S-W wrestlers clinch tie for league title
SEDRO-WOOLLEY -- The top-ranked Sedro-Woolley High School wrestling team clinched a tie for the Northwest 3A League dual-meet title on Wednesday night with a 50-20 victory over Bellingham.

The Cubs (6-0 league, 10-0 overall) head into tonight's league finale against rival Burlington-Edison (5-1) on a 20-match league winning streak and overall winning streak of 32.

"That'll be fun," Cubs Coach Jay Breckenridge said.

The shocker of Wednesday's meet came at 215 pounds, where Bellingham's Dane Mallahan stunned Jehra Moore, a state runner-up last season, 20-11.

"Jehra was by far the aggressor, but got stuck in a head and arm," Breckenridge said. "At least he got off his back. It's just one of those deals that remind you there are other guys in the weight class."

The evening's other feature match also went Bellingham's way. The Cubs moved 103-pounder Nathan Decker up to 112 to face Mike Woodruff, a state placer last year.

Woodruff won 1-0, the only point coming on a locking-hands call.

"It was a good match," Breckenridge said. "There wasn't a whole lot of action. We couldn't get out from the bottom. That's why he's wrestling bigger, to get ready for the league tournament. We're getting some hard matches for Nathan before the tournament."

Among those hard matches will be a possible contest tonight against Burlington's Juan Ortiz.

Ethan Sandelin (135), Patrick Janicki (145), Jonny Wicker (152), Ryan Ringhouse (160), Andy Goedl (171), T.J. Morris (275) and Zach Olsen (119) all won by pin for Sedro-Woolley on Wednesday. Patrick O'Neil (125) and Tanner McCoy (140) scored major decisions.
