NHSCA Republic, Washington State Qualifier

4/14/06

Tournament Recap

Posted by Cucumber on 4/20/2006, 2:05 pm, in reply to "Republic Results?"

The 2006 Republic, Washington State Qualifier is finally behind us, and what an event it was! We ended up with 127 wrestlers overall, with 38 Little Tyke (K-3) and Elementary (3-6) entries, 53 Middle School (7-9) entries, and 36 High School (9-12) participants. Despite having bigger numbers than originally expected, the tournament still managed to run very smoothly with no interruptions. Additionally, the folks working in the kitchen and refreshment bar provided some really good eats for all in attendance.
The wrestling itself was fantastic! There were at least four state champions competing, along with several Mat Classic Participants and some future champions coming up through the Elementary and Middle School ranks.
With the increasing numbers, we will definitely be using at least four full-sized mats next year. If you attended our tournament last year, you'll remember that we only used two mats in one gym for all divisions and still finished at about the same time. We didn't anticipate our numbers to more than double, so we thought the gamble of one extra mat would be enough. Hopefully I can utilize another program's hospitality in acquiring another set of mats for next year's event.
I also received some good advice from other folks. Our HS/MS mats got a little "over-run", with exhibitions falling into play before all the formal brackets were finished. I assure you that this was not by design, but when you have one bracket with only two total rounds and another with five, it's hard to get some of those kids to stick around all day waiting for an exhibition opportunity unless you slip one in once in a while. I pledge that we will attempt to better manage this next year. By adding another mat to the other gym, this will definitely help in this endeavor.

There are so many people to thank that I don't know where to start. I thank all of the parents, coaches, and volunteers who worked so diligently in the execution of this tournament. The chemistry displayed by all directly resulted in a very smoothly run event. I'd like to thank the Republic School District for allowing the use of their facilities. I'd like to thank Kyle Dodge and the Mary Walker (Springdale) School District for the use of their mats and for all Kyle's volunteer help. I've already forgotten his name, but to the Tonasket dad who stepped up to help with the Elementary bracketing, THANK YOU. I give thanks to Lee Gilford of Marysville for stepping up to help pass out t-shirts at registration in the morning. That says a lot for a guy who drove 5+ hours to get to our fine community. Thank you to Anderson's Grocery for the donated items, and to our local motels for negotiating such reasonable rates for all the traveling families. To all the parents and coaches who helped me in politicking and endorsing our tournament, I say THANK YOU and ask you that you continue "Spreading the word" for next year. I thank our officials; Andy Lampy, Bill Higgins, Joe Finsen, and David Hamilton. Thank you for PUTTING IN a long day and PUTTING UP with the occasional crap that comes with this often-thankless job.
THANK YOU PARENTS for sacrificing part of such a sacred weekend in the Easter Season. I realize that many of you drove hundreds of miles to share this experience, and I deeply appreciate it.
I'd like to thank all the wrestlers for stepping up to the plate and "Bringing it", from the Kindergarteners just cutting their teeth, to the outgoing HS seniors. You provided a great day of wrestling for all of us to enjoy.

Finally, I'd like to give thanks to CHRIST for not only providing the means for such a fun event to occur, but for protecting our kids and families during transportation and in the course of competition. With a full day of wrestling behind us, there were no serious injuries sustained.
Thanks to all, and we'll see you again next year!
