Oak Harbor rallies to beat Snohomish

Herald staff

SNOHOMISH - Starting well is always important, but a strong finish can turn the tide.

That was the case Tuesday night as the Snohomish wrestling team started off with a pin (Spencer Whitlock at 189 pounds), but later gave up early leads to Oak Harbor, which rallied to remain unbeaten with a 37-26 Western Conference North meet victory.

Bobby Pegues (112 pounds) and Steve Lemme (125) both rallied from third-period deficits to earn huge pins for Oak Harbor.

"That was the difference in the match right there," said Snohomish coach Kevin Judkins, whose team dropped 0-1 in league and 4-2 overall.

"We wrestled really well," Judkins added, "but it was just a matter of finishing the last 30 seconds."

Oak Harbor (2-0, 4-0) tallied three pins during the meet.

Mack Stach (175 pounds) had an impressive pin for the Panthers, Judkins added. Stach's pin came 19 seconds into the third period.

215:
Matt Leonard(LS) DEF Chet Slevin(FER) 5-0
Slevin was the better wrestler. I'm not sure if Leonard atempted a shot the whole match. Slevin was just giving up too much weight. It was 0-0 in the first round with Slevin initiating the action. Leonard chose down in the second and was almost turned. Leonard got the escape and then Slevin wade a mistake. He tried an arm spin and got under Leorard. Takedown Leonard. Slevin chose both up in the 3rd Slevin tried to attack and got a stall warning. Slevin then tried a leg attack and got caught under Leonard. Takedown number 2. How good is Leonard? I don't know. I would like to see more of him.
275:
Osborne (LS) PINNED Altona(FER)

As you may have noticed there was no Squalicum. Big loss. Lake Stevens won the tournament.
