League Pins Down Big Haul
By SCOTT SPRUILL
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

It took a while before West Valley and Prosser made their presence known in the championship finals of Saturday's Mat Classic, but when the time came it was loud and clear.

With four matches left in the 12th annual wrestling tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome, Prosser captured the 171- and 215-pound championships and the third-place team trophy and West Valley's Blake Busey pinned his way to the heavyweight title as the Rams finished second.

Bothell edged West Valley 1881/2 to 187 for the top trophy, and Prosser was third with 172 points. It was the highest Mat Classic finish ever for the two Mid-Valley League schools, and the league came away with five individual victories in the Northwest's largest single-day tournament.

"We started out real well today and just kept on going," said West Valley coach Rob Lagerquist. "We had only one kid in the finals but we had a lot of kids come back through the consolation rounds. We picked up a lot of points that way."

Busey's points were most impressive with four straight pins at 275, culminating with a first-round fall over Adam Starr of Bothell to wrap up the 10-hour competition.

"This is my senior year. I don't have anything left after this so I'm ready for this season," Busey said. "Today was great. I just felt stronger than normal."

Prosser's two senior finalists were also decisive winners as Brian Bishop (215) registered three straight pins before winning the final by injury default and Josh Smith (171) ended his unbeaten day with a technical fall.

Bishop and Smith placed eighth and 10th, respectively, here last year.

"I didn't do very good last year but I've come a long way. A lot of hard work," Smith said. "I wrestled some of the best guys in the state so maybe I've got a chance (at state)."

Bishop, who led his final 4-1 in the second period before the injury default, was preparing to take the mat when his teammate won. "I was focusing as much as I could but I was watching Josh," he said. "That got my psyched up."

In the early championship finals, Wapato's Rogelio Diaz was looking for a repeat and Selah's Zach Morgan was looking for redemption. Both got what they wanted, but Morgan wasn't smiling about it.

Diaz, a senior, captured his second straight Mat Classic 103 title, besting East Valley's Scott Thompson 9-2 in the final. Diaz's margin was only 2-0 heading into the third period.

"That's my round, the last one," Diaz said. "The last round shows who's got the conditioning and that's what I think my strength is."

Morgan was eagerly awaiting a rematch with Kamiakin's Mike Rodriguez, who edged Morgan 10-9 in last year's 112 final. Both went on to state titles, Rodriguez in Class 4A and Morgan in 3A, and both moved up to 119 this season.

The dream matchup was all set Saturday night as Morgan opened with two technical falls and then beat Bothell's Justin Davidson, a 4A state runner-up last year, in the semifinals.

But when the two rivals took the mat for the final, Rodriguez forfeited.

"His coaches said he wasn't feeling well, he's been fighting the flu," Morgan said. "It's frustrating because I've been waiting for that match for a long time and I was prepared in every way. It's nice to win, but I wanted to wrestle him."

Five other local wrestlers reached the finals and finished second in the 25-team tournament — Toppenish's Angel Gonzales (125), Wapato's Sammy Macias (130), Zillah's Rene Valadez (135), Eisenhower's Juan Pena (140) and East Valley's Jacob Holden (152).

In addition to Diaz, two others captured their second straight Mat Classic titles — Cheney's Kayle Gray (135) and Ferndale's Chet Slevin (189).
