PREP WRESTLING Selah's Morgan Captures Another Title
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
CHENEY Selah's Zach Morgan captured his fourth straight sub-regional title and
Wapato's Rogelio Diaz was a repeat winner in Saturday's Class 3A wrestling
tournament at Cheney High School.
The top four placers qualified for the 3A Region IV tournament at Selah next
Saturday.
Morgan dispatched Prosser's Manuel Plata 9-5 in the 119-pound final to complete
his four-year sweep. Morgan's teammate Jairo Torres followed up with a title at
125 pounds.
Diaz won his second straight 103 title, besting Clarkston's Jason Fairley 12-4.
Sunnyside finished third with 1831/2 points and two champions Eli Zuniga (130)
and Gabe Lara (189).
Prosser also had a pair of champions in Leonardo Flores (140) and Brian Bishop
(215). Grandview picked up a championship with Ismael Fajardo at 112.
Third-ranked Clarkston did not win an individual title but it ran off with the
team title, scoring 2791/2 points.

Mount Baker dominates 2A district
Squalicum second at 3A district tournament

SULTAN - Top-ranked Mount Baker had six champions Saturday as it won its eighth
consecutive district wrestling title at Sultan High School. The Mountaineers
finished with 394 points to 247.5 for second-place Lakewood.
Winning titles for Baker were Dustin Chellson (119), Anthony Zender (135), Craig
Jackson (140), B.J. Vavra (152), C.J. Warren (171) and Charlie Brown (275).
Mount Baker advanced 17 to next weekend's regionals at Mountlake Terrace,
including second-placers Trent Baisden (135), Victor Harkness (103), Tyler
Marshall (112), Colt Warren (125), Allan Grimes (160) and J.C. George (189).
Taking thirds for Baker were Josh Little (145) and Jake Horsmon (140), and Tim
Myers was a nice surprise at 125, placing fourth.
"Overall, I'm pleased," Baker coach Ron Lepper said. "I wish we'd have won a few
more finals. There were some close ones, but I'm happy about getting 17 through
to next week."
The unbeaten Zender was named NCC Wrestler of the Year and Lepper was Coach of
the Year.
The top four in each weight class advanced. Meridian moved six to regionals and
Blaine and Nooksack Valley had four qualifiers each.
Meridian's Steven Auld was second at 215, and the Trojans' Tommy Huizenga (119)
placed third. Blaine's Anthony Terris was second at 275 and teammates Richie
Tewes (130) and Khishigdorj Bayartsengel (152) placed third. Nooksack's Andrew
Larson (160) and Ron Lockhart (171) also got thirds.

STORM SECOND AT CLASS 3A DISTRICT TOURNAMENT: Favored Sedro-Woolley won the
district wrestling title Saturday night, with Squalicum finishing seocnd.
Squalicum had two champions, Brett O'Brien at 130 and Nick Webb at 140.
O'Brien decisioned Amadeo Lopez of Lynden 12-0. Webb beat Coby Jones of
Burlington on a decision.
In other highlights:
Ferndale's Chet Slevin pinned Nick Vlahos of Bellingham to win the 189 title;
Jason Costello of Squalicum lost to Nathan Decker of Sedro 2-0 in the 103 final.
Juan Ortiz of Burlington won at 112, beating Mikey Woodruff of Bellingham in
overtime, and at 135, Mason Webb of Squalicum lost to Jacob Evans of Sedro 4-2.
At 145, Bellingham's Levi Brearley lost to Jordan Janicki of Sedro-Woolley on a
decision. Squalicum advanced eight to next weekend's regionals at Bellingham
High. Bellingham advanced five.
