LYNNWOOD - Kamiak registered five of its six pins in the first round to secure a 54-15 Wesco South wrestling dual-meet win over Meadowdale Thursday.

Kamiak 189-pounder Nate Hadely dispatched his opponent in 35 seconds at 189 pounds.

The heavyweights staged a titanic battle with Meadowdale's Jeremy Harbison prevailing 9-8 in double overtime.

Derek Miller (119) and Brian Capp (152) had Meridian's wins in a match in which eight of the 14 victories came by forfeit.

Both schools are at Saturday's Joe Beam King of the County tournament Friday and Saturday at Sehome.

EDMONDS - Edmonds-Woodway got some help from its junior varsity squad to post an upset wrestling victory over Mountlake Terrace in a Wesco South meet Tuesday night.

Freshman Michael Schaecher, stepping in for an injured varsity player, defeated Nate Dabling 20-4 at 125 pounds and the Warriors (2-3 in league, 3-5 overall) handed the Hawks (5-1, 7-2) their first league defeat of the season with a 36-31 win. It was Schaecher's varsity debut.

"The kids really stepped it up and stayed focused and there was definitely an energy boost," said Warriors coach Mike Hatchett.

Terrace improves to 5-0 in Wesco South    Herald staff
 

Lynnwood - Mountlake Terrace remained undefeated and on top in the Wesco South following a 36-26 victory over Meadowdale Thursday.

The Mavericks' (2-2 in league, 3-4 overall) Kai Bruno (130 pounds) started the evening with a decisive 16-0 technical fall victory. "Watching Kai is like watching a clinic," Hawks' coach Kanoe Vierra said.

The next three bouts were won by Mountlake Terrace (4-0, 7-1). Bryce Call (135) pinned his opponent, Mike Brady (140) scored an escape in triple overtime to win a 6-5 decision, and Kody Cundy (145) achieved a three-point near fall at the end of the third period to defeat the Mavericks' Tony Yen in a bout Vierra called "thrilling."

The Hawks do not have long to enjoy their status as division leaders. In the next two weeks they have meets with third-place Kamiak (3-1, 8-5) and second-place Everett (4-0, 6-0).

"It just doesn't get easier, the toughest part of the schedule is ahead." Vierra said.

LYNDEN 37, SQUALICUM 34: The Lions won two of the last three matches to beat the Storm in a Northwest League match at Squalicum.

It was the first time Lynden beat Squalicum, Lions coach Dave Weidkamp said.

"That was a nice win for us," Weidkamp said. "The kids looked really aggressive."

The Lions' final two wins came from Darren Korthuis with a pin at 145 pounds and Mike Heutink with a 11-1 victory at 152 pounds.

Lynden (2-1 overall and NWL) will travel Thursday to Ferndale.

After Burlington had pins in the first two matches, Ferndale 171-pounder Cody Leifheit began a string of pins for the Golden Eagles. Brice Cobean (189), Chad Woods (215) and Matt Carr (275) also had pins. But Adam Gomez (125) and David Atwood (135) earned the only victories from Ferndale from that point on.

FERNDALE 42, OAK HARBOR 36: The Golden Eagles won the first four matches by pin and went on to a non-league victory at Oak Harbor.

Ferndale (2-2) started with pins by Cody Leifheit (171), Brice Cobean (189), Chad Woods (215) and Derek Altona (275) in beating an Oak Harbor squad that tied for second in the 24-team Battle at the Border tournament two weeks ago.

Leifheit and Altona remained unbeaten on the season.

Devin Krenz came from behind to score a pin at 130 for Ferndale, and co-captain Devin Sanders also rallied for a key win, gaining a 7-6 decision at 152.

The Golden Eagles, who won a big tournament last weekend at Yakima, were missing three wrestlers (injuries, grades) and lost two matches by forfeit.

"We haven't been at full strength yet," coach Nate Button said. "I'm looking forward to see how we'll do when we have everyone."

Ferndale will next wrestle on Jan. 4 at Burlington-Edison. The school will play host to a meet on Jan. 5 that matches a Northwest all-star team and a touring Japanese national squad.
