FINAL 2002 High School Rankings and

Wrestlers of the Year

By The Predictor

Kurt Lang

Another fantastic season is in the books, and as Freestyle wrestling cranks up, I am (at last) releasing my Final 2002 Ranking.  The list is broad, with 193 different schools mentioned, and about five hundred wrestlers.  They come from every corner of the state, from every classification, and any grade in school.  These are the best of the best, and to top things off, more than half of them will come back next year to compete.

This year’s final ranking definitely demonstrates how some wrestling power has shifted to the 4A classification, with half of the number-one ranked grapplers.  2A follows with four; AB and 3A have two and one, respectively.

I ran a report based upon the individual rankings to evaluate which programs have the most strength (though they don’t necessarily reflect what would happen in an all-out tournament).  The top three programs, not surprisingly, are the Championship teams of Connell, Sedro-Woolley, and Moses Lake, in that order.  What I was surprised by, though, was that Zillah came out Tenth, with Warden landing 36th  (what!?).  White River has the most wrestlers mentioned overall on the list (twelve), and the top-three teams have the most ranked wrestlers, each with seven.

A special mention has to go to mighty Republic, which is the highest-placing B class school on my list, or in any past State Tournament that I know of.  With an enrollment of about 140, they were real giant-killers (consider that I saw team rosters for some schools with seventy or so kids, or basically as many boys as there are in Republic’s High School.)  Nice job, Tigers.

Using a system allocating twenty points for a number-one ranking, down through one point for a number-twenty ranking, and awarding 0.3 points for each Honorable Mention, here’s how the top-twenty teams came out:

Connell  (2A)

102.3

Sedro-Woolley  (3A)

95.6

Moses Lake  (4A)

80

White River  (3A)

70.1

Heritage  (4A)

62.5

Zillah (1A)

59.6

East Valley (Spokane) (4A)

56.6

Spanaway Lake (4A)

56

Wapato (3A)

55.3

Central Kitsap (4A)

52.3

Mount Baker (2A)

51.2

Aberdeen (3A)

50.6

Ridgefield (2A)

48.6

Tahoma (4A)

48.6

Gonzaga Prep (4A)

47.3

Republic (B)

46.3

Now, as far as individuals go, I have some nominations for Wrestler of the Year.  They’re based upon what happened in Tacoma, as well as during the season.  Here goes…

The Predictor’s AB Wrestler of the Year

Earning his second State Championship was big enough, but a second Tri-State title didn’t hurt.  One of a wrestling family dynasty over the years in Toppenish and now Granger, and half of a set of brothers to stand on top of the podium in Tacoma, Granger’s Richie Zuniga is my AB Wrestler of the Year.  Zuniga scored more points, by nearly double, in my rating system than the second-ranked AB wrestler, who happened to be his finals opponent, Ben Sevigny (Zillah).  Zuniga won that highly-anticipated match with a decision 13-6.  He got to the finals with a R1 pin in the opener, teching the fourth-place finisher (Russ Fenstermaker, Winlock) in the quarters, and a R1 pin in the semis (Sixth-placer Ethan Copple, Okanogan).  I don’t know if or where Zuniga plans to wrestle in college, but if he does, he’s got the juice to do some damage.

The Predictor’s 2A Wrestler of the Year

This was a little harder pick—lots of names crowd the top of the list in 2A, with five undefeated wrestlers, and a couple of others having lots of merit.  I have a soft spot in my heart for the big guys, and I guess that helps me pick—but the ratings in my database also have Jamie Rakevich ranked higher than any other 2A wrestler.  After a fifth-place finish in the Reno Tourenmaent of Champions last season, and a Western Regional Championship in freestyle, I expected Jamie to rip the state apart.  Unfortunately, Rakevich spent much of the season nursing a bum leg he got playing football.  But when he came back, oh brother, did he come back.  He lists a 25-0 record for 2002, including three pins at state.  He told me that he hadn’t picked a college yet, but will make visits to Boise State, Oregon State, and Cornell to help himself decide.  With his good GPA (3.9), he’ll make a great recruit.

The Predictor’s 3A Wrestler of the Year

Though I’ve been a fan of wrestling for twenty-five years, I first started putting together my database only about four years ago.  One of the earliest names I entered was Anthony Haukenberry of White River.  He took sixth as a freshman, losing to another one of my early entries, Jonathan Decker of Anacortes.  After a no-place trip to Tacoma in 2000, Haukenberry opened up the throttle.  He fell just short of a double-state championship in Freestyle and Greco-Roman (second in Freestyle), but won the 135-pound high school championship in Tacoma.  His only tournament trip-up during the regular season was at the Pacific Coast Championships, where he suffered a semifinal loss to the Oregon State Champion, Kyle Larson.  After that, Huakenberry picked up steam and rolled through a very tough bracket with little resistance—Pin, Pin, Tech, Major.  I spoke with one of his coaches, but didn’t get much information on his college plans.  I hope he decides to make the move up to the next level.

The Predictor’s 4A Wrestler of the Year

It’s hard to build up suspense on this one.  Who might be the best 4A wrestler in the state of Washington? Hmm, let’s see. Oh yeah, Burke Barnes. Not only the best wrestler this year, and last, but probably one of the best to ever wrestle in the state.  He did just what he said he’d do, blazing through the bracket Pin, Major, Pin, Pin.  He took out a very good undefeated wrestler in the finals (Mickey Elliott, Spanaway Lake) and made it look like turnout.  Last summer, he went to the FILA Junior Nationals, to try and qualify for the National Team.  Wrestling against college veterans, this (then) high school junior was able to get sixth place.  Incredible, and who knows, this may be the year he gets to the finals.  If he chooses to make the trip to High School Senior Nationals in April, he has a very good shot at yet another title.

Now I know Burke had his critics, but when you consider the pressure he faced from reporters, the attention from his peers, the expectations of his community (not to mention the nasty e-mails, messages, letters, and phone calls), I believe he acted pretty danged responsibly.  He has a lot more class than many people would have you believe and I salute him.

And a word about Dignity

A story that kind of tugged at my heart this season came out of Southwest Washington.  Jordan Bradbury made his fourth-straight trip to the finals this season, and for the fourth time came away with silver.  I never spoke with Bradbury personally, but I was watching, and I have to say he seems to handle the situation with grace and dignity.  We spend a lot of time worrying about very narrow goals in this sport—and for some people a championship is the only proof of quality.  But the quality that a four-time finalist brings to our sport cannot be questioned—Nice job, Jordan.

This has sure gotten long---I’ll cut to the rankings.  If you have suggestions, or disagreement, or just want to chat, drop me a line a wapredictor@hotmail.com.  For all those who wrote in the last couple of weeks in the season (there were lots of you), thank you, and I once again apologize for not responding—I was swamped with stuff to do, both in wrestling and out of it.  I am now able to keep up, so stay in touch!

Finally, a word about Freestyle.  Please check your calendars and attend a couple of tournaments. The kids are fun to watch, and the action is everywhere.  But mostly, the clubs need your help—usually.  If you can volunteer to work at a table, or anything else, do it.  You’ll get the best seat in the house, and you be helping the “Oldest and Greatest Sport”.  Thanks.
