COEUR d'ALENE, Id. - The Lake Stevens Vikings wrestling team needed a pin and they needed it badly.

Heading into the final match of the Tri-State tournament, the Vikings' Clint Osborn needed to pin Blake Cord of Idaho's Timberlake High School in order to give Lake Stevens the team title.

Osborn came through, earning a fall with about a minute to go in the second round to give the Vikings enough points to tie University High School of Spokane at 178.5 points apiece. Lake Stevens won the title based on criteria, meaning the Vikings had more champions (3) than University (2).

The Vikings' Kelly Kubec earned a 7-4 decision over Auburn-Riverside's Michael Mangrum to take the crown at 112-pounds. Teammate Lester Brown earned the individual title at 135 pounds with a 7-1 decision over Josh Maines of Coeur d'Alene.

Lake Stevens, the defending Class 4A state champions, won the two-day event - which boasts nearly 50 teams from Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington - for the third time in the last six years.

Other top finishers for Lake Stevens included: Blake Tate (fourth place, 152 pounds); Brock Austen (3rd, 140); and Kai Van Leuven (4th, 145).

T-BIRDS TRIUMPH AT TOURNEY

Tumwater was the top team at the annual Hall of Fame Tournament held at Clover Park High School. The Thunderbirds won all three of their dual meets, first taking out Lindbergh 79-0, beating Clover Park 53-16 and finally ousting Cascade of Everett 36-28 in the finals.

"Cascade had gotten second at the Battle of the Border, and they beat White River in a dual, so I assumed they'd be good," Tumwater coach Tony Prentice said. "But we got on a roll and took it to 'em."

Chad Montermini (125 pounds) was one of seven Thunderbirds wrestlers who won all three of their matches. Patrick Prentice (130), Tanner Weiks (135), Ricky Robbins (140), Josh Hoglan (152), Cody Cochran (215) and A.J. Pulczinski (275) all went undefeated for Tumwater. M-P fends off Snohomish, 28-25 in Wesco North meet

MARYSVILLE - In a contest decided by the last match of the night, Marysville-Pilchuck lost the bout but won 28-25 over Wesco North rival Snohomish Thursday.

M-P held a six-point lead before the final bout, the 275-pound match pitting the Tomahawks' Denis Moynihan against Matt Stach. A Snohomish pin or M-P default would tie the score and give the Panthers the victory based on tiebreaker criteria.

Moynihan weighed in at 202 but wrestled as a heavyweight to avoid giving Snohomish a forfeit. He held his own against his heavier opponent and lost the bout by only one point to seal M-P's victory.

"It was a great match," said M-P assistant wrestling coach John Hodgkins. "It's a big win when we beat Snohomish. They wrestle well and don't make mistakes."

M-P fell behind early, but rallied in the middle bouts. Juan Escalante (135 pounds) scored an 18-8 major decision against Brian Hise followed by victories in the 140-, 145- and 152-pound matches.

Kamiak beats M-P with wins in final three matches

Herald staff  12/1/04

MUKILTEO - Kamiak won its final three matches to overcome a nine-point deficit and beat Marysville-Pilchuck 36-30 in a non-conference meet Thursday night at Kamiak High School.

The Knights never led until Jon Baldwin pinned his 103-pound opponent in the final bout of the meet.

"It was a great to come out with a win over a great team like Marysville in the first meet of the year," Kamiak coach Dan Hanika said. "That's not just a great team. It's an established program with a great coaching staff."

Trailing 30-21 with three matches remaining, Kamiak 215-pound wrestler Dan Michaels held on for a 7-2 victory that essentially went four rounds. Hanika said the second round's results were wiped out because of a refereeing error and the round was re-wrestled.

"He gutted that one out for us," Hanika said of Michaels.

Joe Huss evened the score at 30-30 by winning at 275 to put the match in Baldwin's hands.

Huss and his younger brothers, Nick and Paul, made school history by becoming the first set of three brothers to wrestle varsity matches on the same night. Nick won at 140 pounds and Paul pinned his opponent in the 171 match.

Hanika was pleased by the performance of Eric Morton, who won by an 11-0 major decision at 130 pounds.

Sean Rich (135) and Chris Munoz (160) also won for the Knights.

"It was a great meet," Hanika said. "All of the kids wrestled hard. There were some kids we didn't expect to win who stepped up, and some kids we expected to win who didn't win."

Hanika believes his team will be tough to beat this season.

"We feel we can compete with anybody," he said. "(The victory over M-P) was a great accomplishment for our kids."
