| 2000-01 Folkstyle News 9/1-2/17 I post the results from the tournaments that I attend and record OR other information that is EMAILED to me about USA Everett Wrestlers. USA Everett Wrestling Team Press Release Page Contact Dave Gilbertson for additional info 425 338-0266 (preferred) or Office 425 745-4430 (if urgent) 2/24/01 - USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at it's own USA Everett Freestyle Classic held at Everett High School in Everett, WA on 02/24/2001. USA Everett had 33 of it's members win medals by placing in the top three of their respective age-weight groups. Team scores were kept with each team being allowed to choose 10 of their wrestlers as their "scoring" team. Everett took first in the 10-man team scoring with a total of 197 points. The SteelClaw club from Sedro Woolley, WA took second with 131 points and Bellingham took third with 107 points. Fourth place went to the Southwest Washington Wrestling Club with 99 pts and the top placing "out of state" team was the Renegade Wrestling Club of Oregon who finished in 5th place overall with 75 pts. Three Everett wrestlers also received the Outstanding Wrestler award for the age group by scoring the highest number of technical points in their division. The OW award winners for Everett were Kai Bruno, Tory Kowalczyk and Joe Kubec. Complete USA Everett Classic Results Everett medal winners are listed by age group. Lake Stevens did a great job in defending the 3A title that they won in 2000. Sedro Woolley (2nd), Anacortes (5th) and Stanwood (9th) also performed well and place in the top 10. The only WESCO 4A team to place in the top ten was Oak Harbor which finished in 9th place. One of the highlights of attending the meet was getting the opportunity to watch Martin Mitchell win his 4th straight championship becoming only the second wrestler to accomplish that feat in Washington state history. I had never had the chance to watch Martin wrestle before so I was glad I was there. I saw his dad just before the match and wished him well. He looked more nervous than his son and I read an article today in which he said-- "It's a real nervous time," said Tonasket coach Dave Mitchell, who was named the Class 2A coach of the year. "He's holding up better than I am." -- I think he was right but I'm sure he is very relieved and proud today. Scott Jones (Lakeside Coach) stood next to me during the match and gave me some more background on the Mitchell's activities (father and son). That's the great thing about being involved with kids wrestling, you get to meet some very dedicated people that you would never meet if not for having your kids in this sport. Burke Barnes of Lake Stevens did his usual damage and pinned all his opponents on the way to the title. One wrestler who really stood out as well was David Courchaine of Cheney. Roan Dryer of Sedro Woolley pinned all of his opponents on the way to the final but this Courchaine is one stud and he just shut him down on the way to his second title. He talked in the newspaper article that he wished he could cut down to 125 to wrestle Barnes. I would love to see those two go at it if they were the same size, but they're not. Izzy Silva (USA Everett and Marysville) lost in overtime in the finals at 275. It was the first loss in 2 years for Izzy but he was gracious in defeat. Several other USA Everett members had some tough losses such as Cecelio Martinez, Josh Decker, etc. in which they were right there at the end when the match could go either way but were beat by a great shot or counter. It is especially tough to take the loss as a senior but I'm sure they will carry on, there is no other choice! Individual results of USA Everett wrestlers are listed below. AAA State Championships at Tacoma, WA AAAA State Championships at Tacoma, WA 2/17/01 - The Washington state meet concluded its first day and will start again today at 11:00 with the semi-final matches. The results are updated regularly at the WIAA Mat Classic Website. Cascade High School, after winning the 4A Regional I title, had a tough time at the state meet with all of their wrestlers going out in the first day. The Region I 3A teams however are doing very well and after the first day hold 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in the team standings. The 3A semi-finals are loaded with local kids and should be great to watch. A note to parents of future high school wrestlers, get your kids involved in a freestyle wrestling program if you want them to contend for state medals. If all the kids that plan on wrestling for Cascade over the next 6 years would start off-season training with USA Everett RIGHT NOW we can make a run at the state title in 2-3 years. Look at Anacortes (mostly USA Everett kids), Lake Stevens and Sedro Woolley. They all have a good number of their kids training in freestyle during the off-season and that is that is a big part of their success. They work hard and that's what it takes to place at state, you have to work harder and longer than your competition. USA Everett Wrestling will start freestyle practice next week at Cascade High School in Everett. ALL wrestlers are invited to come to the initial practices although the coach may have to limit the numbers after the first few weeks if we have too many. I strongly recommend to Everett area wrestlers to attend this spring and hone your skill with some of the best wrestlers in the Northwest and the Nation. I have selfish reasons for trying to get more Everett area wrestlers on our team. I want Cascade to contend for a state title in 2-3 years and I know they can with the upcoming talent that will be there, IF enough other kids from Cascade (and our Junior Highs) jump on board. There is an initiation fee of $25.00 to join the team and you must have (or buy) a USA Wrestling card which is $25.00. Next practice in 6:00 pm in Cascade wrestling room on Monday. Let's start working for that title NOW! 2/17/01 - A number of Washington state wrestlers are competing at the National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Championships in Rochester, Mn this weekend. Andy Olson, USA Everett alumni, is in the semi-finals at 174lbs. Check out this link for complete results. 2/15/01 - Newspaper article on Coach Ron's visit back to the Everett area - Link to the Herald 2/12/01 - A large number of USA Everett's high school wrestlers performed very well at Regional competition leading up to the state tournament. I'm proud to say that the Cascade High School team (the school that is presently hosting our practice) took first place in the Region I AAAA tournament. I believe they qualified 8 wrestlers to state including Tony Kubec who the paper said was the ONLY freshman to make it to state from Region I AAAA! If you train hard you can hit the ground running even as a freshman. Isreal Silva also repeated as heavyweight champion and had a great article in the Herald on 2/13/01. Cecilio Martinez won and had his picture in the Herald. Chad Douglas also had a large picture in the paper. Lisa Ward from Woodinville High School is also a member of our team and finished in 5th place at the 103 pound division. She is an alternate for state and if something happens so that she gets to compete in the State Championships she would probably be the first girl. AAAA Region I Championships at East Lake, WA Tony Kubec, Everett, 2nd at 119 lbs, Rory Douglas, Everett, 4th at 135 lbs, Cecilio Martinez, Everett, 1st at 160 lbs, Israel Silva, Marysville, 1st at 275 lbs USA Everett Wrestling Team also had a lot of members at the AAA Region I Championships in Anacortes, WA on 02/10/2001. The Anacortes team is loaded with USA Everett kids and they pushed Lake Stevens down the stretch but came up a little short in the finals to the powerful Viking squad of Brent Barnes. The Everett placers are as follows: William Ward, Monroe, 4th at 130 lbs, Kye Kirkpatrick, Anacortes, 2nd at 130 lbs, Jonathan Decker, Anacortes, 2nd at 140 lbs, Matt Cooper, Anacortes, 1st at 145 lbs, Cole VanLeuven, Mukilteo, 3rd at 152 lbs, Jared Mirsky, Monroe, 4th at 135 lbs, Josh Decker, Anacortes, 1st at 171 lbs, Brian Jones, Everett, 2nd at 275 lbs 02/11/01 - USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the NW Collegiate Championships Ross Lampers and Gabrial Griffith battled through tough groups at 90 and 95 lbs but came up just a little bit short in the semifinals where they both dropped close matches. They went on to wrestle in the 3rd-4th place finals were Lampers took 4th and Griffith took 3rd. This tournament concludes the folkstyle wrestling season for this year but now the club will gear up for the freestyle season which starts with the USA Everett Freestyle Classic Tournament at Everett High School on Saturday, February 24th. Medal winners from the NW Championships are listed by age group.
Bantam: Joshua Villani, Everett, age 7, 1st at 60 lbs. Complete bracket results from the NW Championships 2/9/01 - Lake Stevens High School was ranked 16th in the nation in the February 7th Themat.com coaches poll. 2/4/01 - USA Everett had a number of wrestlers compete for their respective high schools at the NW AAA championships this weekend. The results (with USA Everett wrestlers in red) are as follows: 24 Class 3A wrestlers advance Ferndale advanced eight wrestlers and two alternates and won three NWL titles: Juan Mungarro (119), Brett Chambers (112) and Corbett Stevens (189).
Lynden's Randy Cuellar won the 103 title and three other Lions advanced. Two Lynden wrestlers won alternate bids. Belligham won two berths. The Red 2/4/01 - USA Everett had a number of wrestlers compete for their respective high schools at the WESCO AAA championships this weekend. The results (with USA Everett wrestlers in red) are as follows: Championship bouts Link to Everett Herald Article 2/3/01 - WESCO AAAA Wrestling championships finished tonight and USA Everettt had several representatives do well. At 119 was an all USA Everett final as freshman Tony Kubec of Cascade defeated his sophomore teammate Nate Lerma by a score of 13-2. Tony pinned his other three matches in the tournament and Nate pinned two out of his three. At 135 sophomore Rory Douglas took 4th and his brother Chad took 2nd at 140. Another freshman named Larson turned out with USA Everett last spring and placed 4th for Cascade at 140. Jesse Calderon of Cascade also had a few practices with USA Everett last spring and finished 2nd to Isreal Silva, the defending state champion (and another USA Everett alumni). Also from the team was Cecelio Martinez who wrestled for Mariner High and took first at 160 (I think that's his weight). I hope I didn't miss anyone else. The overall team champion for the District was Cascade High School. Link to Everett Herald Article At Cascade H.S. January 30, 2001 - Lisa Ward of USA Everett competed at the MISSOURI VALLEY
WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL OPEN and placed 4th. It was held at Marshall, Mo.,
Jan. 27, 2001. January 28, 2001 - The Kids State Championships are now history and the Everett team would like to thank everyone that participated, attended and/or volunteered. The tournament set a new attendance record for a kids state meet in Washington with over 680 entries from age 5 through eighth grade Cadet. A special thanks goes to Jeret Garcia for taking the responsibility of being the tournament director. It is amazing the number of details he can process simultaneously and not explode! He was absolutely everywhere directing "traffic" to keep thing moving along. Thank you to all the USA Everett parents and kids that worked (you know who you are) from Friday night (we had to set up the meet AFTER a Friday night High School basketball game) through late Saturday cleanup. Thanks to Eric Mulsberry, the Everett High School Coach, and his group of wrestlers and parents for partnering on this tournament, hauling mats, concessions, securing use of the facility, etc. To the Snohomish County High School referees that came and worked, you were very much appreciated. These people volunteered their time for a very small amount of money because they care about developing kids wrestling and advancing it. Thank you to the parents and coaches that volunteered to officiate, especially later in the day when some of the Black and Whites had to leave. That is a tough job that nobody seems to want to do but it has to be done. In our state we really need to get more adults involved with this. By the end of the day we had to pull myself and our coach off of other tournament duties to officiate to keep the mats running full blast. Keith Kubec officiated all day. We were asking for volunteers but were having trouble getting them. To Craig Onufer, Al Roshau, Scott Dodd, Jake Jarvis thanks for stepping up and volunteering to officiate when we needed help. To other parents and coaches who did officiate, thank you. Parents, you need to look at this and realize that the sport depends on officials to operate and we need people to step up. Buy a rules book and read it several times and then go out and give it a go. It's not that bad! To the people in pairing, you did a fantastic job especially given the volume of work to be done. Thanks to the NW Washington Club, Sedro-Wooley, Everett, Bethel and Edmonds-Rhinos (and anyone I missed) for supplying the people to do the pairing. Karen Eble the state pairings director was there to run the operation and did a great job. Some of the "kinks" that were run into will be discussed at the spring association meeting so that next years host can maybe have a little more time to set up the brackets. A major complaint at tournament is the wrestling starting at 10:30 or 11:30 instead of the scheduled 10:00. To meet that deadline the brackets were a blind draw without separation of teammates. Many weight groups worked out fine but some had teammates meeting earlier than we would have wanted in an ideal situation. Next year they may need to have more time between the end of registration and the start of wrestling or go to open bracketing instead of line bracketing to achieve better separation. Last but not least is a thank you to all the teams that supplied the table help. Mary Douglas organized the Yellow Jackets from Burlington, Mike Meeks ran Orting, Jennifer Herman ran the Sedro-Wooley table (we can ALWAYS count on Steelclaw), Todd Hall and SW Washington, Bullards and NW Washington, Mike Garcia and Yak-Attack, Damon Matz and Marysville, The Haas family and Eastside, Onufers and Lakewood, Scoot Dodd and Blaine, Terry Ray and the Edmonds Rhinos, Jalene King and Auburn, Kevin Brearley and Sons of Thunder from Bellingham, and last but not least in Mike Sweet and the Bethel club. There were many individuals that filled in on tables and unfortunately I can't list everyone but thank you all so much. These people and clubs took complete responsibility for their tables. I kept some Everett parents in reserve to fill in spots at the tables as people bailed later in the day but IT NEVER HAPPENED!! Those teams "held their post" through out the day and I don't remember calling for table help even once (I remember calling for officials a lot later in the day)! You guys were all tremendous. All in all the comments that I have received on the tournament have been very positive. You wanted a tournament with BIG numbers and you got it. You wanted stiff competition and you got it. There were a couple of situations that came up that were not ideal but that happens in all tournaments. I know those situations were very big to the individuals involved and emotions run high in the heat of battle (I know, I've been there!) We don't always get the draw we want (been there) or the call we want (been there too) but life goes on. There are always many opinions on the best way to do something and decisions were made on what we felt was the most good for the most people. I remember Spock saying in a Star Trek movie when he was making a personal sacrifice that "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one". The state folkstyle tournament has grown each of the past 3 years that it has been held and I hope it will continue to grow. I hope that whoever host it next year will be able to count on the same outpouring of help that we received. Remember that in two weeks the NW Championships will be held in Portland and then on January 24, 2001 USA Everett will host the Everett Freestyle Classic at the same location as the state meet. Both of these tournaments are open to all wrestlers, not just in state. I hope we can count on your help again and we can "rock this place". January 29, 2001 - USA Everett Wrestling Team scored big at the Washington State
Kids Folkstyle
Championships in Everett, WA on January 27, 2001 by having 26 of their members
place in the top six of the various age and weight groups. The tournament
had wrestlers from all over the state and with over 680 contestants it set a new
attendance record. The tournament was open to wrestlers from age 5
through eighth grade. Winning state championships from Everett were Joshua Villani,
Everett; Derek Garcia, Anacortes;
Jimmy Lindenstein, Lynnwood; Zack Zweifel, Mount Vernon; Kelly Kubec, Everett;
Jonny Gilbertson, Everett, and Nathan Decker, Anacortes. Garcia, Zweifel,
Gilbertson and Nathan were all repeating as champions. January 21, 2001 - USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the 46th annual Tulsa Nationals in Tulsa, Ok from January 18-20, 2000. This is billed as the "Toughest Kids Tournament in the World" and does live up to it's billing .There were 41 states represented and over 2200 wrestlers ages five through 14. A group of eight wrestlers from the team made the trip with four of them placing in the top six at the tournament. Derek Garcia, Anacortes, had the highest finish on the team in the 8 & Under group with at 2nd place finish at 67 pounds. Derek was winning the championships match by a score of 7-0 when he made an error which allowed him opponent to pin him for the title. Zack Zweifel, Mount Vernon, finished with a third place trophy in the 10 & Under 55 pound division which was an improvement of one position on his 2000 placing at this tournament. Kenny Kubec of Everett made it to the semi-finals before running into some very tough competition and ended up in sixth place. Jonny Gilbertson also made it to the semi-finals where he lost to the tournament runner-up and eventually ended up in 4th place. In the match just prior to the 3rd and 4th wrestle off Jonny was down 0-3 with about 10 seconds left when he got an arm switch and scored two points then went out of bounds. With 6 seconds left in the match he was on top with not enough time to really score anything. With two seconds left he got a tremendous break when his opponent grabbed two of his fingers and bent them backwards which caused the ref to call a technical violation (and one point) to put the match into overtime. Jonny scored a takedown in the overtime to win the match and advance to the 3-4 place bout. Also competing for Everett were Ross Lampers, Michael Lomsdalen, Nathan
Decker and Justin Davidson. Lampers and Lomsdalen each one 2 matches in
the tournament before being eliminated. Decker and Davidson both won
several matches and came within 1 win of making it into the medal rounds. Next
competition will be January 27, 2001 when USA Everett hosts the 2001 Washington
State Kids Folkstyle tournament at Everett High School. Medal winners are listed by age group. The Battle Ground/Southwest Washington/Pitt group sent seven wrestlers to the tournament with similar results. Trevor Hall took 2nd at 12 & Under 73 after a tremendous disappointment in the quarter finals. Trevor was up 9-0 at the time and made a mistake from the bottom. He ended up in a headlock and got pinned. He came back through the consolation bracket and took second. He got a rematch with the kid in the consolation bracket and finished him off the second time. Eric Starks also had some trouble and lost in the finals by a close score. In the challenge match for 2nd he lost at the last second on a somewhat controversial call. Jacob Farmer also finished in 3rd and Brandon Sitch was 2nd. Spokane had two wrestlers there but I don't know if they made it into the medal rounds. A number of Oregon kids placed including Bryson Gutches and RJ Pena. RJ was 4th at 10 and under 67. There were so many matches going on that I couldn't keep track of who all won or placed for clubs other than our own. There were a number of other Oregon wrestlers that did well and those results will be at the World of Wrestling site in the near future. January 13, 2001 - The USA Everett Wrestling team sent a total of 15 boys to the Oregon Classic in Portland, OR on January 13, 2001. The Oregon Classic is the top tournament in the northwest for kids collegiate style wrestling and attracted contestants from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada and Montana. Five of the Everett team members made it into the Championship finals led by George King and Nathan Decker who each won a Championship. For George King it was his first Oregon Classic championship while for Decker it was his second to go along with the title he won in 1999. Jonny Gilbertson was attempting to win his 3rd Classic title in a row but lost his finals match against another 2X champion named Colton Gow by a score of 2-1. Gilbertson and Gow have a total of 10 appearances in the championship finals between them but had never met each other in the finals. Kenny Kubec took second at his weight which matches his 2000 finish. Zach Zweifel lost a tough match in the finals by a score of 3-2 to finish second. In the 2000 Classic he finished with a title. Derek Garcia, another former champion at the Classic took 3rd place in his division to wrap up the Everett scoring. Seven wrestlers from the team will be attending the 46th annual Tulsa Nationals in Tulsa, Ok from January 18-20, 2000. This is billed as the toughest kids tournament in the world. The team going to Tulsa is comprised of Derek Garcia, Zach Zweifel, Kenny Kubec, Jonny Gilbertson, Ross Lampers, Michael Lomsdalen, Nathan Decker and Justin Davidson. I didn't see how Justin Davidson finished and they didn't contact me so I couldn't put his true results in the newspaper release but I think he finished 2nd. I saw him lose to Barry Johnson of Oregon (2X Tulsa Nationals Champ) and assume he won the remainder of his matches. Last week in Newberg he beat Barry 1-0 but this time Barry got the upper hand and won 12-6. Amberly Montgomery of the Eastside Wrestling Team took first place in the schoolboy 105 pound division. In reviewing the past 14 years of champions in the Classic we could only find one other girl champion and that was in a younger group. She is the first girl to win a Schoolboy title that we know of at the Classic. If someone knows of any other champions besides Montgomery or Lang, email me and let me know. Ages, weights and city of wrestlers placing at the Oregon Classic are as
follows: January 7, 2001 - USA Everett Wrestling team turned out in force at the
qualifying tournament for the Justin Davidson won a very competitive 112 pound weight group in the Cadet division. Justin beat one of the toughest Cadets in the country by a score of 1-0 to win the title. Zach Zweifel and George King dominated their divisions with first place finishes in the Novice age group while Brandon Davidson was first at 50 lbs in the PeeWee group. After the Oregon Classic Finals next week the team will be sending 8 members to compete at the 46th Annual Tulsa Nationals, touted as the "Toughest Tournament in the World" for kids. The next week USA Everett will be hosting the Washington State Kids Folkstyle Championships at Everett High School on January 27, 2001. Complete results from the Oregon Classic Qualifier are as follows: USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Everett High School Classic January 1, 2001 - USA Everett Wrestling Team sent a 10 man team to compete at the New Year Team Tournament in Woodburn, OR on 12/30/2000. There were a total of 26 teams competing in the team competition. USA Everett had 5 of the 10 wrestlers take first place in their division and 4 others finished in the top 3. USA Cobra from Portland, OR took first place with a total of 37 points. USA Everett placed second with 31 points while the Wis-Kids Club from Stevenson, WA went home with 23 points and a third place award. Ross Lampers led the charge by pinning his opponents in all four of his bouts within the first minute and a half of the match. Zach Zweifel wrestling up one weight class won 5 matches to take the 65 lb group. Medal winners are listed by age group.

I was told that a group from Cascade High School was also there and took 1st place in the High School Team scoring. December 10, 2000 - USA Everett Wrestling Team sent a small group of six
wrestlers to compete at the NW Team Championships in The Dalles, OR on
December 9, 2000. The team put 4 of the 6 members attending into the
finals but all came up short on this day. Medal winners are listed by age group. November 28, 2000 - Otto Olson (Everett), the #1 ranked 174 lb in NCAA Div I was hit by a car while riding his bike at the University of Michigan. He dislocated his shoulder and will be out 3-4 weeks. Last year he missed the NCAA Championships due to a knee injury. Article Link November 26, 2000 - This past weekend was a tough one for the USA Everett family. Graham Morin, a USA Everett Alumni wrestling for Cornell University died of a cardiac abnormality. I heard about this on Sunday but couldn't bring myself to write about it on our web site until now. He was a great wrestler as well as a very nice and humble young man. Tim Ottow and I were talking about him on Monday. Tim reminisced that at many of the kids tournaments we worked Graham would referee all day long without hardly a break. Not many high school kids will do that but that was just the way he was. He was one of the great ones who also gave back to his sport. He will be missed by all the people associated with USA Everett and wrestling in general. Two links below have more details and the Bellingham article has the address for a memorial fund set up in his memory. His parents Phred and Laurie are in our thoughts. Bellingham Herald Article on Graham Intermat Article on Graham Morin's passing November 26, 2000 - USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Pacific Coast Championships October 27, 2000 - I received the following email from a student at University of Washington which sounded interesting so I am posting the information.
I am a junior at the University of Washington
where, unfortunately, there are no opportunities to wrestle. Until now.
Myself and several other wrestlers have started a club wrestling team with the
ultimate goal being to reinstate a Division I team here.
The purpose for this e-mail is two-fold.
First of all, you may be interested in adding a link to our webpage on your
site. The URL is: http://students.washington.edu/wcw
Secondly, we are looking very hard for a coach.
We expect to have a strong membership of dedicated wrestlers, and already we
