Craig Forster of Blaine has a new website that I am informing our readers about. I don't usually link to commercial sales sites but Craig is a good supporter of kids wrestling in Washington. Their club came through on short notice last year to host the Kids state folkstyle tournament. The link is Cauliflowerear.com and a permanent link can be found in the future on our Links page.

I would like to acknowledge a few of our officials for working at the Western Regional tournament this year. Fred Pulphus, Mark Chelsen and Brian Garvie all went to Pocatello and volunteered their time to officiate. I understand in talking to Fred and Mark that it was quite a "learning experience" since the intensity of dads and coaches is very high at Regionals. I think that Brian has been there a few times before as he has been officiating for several years. Officiating at that level will only make them better and able to help the rest of the state's officials to continue to "improve our game." I personally thought the way calls where made at Regionals was too liberal in the three point throw areas. They weren't "bad calls" they were just consistently called differently than at Nationals At Regionals if you did an arm spin (or a head and arm) to the belly and then cranked them more than five seconds later, you got three points as "continuation." This was done by the vast majority of officials. To me, five seconds is not "continuation" and I think that it is only two points. At the Kids Nationals they only gave two points unless you threw them to their back. Hopefully we will get that clarified at a officials clinic before the season starts so we know how it should be scored at ALL tournaments, instead of the variation I saw.

I remember talking to Jack Roller of the Tulsa Nationals and he said he brings in refs from all over the country because he said different regions call things differently. He said a lot of the coaches wanted the Oklahoma refs because they all call things the same way but Jack said he felt the wrestlers should be exposed to the officiating from different areas so they don't get surprised somewhere. I agree but I hope that in Freestyle and Greco we can get some more consistency between Regionals and Nationals. Passivity is another thing that we need to call more often during the regular season because kids and coaches need to get used to it as it will be called at higher level tournaments, as it should. I thought that the officiating at the Nationals was exceptional and I don't even remember seeing what I would say was a "bad call" but I'm sure some did occur. Thanks goes out to Lou (I don't know his last name) for officiating at kids Nationals. Lou is consistently one of the best refs at every tournament I see him at and represents Washington very well.

Chet Slevin of the USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the AAU Grand Nationals in Dayton, Ohio on 07/01/2000. He competed in the Cadet 160.5 lb division and took first place in Sombo, Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Nobody could stop his gut wrench and his dad said that he felt that his "top" wrestling is what won the tournament. Being a first year Cadet, in Sombo he was able to use submission holds on three different wrestlers. In the finals he won 1-0 in a very brutal match, the kid did a flying scissor arm submission hold on Chet, but went out of bounds. The kid had it locked up and very tight.

Here is a breakdown per state of the medalists at Western Regionals: CA 114,OR 87,WA 82, ID 81,UT 79,WY 68, AK 44, MT 42, AZ 42, NV 32

The national tournament was a very enjoyable experience for us, especially since so many more Washington people attended this year. It was nice to have the section of seats full of Washington people to cheer on all the kids that were there. The state can be proud of how all the kids performed and behaved. The state of Washington won nine individual national championships this year which is the most we have ever done at this tournament. I imagine that if the tournament is held in Fresno, California next year that the numbers will be even higher because it will be so much closer to where we live. The next event upcoming is the Ohio All-Stars team visit during the first week of August. I will be posting a list of proposed matches and will be looking for wrestlers from other teams to fill in the gaps where we do not have wrestlers of our own. The Ohio All-Stars are also scheduled to have dual meets in the Bellingham area as well as in the Tacoma area. Contact me by e-mail if you would like to propose a wrestler for that slot. Even if we don't have a slot on our team you are welcome to come to the event at the Everett High School wrestling room and see if you can "pick up a match" after the first two rounds are completed.

I just got back from Kids Nationals and will put up a report later this week. The results are at the USA Wrestling web site. I received the following report from Tom Shaw by email while I was gone.

We took 11 kids for 12 weights to the National Duals in Oklahoma City last week. Action started in Greco with 22 teams. The top 8 were seeded. Washington was seeded 5th. We were undefeated in our pool. We Beat : Colorado 43-5; Texas, 39-9, fourth seeded Wisconsin 27-21; California, 29-19; North Dakota 25-23; Kansas, 30-17; Lost to top ranked Minnesota in the semi-finals 21-27; and beat Iowa in the 3rd/4th Finals, 32-16. We got physically dinged during the Greco wars, finally losing during our 8th meet by one match against Minnesota, the # 1 seed with 8 All-Americans. After winning the consolation finals in Greco, we were wrestling freestyle three hours later. 32 teams competed. We had four wrestlers with icebags taped to their limbs and were physically exhausted and beat up. We lost to Illinois,21- 29, making them look good. then forfeited 9 weights to California as only two wrestlers were still in OK uninjured condition at 8 PM. Both who wrestled, destroyed their California opponents. We went to bed, arose, battled three rounds forfeiting four matches against each state, Missouri, Indiana, and then New York, yet we beat each of them. Then fourth ranked New Jersey beat us by two points 24-26 when we had to forfeit five weights. We ended the day beating Oklahoma 26-24, but lost a sixth wrestler. We had a rotator cuff injury, hyper extensions, separated ribs, torn or stretched elbow ligaments, sprained ankle... and countless battlewounds , ie cuts, aches, pulls, and pains. Forfeiting 6 weights meant we would have to pin every opponent to tie a meet in advanced rounds, therefore we withdrew. If healthy, we could have EASILY been top four in freestyle. We brought 3 wrestlers that had never competed in Greco Roman before in their lives. 1 Freshman, 3 Cadets, 5 seniors, and 3 juniors. Other teams had 12 wrestlers who had back-up men to relieve them and keep them fresh. Our wrestlers had no break, tough opponents, 9 AM til 9 PM schedule. These Washington Kids did an O U T S T A N D I N G job representing us. The announcer was paying special attention to our "underdogged" dominance from the third meet on in the first day. Coach Brian Shaw and Pairer Karen Ebel were impacting role players as well. Some parents came and supported the team, a club coach and his wife flew in to support the squad. Behavior was excellent. Outstanding young men represented us.

I particularly want to thank Chuck and Sherry Bullard for personally donating about $750 to support the team trip. In addition I commend The Bellingham "Sons of Thunder" WC for supporting their athlete. And finally, all of the clubs and coaches that have developed and trained these fine young Washington citizens who are admirable both on and off of the mat. Two Washington Athletes were undefeated in all matches. Graham Morin at 154 Pinned or Tech Falled every opponent in the first period in his 15 meets until his final match, which he won 14-10. Michael "Ivan" Christian was a target that every state tried their best to beat. Sorry, fellas, "Ivan," er, Michael went 15-0, made us look outstanding. He finally met his match when he and 8 other teammates were unsuccessful in their epic 5-minute struggle to throw young coach Shaw into a parking lot pond.

98 Selah Freshman Zack Morgan Greco Roman 3-5; Freestyle 5-1

The USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Washington State Kids Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Sedro Woolley, WA on April 30, 2000. In a dramatic display of power USA Everett placed 22 wrestlers in the top six at state and had eight individual champions.

The team was lead by four wrestlers that each won a fourth state freestyle title. In the Novice division Kelly Kubec of Everett defeated his teammate Kai Bruno of Edmonds in the finals at 65 lbs for his fourth state freestyle title. His brother Tony Kubec and Jonny Gilbertson, also of Everett both won state titles for the fourth time in the Schoolboy division and neither wrestler allowed even a single point to be scored against them throughout the tournament. No one made it past the first minute in any of Gilbertson's matches. Nathan Decker of Anacortes was the final wrestler of the group to win a fourth title and did it in dramatic fashion by beating a former state champion in the finals by fall. Update 2/27/00 5:00pm : Dave,

As you may have heard, Mike Hess, one of our Washington mat officials was found collapsed outside his hotel room in Las Vegas. Mike was there officiating the Junior Regionals, Women Open, Veteran's, Hearing impaired, and National Opens. Many people in the state know Mike and would be interested in knowing the status of his health.

At this time I know they have ruled out stroke, heart attack and feel reasonably sure there is no brain damage. Mike is on a ventilator and they have tried to take him off, but is not breathing on his own yet. He does have a very serious blood infection and extremely high blood pressure that the medicine hasn't helped much as yet. He had not regained consciousness as of Tuesday night (Mike was found Thursday night). Mike's twin daughters and husbands are there with him as well as his sister.

I don't know if you could post this on your web page, but I know the wrestling family of Washington would want to know. Let me know what you can do. Thank you!

From the minutes of the last association meeting: "The 2000 Spring General Member Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 29th, 2000 at the conclusion of the first day of the Kid's State tournament at Sedro-Woolley High School. The start time of the meeting will be announced at the tournament. This is a General Membership meeting and all individuals are invited to attend. Plan on participating and having your club represented."

April 26, 2000

Mike Hess, the wrestling coach at Edmonds-Woodway High School (4A), on Saturday in Las Vegas suffered a life threatening stroke. Mike was found in his hotel hall unconscious and not breathing. As of Tuesday morning, Mike regained consciousness and was responding to questions but cannot talk due to being on a ventilator. Mike needs our prayers for him and his family. He is not out of the woods by any means. He is still in critical condition. Thank you, Del Christian for the information on Mike.

If you hadn't heard, a family named Knapp from Eagle Point, OR was traveling to Reno to compete in the Reno World of Wrestling Championships and were involved in an automobile accident. The wrestler was in serious condition in the hospital and his parents and sibling were killed. The Reno tournament had a way to contribute financial help and Joe Kubec started a collection going from the Washington clubs. Over $400.00 was raised from USA Everett, Vision Quest, SteelClaw, Concrete and Peninsula Wrestling Clubs to help in this tragic situation. We would like to thank all the individuals that contributed to the cause plus send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and teammates involved in this terrible disaster.

USA Everett Wrestling Team sent a group of 10 wrestlers to the Viper Quad State Freestyle tournament in Spokane, WA on April 15, 2000. Medal winners are listed by age group.

On April 7-9, 2000 15 members of the USA Everett Wrestling Club battled grapplers from around the nation at the Reno World of Wrestling Championships at Reno, NV. With over 2000 wrestlers competing over three days the competition was high but USA Everett managed to place five wrestlers in the medals.

Jonny Gilbertson lead the team medal winners with a second place finish in his division after losing to Ben Ashmore of Texas in the finals. Ashmore was a Trinity Award winner in 1999. George King also made the finals in his division where he lost to Collin Palmer of Ohio, another Trinity Award winner from 1999. After the Palmer match King lost in the "wrestle back for second" and ended up in 3rd place.

A new wrestler to the team this year is Joshua Villani of Everett who placed 3rd in his division of the 6 and under age group. Also taking a third place medal was Nathan Decker who lost a tough match in the semi-finals. Although Decker didn't get to wrestle in the finals against Jake Swenson most observers thought he should have. Swenson knew Decker should have been in the finals and wrestled him in an exhibition match after the official final was done. That was a great match to watch. They had Boyd Ballard officiate the contest and although the score wasn't kept, you could tell it was a very good match which Swenson probably won. Swenson won the Trinity Award in 2000 with this title and is working towards the USAW Triple Crown this year after winning the USAW Folkstyle Nationals in Kansas on April 2, 2000.

Kenny Kubec suffered a first round loss but came back through the consolation bracket to place 4th which was duplicated by Zack Zwiefel in the 10 and under division. Complete results are as follows:

6 and under: Joshua Villani, Everett, age 7, 3rd at 55 lbs.

10 and under: George King, Marysville, age 9, 3rd at 31 lbs, Zack Zwiefel, Mount Vernon, age 10, 4th at 55 lbs.

12 and under: Jonny Gilbertson, Everett, age 12, 2nd at 67 lbs, Nathan Decker, Anacortes, age 13, 3rd at 80 lbs, Kenny Kubec, Marysville, age 12, 4th at 64 lbs.

Chet Sleven of USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Canada National Championships in Abbotsford, B.C. on 04/08/2000. Chet placed 2nd at 167 lbs in the Cadet division.

On a more local level a number of USA wrestlers entered the Norseman Classic in Poulsbo, WA. The results that were reported are as follows:

PeeWee: Zach Duncan, age 6, 1st at 40 lbs.

Midget: Thomas Hall Jr, Everett, age 10, 2nd at 55 lbs, Jacob Murray, Monroe, age 9, 2nd at 70 lbs.

Novice: Andy Duncan, age 11, 2nd at 60 lbs, Kai Bruno, Lynnwood, age 11, 2nd at 75 lbs.

Junior: Jared Mirsky, Monroe, age 17, 2nd at 132 lbs.

Burke Barnes of the Lake Stevens Berzerker Club competed at the 2000 FILA Cadet Freestyle Championships at Evanston, Ill., April 9, 2000. Burke was in the 54 kg/119 lbs group where he placed 3rd in Freestyle and 4th in Greco-Roman. I believe that this is the 3rd year in a row that Barnes has placed in the top three at this event (he entered while a schoolboy one year).

April 2, 2000

Tony Kubec of Everett place second at USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Nationals in Topeka, KS by a score of 4-5 on April 2, 2000. Tony had a 4-3 lead with 12 seconds to go but his opponent was able to score a two point move to win the match. Tony competed in the 100 lb Schoolboy group and his brother Kelly competed at Novice 60. Kelly went 5-2 and finished one match away from placing in the medals. Tony is an eight-grader at Eisenhower Middle School while Kelly is a sixth-grader at Jefferson Elementary School.

April 2, 2000

The 2000 edition of the I-5 a West Coast Championships is now history and I'm happy to report that it ended up being a very competitive and successful tournament. We were a couple wrestlers shy of 600 which was up by 75 from last year. I was glad see the good turnout, especially in light of the fact that several tournaments have been light in attendance this year. The day got off to a rocky start when some of our tournament gear was at a team members house who was out-of-town for the weekend. There was also some mix up on who was bringing the USA Wrestling cards to sell so those were unavailable during the first hour of registration.

Despite these early setbacks things got rolling and seemed to go relatively smooth the rest of the way. I would like to thank the Sedro-Woolley SteelClaw club for helping us out at the last-minute by bringing their tournament gear down to the us and for sticking around at the end to help us move some of the mats back to the junior high schools. We owe them"pay backs" in the form of our help at the kids state tournament that they host at the end of this month. Jay Jackson, the tournament director and coach from Marysville High School, worked hard all day (and all week) to keep things moving in the right direction. This was Jays first year as director of the I-5 Championships. Thanks to all the other teams that helped by providing referees and table help. I would like to especially thank the Haas family from the Eastside club who provided the table help (and moral support) ALL DAY at the table where I was the referee. Thanks also goes out to Fred Pulphus for accepting the responsibility of being head official, as well as everyone who performed the thankless job of being a referee. Karen Eble and her crew in pairings did a great job as they usually do. Kathy Kubec worked extremely hard in running the concessions and driving the truck to haul mats (she's a bus driver so she got drafted to drive the big truck). Joe Kubec did staging and kept the mats running as fast and as full as they could with a total of 14 mat surfaces going. Tom Shaw worked the stand with USA Wrestling clothing for people to buy and collecting the money for Friday night registrations. We had several of our high school wrestlers work most of the day officiating and I would like to point out Jared Mirsky who I saw ref all day, right up to the last 5-6 matches of the day when it starts to get "ugly". Thanks Jared, you hung in there officiating longer than I did! Coach Ron jumped into the action and officiated whenever a mat was open. No one questions his calls!! A great help were Kyle Griffith and Mark Chelsen who provided emergency medical for injured wrestlers. Both Kyle and Mark are fire department EMT's and unfortunately they were busy with a couple of shoulder injuries that required transport to ER. To P.G. and Tim, the injured wrestlers, and their parents, we all hope you have a rapid recovery. My son broke his collarbone two years ago wrestling so we know what you're going through and we feel for you.

I only named a few people that headed certain areas and didn't mean to leave anyone out. There were a ton of people helping, both in and out of the club, so I can't mention everyone but we do want to let all those that worked know that their efforts were appreciated by the USA Everett Club and everyone that competed in the tournament. Without the volunteers, there is no tournament. Lets plan on an even bigger and better tournament next year. The results will be posted on the web later today (after someone else in the house wakes up to read them to me!!)

Editors note: I had a discussion with a ref during one of my sons matches last weekend and it was noted nicely to me later that it was ironic, after my article on "being nice" to the refs, that I was the one who halted a match for a long time contesting a call. I thought I would comment on that here. I did this but I didn't yell or scream at the ref. I simply asked him his definition of "out of bounds" and he was wrong. I asked for the head ref and he came over and overturned the call. The first ref and I "saw the same thing" but he didn't call it right because he wasn't clear on the head out of bounds rule. This was not a "judgement call". I felt he was technically wrong and thankfully the call was overturned by the head official upon review. Even with the reversal of the call the table still had the wrong points on the board but there was nothing I could do about that since they don't review video tape (the tape shows the score was wrong) so I sat down and shut up. Two matches later the same ref made two calls against us which I disagreed with but I didn't say anything because they were "judgement calls" and you can't argue "judgement", his or mine. Bottom line is, if it's a "judgement call" try and "let it go". If the ref is "technically wrong" then approach the table and "discuss" it nicely with the ref (It doesn't hurt to have a rule book with you to prove your point). If that doesn't work, and you are "really sure" that you're correct, then call for the head official for his final ruling.

USA Everett Wrestling Team had wrestlers compete in both the Bellingham Freestyle Classic in Bellingham, WA and the Adna Attack Tournament in Chehalis, WA on the weekend of March 11, 2000. At the Bellingham tournament the team had a total of 13 wrestlers place first in their age-weight group and seven more were close with a second place finish. USA Everett had teammates face off in the finals in 4 different groups in a large tournament that attracted almost 500 wrestlers. We may have had several other placers in the Cadet and Junior divisions but nobody reported those to me and bracket sheets were not current at the end.

As a side note, I hope parents will continue going easy on the refs. Volunteering this year as a ref full time has given me more perspective on how hard it can be. It always SEEMS so easy to call a match when you're a coach and you "see what you want to see" (I've been there). It's not so "clear" when you are in the middle of a match with close calls coming fast and furious. I thought I would only want to ref "little guys" but found the parents are much more "intense" with the little guys than they are with the Schoolboys on up through Juniors (I was probably that way too). Actually I have found that with the big guys the moves are much more decisive and easier to score, and the parents are calmer. With the little guys, they roll all over scoring points right and left, all the while with parents screaming (been there, done that). We have several new refs this year and I hope that parents and coaches realize that it is like wrestling, you have to do it over and over through repetition until it becomes instinctive. In the early phase the refs have to think about the calls, like a really fast 3 and 2, or the 2 and 2, etc. Sometimes they come 4 moves in about 2 seconds. As they get more practice the difficult calls will become more automatic, just like our wrestlers develop the ability to quickly see and feel what is going on around them through repetition. Remember, what you see from the sidelines is altered by the fact that you want your wrestler to win. I have seen my son lose state and regional titles on "close/bad" calls. I have many times reviewed on tape what I thought was a "bad" call on my son only to see the next day that it wasn't really a bad call but was instead a very close call that could have gone either way, unfortunately it did not go our way, and in the heat of battle, "it must be bad". I have also seen truly bad calls, but that is part of sports and is something we all learn to live with. Remember, without the officials, we can't have matches so keep your cool and just "roll your eyes" the next time a call goes the other way.

Medal winners are listed by age group.

Many teams have contacted me wanting to know what USA Everett is doing for the Reno World of Wrestling tournament. We took a vote on Thursday and we are registering as part of the Vision Quest team being put together by Brad Swartz. We like the idea of Washington uniting on an out of state venture. We would go as Team Washington if it was a USAW event but it's not so will go Vision Quest and recommend other clubs to join us in doing this. In this state we compete against each other but when we leave the state, we should unite and have a good time as teammates. You can contact Brad at 253-377-2741.

The Turnout times have been changed for some of the guys starting the week of 3/5/00. Because of the large turnout for high school age wrestlers on Tuesday and Thursday, Coach Ron has decided to have the advanced, young kids that usually turn out with the HS age kids (Tue and Thur at 6:30) come to practice on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 instead of those days. This is so he has enough time to spend working with each kid. If the high school age turnout thins out later in the season he will combine them but this is the schedule until he tells us different. High School age and younger kids will stay at their normal times.

If there are any results to report from the Shelton tournament for USA Everett, email me the information by Sunday evening as I will be sending my report to the newspapers Monday am. I didn't get a chance to see how the high school age kids did although Graham Morin was romping as usual when I saw him and I assume he won. Cole VanLeuven was wrestling well but landed head first on the mat and had to quit for the day.

The USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the PNW Freestyle Classic in Silverdale,WA on 03/04/2000. Highlights of the tournament were USA Everett taking the top four spots at Midget 60 and the first four weights in the Schoolboy division (70-85). George King was named the Outstanding Wrestler in the Midget division for the second week in a row after also winning the honor at the USA Everett Freestyle Classic on February 26, 2000. King has really come on strong this year and is starting to dominate his weight group. All three of the Kubecs took first place along with Decker and Gilbertson. Gilbertson beat Tyler Bowles in the finals at 75 lb Schoolboy in their first match against each other in three years as they are usually in different weight divisions. Gilbertson and Bowles each have three state freestyle championships. In an all USA Everett finals Ross Lampers defeated teammate Michael Lomsdalen in the 80 lb Schoolboy title match and Derek Garcia defeated Sam Ottow for the 60 lb Midget title.

Medal winners are listed by age group.
