NIC's Hedges places sixth at Las Vegas wrestling tourney

LAS VEGAS -- North Idaho College wrestler Jeff Hedges was a pretty popular guy on Saturday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Hedges, a sophomore 125-pounder from Havre, Mont., placed sixth at the prestigious tournament, in which 49 of the 52 teams were four-year schools.

Hedges is only the second NIC wrestler to place at this tournament under coach Pat Whitcomb, in his ninth season at the helm. Keri Stanley placed eighth two years ago.

"That's a big deal for us," said Whitcomb, who placed fourth at the tournament in 1986 while at NIC. "I've had national champs and All-Americans. There were a good 7-10 Division 1 coaches watching his matches and talking to him. He upped his stock, that's for sure."

Hedges went 4-1 on Friday and 2-2 on Saturday. He beat Ricky Deubel of Edinboro 7-5 in his first match on Saturday, then pinned Eric Stevenson of Oregon State in 4 minutes, 10 seconds. Hedges lost 3-1 to Tanner Gardner of Stanford in the consolation semifinals, and fell 3-2 to Austin DeVoe of Missouri 3-2 in the match for fifth and sixth place.

"As the tournament went on, he got stronger and stronger, whereas some of the other guys got beat down," Whitcomb said. "His key was just keeping focused for all of his matches."

The other nine NIC entrants were eliminated Friday.

Cardinals win the close ones, beat Northwest Wyoming

COEUR d'ALENE -- The North Idaho College wrestling team found a way to finish off some close matches Friday night, improving to 7-0 in duals this fall with a 27-12 victory over Northwest Wyoming College of Powell, Wyo., at Christianson Gym.

Jeff Hedges at 125 pounds, Josh Erickson at 165 and Robby Shaw at 285 were each tied or behind entering the third period, only to manufacture points late in their matches to claim victory.

Hedges, coming off a sixth-place finish in the Las Vegas Invitational last weekend, started off the night with a tough 10-8 decision over Trappers freshman Kalen Wilson, breaking a 6-6 tie with a quick takedown to begin the third period.

Hedges, a returning All-American, said he was still feeling the effects of a long weekend in Vegas.

"It just wasn't my best match tonight," said Hedges, who is only the second wrestler to place at Vegas in Pat Whitcomb's nine years as coach. "(In the final period) I just knew that I had to win. That's when it helps to have another year of experience."

"I was glad to see him gut it out and get the win there," Whitcomb said.

Erickson was in a chess match with fellow sophomore Chris Riding. Riding led 2-1 after an early escape in the final period, but Erickson scored an aggressive double-leg takedown with 48 seconds remaining and rode Riding out for a 4-2 win.

"Towards the end, I could see him getting a little bit tired," said Erickson, a national qualifier and Region 18 champ last year. "I just snapped him to the side and shot in ... he had no reaction time."

"He took a shot, came out, and went right back in and got the double-leg," Whitcomb said. "That's something we've been working on."

The last match of the evening -- the heavyweights -- went the longest as Shaw, a freshman, needed overtime to beat NWC's Spencer Bowles. Bowles was awarded a point in the final few seconds of regulation -- Shaw was cited for stalling -- tying the match at 3-all.

Neither wrestler attempted the low route in regulation, but Shaw took matters into his own hands with a powerful double-leg takedown, putting an end to the match less than 20 seconds into extra time.

"Whoever got to the legs first was going to win the match," Shaw said.

Shaw was confident his opponent would not be able to take him to the mat.

"After the first round, it just wasn't going to happen," he said.

Whitcomb said his team is injury-free and "rolling," despite the fact that he's been working them pretty hard.

"We want to work them to the ground at the end of semester, because they're going to have Christmas break off," he said. "We've got to take care of business. One of our goals was to be 9-0 in duals going into the break."

NIC plays host to Southwestern Oregon today at 5 p.m. and Clackamas on Thursday before the holiday break.

125 -- Jeff Hedges, NIC, d. Kalen Wilson, 10-8. 133 -- Cody Nicholson, NIC, d. Eric Tapia, 9-2. 141 -- Heinrich Barnes, NIC, p. Ross Montour, 3:47. 149 -- CJ Rathjen, NW, d. Coby Jones, 7-5. 157 -- Jake Friedman, NIC, d. Eric Coxbill, 8-3. 165 -- Josh Erickson, NIC, d. Chris Riding, 4-2. 174 -- Julius Rios, NW, d. Nick Wright, 11-4. 184 -- Josh Edmondson, NIC, by forfeit. 197 -- Shawn Vincent, NW, p. Brandon Darnall, 2:19. Hwt -- Robby Shaw, NIC, d. Spencer Bowles, 5-3 (OT).

"This weekend we traveled North to Canada to face Simon Frasier and Douglass Community College. It appeared as though we were evenly matched against Simon Frasier. However, a questionable pin made that match seem a lot closer than it actually was. The final score against Simon Frasier was 23-21. Meanwhile, we easily handled Douglas who only had 5 starters and mixed in some of Simon Frasier's extra wrestlers.
The breakdown is as follows"

125 Desean Willis tf Rafia Charania(SFU) 17-2, then pinned Aso Palani Doug.

133 Isaac Wing d. Levi Somers 12-5, then pinned Raj Virdi Doug.

141 Tanner McCoy d. Bo Gregson 7-6, then lost to Adam Harada Doug. 11-9

149 Justin Studer p. Hardeep Aujla, then was pinned by Jesse Arnett Doug.

157 Michael Markay d. Finlay Marshall 11-5, then lost to Johannes Minor Doug. 14-10

165 David Krawayk p. Chris Grady, then Grady p. Manvir Sahota Doug.

174 Lionel Orji d. Paul Murphy 9-4 OT, then lost to Joe Brakefield Doug. 12-9

184 Brad Padgatt d. Simon Frasier 9-2, and p. Harvey Nijjar Doug.

197 Ali Al-Rekabi d. Roy Chambers 15-4, and was p. by Jordan Bryant (Doug.)

"Overall I thought our team wrestled real well, especially coming off Thanksgiving Break. Our team will have 3 dual meets this Friday starting at 10:00 AM at Highline!"
