Young Boxers No Match For Experienced Cardinals

The nation's top-ranked junior college team uses four first round pins in the
first six matches to quickly outdistance themselves from the Boxers

FOREST GROVE - The top-ranked junior college team in the nation proved too
powerful for a young Pacific squad Thursday as North Idaho scored a 43-3 victory
over the Boxers in men's wrestling action at the Pacific Athletic Center.
The Cardinals used four first round pins to quickly distance themselves from the
Boxers and improve their dual meet record to 5-0 overall. Pacific, who lost two
more starters over the weekend to injuries in Aaron Fernandez (Jr., Lanai City,
Hawaii) and Aaron Bales (Sr., North Bend, Ore.), dropped to 0-3 in duals.
Jeff Hedges started things off for the Cardinals, needing only 1:35 to pin Ryan
Kuroda (So., Beaverton, Ore.) at 125 pounds. Kevin Spangler (Jr., Moscow, Idaho)
cut the team score in half with the Boxers' only win of the night at 133 pounds.
Spangler held off a late run by Cody Nicholson in the third period for the 7-4
victory.
North Idaho scored three more pins in the next four matches to build a
commanding 27-3 lead. Nick Byrd (Fr., Rainier, Ore.) engaged in the only non-pin
match of the bunch at 149 pounds. Byrd trailed Coby Jones by two after a third
round reversal before Byrd was able to escape with seven seconds left. The
freshman could not score with the time remaining and Jones escaped with the 8-7
victory.
Nick Locke (Fr., Tualatin, Ore.) continued his strong start with a very close
match at 174 pounds. Nick Wright started the bout with a takedown, but Locke's
escape with a minute left made it 2-1. Both wrestlers ground it out from the top
position in the subsequent rounds, however, to make the score stand up.
Josh Edmundon scored a major decision at 184 pounds over Derek Hendrix (So.,
Prineville, Ore.) and Jake Kallestat took an 8-2 decision over Garren Bremer
(Sr., Corvallis, Ore.) at 197 pounds.
Both the Boxers and Cardinals will return to the tournament circuit Saturday,
traveling south to take part in Southern Oregon's Best of the West Tournament.
