All-Division Rankings for 2003-04

By Dave Gilbertson

with assistance from "MacTruck" and "Bikerman" anonymous contributors

1/1/2004 edition

Here are my All-division rankings for Washington state as of January 1, 2003.  The weights are still settling in and there will be some drops once the 2 pound allowance comes in early January.  These rankings are based on observations  and head to head scores.  When that is not possible then I go to my gut feeling and the feedback I get from a number of very knowledgeable people around the state, including MacTruck.  I have several other contributors but they have told me they would rather contribute anonymously so I have not mentioned their names but I certainly appreciate their help and input.

Some rankings have a wrestler ranked higher than the head-to-head result would dictate.  In those few occasions I listened to the input of others that those results would most likely not be duplicated in a rematch.

I hope these rankings are enjoyed by the readers and remember, they are just for fun.  No one should feel slighted if the are not mentioned, or if they are ranked differently than you think they should be.  It starts to  get REAL interesting in February!

103: Cory fish, the number one ranked wrestler in the pre-season rankings remains in that position by virtue of winning the very tough Tri-State Tournament in Northern Idaho in December 2003. In that tournament he defeated Kelly Kubec 3-1 and pinned Neal Ward in the finals. Fish also has USAW All-American credentials over the past 3-4 years to back up his number one ranking. Kelly Kubec is in the rankings after placing 3rd at Tri-State and and 7th at the Powerade in PA. He lost at Tri-State to Cory Fish 1-3. Anthony Hayes was the favorite at Pacific Coast Championships but lost to a fired up Ward in the semis by a score of 6-4.

Freshman Chase Smith took a large leap up the rankings based on taking 1st place at the Pacific Coast Championships in Vancouver, WA on December 29, 2003. In the tournament he defeated Kelsey, Crouter and Ward on the way to the title. The final match was won in double OT when Smith rode Ward out for 30 seconds. Neal Ward is also right there after placing 2nd at Tri-State and the Pacific Coast. Tyler Bowles has lost this year to Neal Ward and to Kelly Kubec and slips a bit from his number two ranking down to 6th place. Tyler is never one to be counted out and will be a definite factor come state. Waiting in the wings are other talented wrestlers that only need to beat a ranked wrestler to move into the top six. Kenny Kubec is still undefeated and Karlson Miller has a 10-4 win over Chase Smith although he has lost to the two Kubecs and Walt of Cascade.

112: Defending 112 pound state Champ Rick Yeager leads the list in this group and surprised me by returning to 112 as a senior. He will definitely be the guy for everyone else to gauge themselves by. This weight group already had a wealth of talent in it before he joined the fray and there are now 4 defending state champs listed in the group, and a ton of placers listed that that can challenge for the title. Vela took 1st at the Tri-State defeating Yonago in the finals. In 3rd place is Martin Salinas of Pasco who I believe is still undefeated and I was told looked very strong at the Best in the West Duals. Scott Thompson is the defending 2A champ and took first in the Yakima Dome Classic tournament. In 5th place I have Vinh Tran who has a win over Koontz by pin this year. There is lots of talk out there that Vinh Tran will win a 3A title this year but he will be challenged by some underclassman. Taylor Yonago placed 2nd at Tri-State in 2003 losing to Vela and has wins over Jones (6-5) and Bennett (Oin).

The list of challengers is long in this group and there are a number of undefeated wrestlers just waiting to get a shot at a ranked wrestler to see where they're at. Still undefeated are Trevor Hall, a freshman out of Battle Ground that just won the Sierra Classic in Reno, Jonny Gilbertson with 2 tournament titles under his belt this year and Jared Hudson of Bethell who moved back to Washington this year after being in Michigan for a while and placing at state. Kai Bruno of Meadowdale has been crushing people in the 3A division and his only loss this year is to Gilbertson in overtime. I haven't heard much from Fairley but he did take 4th in the Las Vegas 100 and looked very tough at state last year. This will be a very interesting group in Tacoma this year.

119: Mike Rodriquez is the number one choice at this weight but the question is, will he stay here or go to 125? He won Tri-State at 119 but entered the Pacific Coast Championships at 125 where he lost in the final to always tough Cory Vomnbaur in an OT match. In second is Gonzales but he also wrestled up at 125 in the Pacific Coast Championships and also lost in OT to Vombaur. Where will these two be at state is a good question. They are a title threat at either weight and both have been in the USAW national finals for Greco Roman.

Tony Cantu is very tough and has wins over John Bennett (twice) and Nathan Decker. I see him as the favorite for the 2A title. Nathan Decker of SW and Juan Ortiz of neighboring Burlington hold the 4th and 6th placers. Decker has lost to Gonzales (3-8) and Cantu (1-2) but has beaten Raybell and Foy in winning the Pacific Coast Championships. Ortiz is a senior who placed 3rd in 3A last year. Bennett has loses to Cantu and Yanago (pinned at 112). Mendez, Raybell and Mather are all talented wrestlers who will have a say in the final state standings in February.

125: Cory Vombaur has shot to the top of the list with wins over two top ranked wrestlers from Oregon and then with wins over Gonzales and Rodriquez at the Pacific Coast Championships. From what I understand, wrestling this kid is like wrestling an octopus, you just can't get away. He is the younger brother of a 3X state champ that never lost a high school match and was an NCAA AA. Vombaur might be beatable but it will take a flawless effort on someone's part to do it. Make a mistake with this kid, get behind in the score and it is over!

Challenging in this weight are Lester Brown and David Howard. Brown has continued with the talent he displayed last year while David Howard is having a breakthrough year as a Sophomore. He already has wins over Lomsdalen, Muri, Barnes and Medrano and is undefeated. I see big things for him this year. Muri and Klein are two returning state champs that I'm sure will be there at the end battling for titles although you never know for sure. Muri lost to Howard and Klein lost to O'Neil of Sedro Woolley although he was wrestling up a weight group. Manual Plata in 6th place has won a medal all three years at state and is a title threat again this year. Last year he lost to Sitch in the semis by a score of 4-3.

Brandon Shetlin has been out injured but I have been assured that he is training and will be back mid-season to try and improve on last years 2nd place finish to Sitch were he lost 3-4. Kelly Austrang is right there banging on the door to be ranked with the other guys. Among the other contenders are Hurtado, Wood, English and Barnes.

130: Davidson retains the top spot here after defeating #2 ranked Nakashima at the Pacific Coast Championships by a score of 4-3 and is a 2x state placer. Nakashima has wins over Cristelli and English and went right down to the wire with Davidson. Matt Roll is also having a good year. He lost to an Oregon wrestler but came back strong to place 3rd at the Pacific Coast Championships. He also has wins over English , Kelly and Simmons. Ryan Conley is the defending 2A champ but I haven't heard of any big match-ups for him yet this year.

Ricky Valdes moves up to 5th with an undefeated season so far with a title at the Sun Dome Championships. He was a state champ two years ago but took last year off. Like Knight at 135, it doesn't look like the layoff hurt him! Tim Whitley is in 6th with a Sun Dome title and a win over Plata. Others to watch for are Eastman with a win over Onufer, Kelly with a win over Onufer, and let's not forget, Shane Onufer. O'Neil has beaten Klien and Shattock and lost to Davidson, Chellson and English.

135: Kubec won the Tri-State this year beating Sitch in the final by a score of 8-2. He also placed 5th at the Powerade tournament in PA in December 2003. Sitch is a sophomore who took state last year (3A) and I believe his only loss is to Kubec. He has beaten Ford (6-4), Swartz (6-4) and Leenhouts (3-2) and is a solid choice to repeat his state title at 135. In 3rd place is Devin Knight of Sedro Woolley who is back after taking his junior year off. He was state runner-up in both his freshman and sophomore years and it looks like the rust is shaking off properly. I saw him win the Skagit Invite over Kipperberg.

Charles Campbell has a victory over Leenhouts (5-2) under his belt to give him the 4th rank, right above Leenhouts. Jake Leenhouts is a defending state 1A champion. Tyler Roshau is in 6th place right now and rising. He is having a breakout year, just like David Howard at 125. Roshau beat Kipperberg 13-0, Holcumb 5-4, lost to Kubec 2-3 at Tri-State and is just really shaking things up in that group. Keep your eye on this raising star! In the wrestlers to watch we have Kipperberg who seemed to start out the season a little rocky but looks like he is now hitting stride with high placing at Skagit and Pacific Coast Championships. Lots of rough guys here.

140: Greg Ford is back at River Ridge and looks ready for a title run. He did lose to Sitch by a score of 4-6 but I heard that went right down to the end before the match was decided. Ward is back to defend his 3A title and has a win over Morrow already this season by a 7-4 margin. Jones of Burlington is in 3rd and has a win over young Ricky Dorward by a score of 7-4. In 4th place is Yonago of Ferris who took 2nd at Tri-State and has a win over Swartz (9-4).

Bauer was 2nd in state last year and just took 2nd at the Pacific Coast Championships. He lost to an Oregon wrestler there but he does have a 9-0 win over Blake Willard. Richards in 6th has a loss to Bauer by pin but took 3rd at the Pacific Coast Championships. This group has a surprising number of underclassmen that will be challenging the upperclassmen at state. Look for Pitsch, Swartz, Port, Morrow and Dorward to make life very difficult for some seniors. Swartz is doing well and is starting to compete like he did when he was the terror of kids wrestling.

145: Sherfey is the top of this group as the defending state 4A champion. He is undefeated this year with wins over Lee Morrison of Okanogan (7-2) and Chris Morrison of Clovis West (10-9) in CA. Tyler was a USAW Junior AA in 2003. Morrison is in 2nd place and has loses to Sherfey and Willy Ives but the Ives loss was wrestling up in weight. Lee was 1A champ last year and 3rd in freestyle state.

Craig Jackson placed 4th in state in 2002 but DNP in 2003. I talked with him at Skagit and he was very disappointed with 2003 and vowed to make up for it this year. This guy wrestles without fear and just wades in, grabs them and launches them. Our high school coach was with me at Skagit and told me to watch "this kid." It was Jackson in the finals and I turned around to look and Jackson just launched his opponent with a HUGE lateral drop. He has beaten Stewart and Senter already this year.

Chris Stewart is in 4th place with a loss to Jackson and Nick Webb is in 5th. Webb was 3rd in state last year but I can't verify if he is wrestling right now or not. Craig Senter finishes the top six with a win over Pitsch and a 5th place finish at Pacific Coast Championships.

152: I have Mikey Sewell in 1st place but things got a little tougher in this group when I saw that Bounds is going 152 instead of 145. That doesn't mean he won't drop but 152 is probably his state weight. Both of these guys are defending state champs and Bounds was Cadet National Greco Roman champion in 2003. It is very tough to decide between these two but I give Mikey the nod by a hair. Mikey has a win over #4 ranked Studer and Bounds has a win over #5 Stover 5-4.

Torres was an absolute beast at the Skagit invite and pinned McCoy in the finals. Studer is in 4th but has losses to Sewell and Janicki. Patrick Janicki is currently recovering from an injury but plans on returning. Stover has a win over Kelly 5-4 and placed 2nd at the Pacific Coast Championships. Sean McNulty is in 6th place on the strength of his 8-6 win over Janicki on 12/6/03. This group has a lot of talent waiting in the wings to move up if somebody slips up. There is Brent Larson, Pat Kelly (beat Stover and McCoy by 1 point), McCoy and a host of others.

160: I haven't seen the 2003-04 edition of Mike Johnson but my sources say he is an improved version from last year, and last year he was outstanding! He gets the pick in a tight call over Tony Dorward on the strength of a second straight Tri-State title and reports of his power. Dorward is another wrestler that at a different weight would be number one or, he might be number one later this year. He has a win over Hanson already this year by fall. Carlyle Scott is in third and just came back from placing 2nd at the Sierra Classic in Reno with 91 teams.

The raising star in the group is sophomore Brent Criswell of South Kitsap. I had heard stories of this young man. I saw him wrestle at Skagit Invite and saw that he is the real deal. He is very mature for a sophomore and his only loss that I'm aware of this year is to the #1 ranked Oregon wrestler by a score of 3-4 in the Pacific Coast Championships finals. Keep your eye on this one as he may REALLY shake some things up at state! Norman Orr of Marysville is having a great season after placing 5th at state last year. Troy Hanson has losses to Dorward and Arand (4-11) from Oregon but also has wins over McCoy and Petty.

171: This is an interesting group. I have Haukenberry ranked number one but I haven't seen many results on him. He is ranked on what I know he is capable of. Second is Hazenberg who has secured wins over Rudiski 6-4 and Creighton in OT. Rudiski of Vashon is in 3rd with the close loss to Hazenberg and Mark Dodge is in 4th. Dodge has split 2 matches with Horaski and with Craig. Each time he lost the 1st match but won on the rematch. Horaski has wins over Dodge and Harris and loses to Snyder (4-6) and an Oregon wrestler. Craig of Bethell moves into the number 6 spot based on wins over Dodge and Grady and placing 4th at the Pacific Coast Championships. Also watch for Harris, Snyder, Creighton and Grady to rise.

189: Another very tough group with tough choices at the top. Slevin retains the top spot even with a loss to Leonard from Lake Stevens. That loss was wrestling at 215 and I'm sure Slevin will be at 189, if he is not already there. Bressler is 2nd and could just as easily be in 1st. I would love to see the top four in this group in a round robin tournament! Mattingly took 1st place at Tri-State and many say he is the best in the state.

Scott Labrash beat Bressler by decision at regionals last year but got pinned by Bressler in the state finals. Last week we could have had a rematch at Pacific Coast Championships but Labrash got pinned by a couple of Oregon kids and ended up in 4th place. 5th place is Brad Padgett but, like with Haukenberry, I haven't heard any results on Brad this year so I'm basing this on potential. In 6th place I have Bell of Mariner (south Everett) who was the OW at Mariner tournament and took first at the Tumwater Invitational.

215: Jay Carlile of Battle Ground is in first based on winning the Sierra Classic in Reno. Jay has been around wrestling since he was a small child and has a wealth of experience. He will be tough to beat although we have a few others that can give him a run for his money. Garret Johnson comes to mind and was my number one pick until he lost to Fraser at Tri-State. He avenged that loss wrestling Fraser for 3rd place and winning 6-1. He will be going for his 3rd straight high school title.

Lorenson is next based on taking 3rd place at Tri-State and beating Fraser 8-4. Matt Leonard is a force and will give the other guys all they could want in a match. Leonard took 5th at Tri-State and 5th at the Powerade in PA. He also has a win over Chet Slevin by a 5-0 score. Fraser of East Valley is in 5th based on his 4th place finish at Tri-State and the early rounds win over Johnson. Vlahos is a physical specimen that can muscle his way through most difficulties. He placed third at the recent Pacific Coast Championships. He lost to Hawk by a score of 0-4 early on but won the 3rd place award over Hawk by injury default.

275: Another very tough group to sort out and I wish we could round robin the top four. Farmer placed first at the Pacific Coast Championships tournament and if you saw the video on WashingtonPreps.com of him hitting the low single takedown in the finals, you know that he has something special going on. I have been hearing that he wrestles in the 275 group like he is a 103 pounder. After seeing that takedown, I would have to agree and he may be the best in the state. Hopefully he'll get to wrestle one or both of the next two ranked guys.

I gave the next place to Shaw based on winning the Tri-State tournament by injury default over Berry. It is my understanding that these two are very close in ability and I don't know what happened with the Injury default. Osborn of Lake Stevens is also starting to get on a roll. He was 3rd at Tri-State and took 4th at Powerade in PA. Both his Powerade loses were by one point. Rushin of Kamiakin is in 4th place and has a loss to Farmer by a 1-6 score. Berry has a win over Reffett 10-4 and a loss to Shaw by injury. Hall lost to Osborn 1-6 at Tri-State and ended up in 4th place there. In the others to watch we have Reffett with a win over Vandermolen 9-6 and a close loss to Hall by 3-4. Clapp of Kennedy has won 2 tournaments. Jordan and Altona have each won a tournament.
