Snohomish edges Mead in Panther Classic
Herald Staff

SNOHOMISH - It was only fitting that two teams of Panthers would battle it out at the 16-team Panther Classic, and the local cats from Snohomish edged out Spokane's Mead Panthers in the 23rd annual tournament on Saturday.

Snohomish relied on a pair of upsets of No. 1 seeds to earn a 209.5-204.5 overall team victory. Unseeded junior Troy Walker took the 130-pound class title for Snohomish as did fellow unseeded teammate Nick Mundell at 189 pounds.

"It was a great team effort," Snohomish coach Kevin Judkins said. "All fourteen of our kids scored. It was a tight battle, but our younger kids were able to get some points and that makes a difference in a meet this size."

Cascade finished third in the tourney, just 9.5 points behind Mead as Randall Walt (103 pounds), Kiel Bates (125), Jonny Gilbertson (135) and Blake Vigoren (171) won at their respective weight classes.

Kamiak finished eighth, led by third place finishes from Erik Morton (135) and Shawn O'Donnell (140). Jackson was 10th with impressive showings from Ramsey Nijem, who tied for third at 160, and Harrison Warner, a third-place finisher at 215.
