about qualifiers but for the Northwest I am the contact to get entry forms. If you are interested next year then contact me for more info.
