The Puyallup High wrestling team is starting to peak at the right time.
On Saturday at the Willie C. Stewart Sr. Invitational at Foss High School, the
Vikings put on a dominating show with a pair of champions and ran away with the
team title with 148 points, well ahead of runner-up Lakes (117).
Led by one of the team captains, 145-pounder Frank Geiger, who won the
outstanding wrestler award for the upper weight classes, Puyallup showed its
muscle with five finalists.
Geiger pinned his opponent in the final – Corey Brown of Foss – at the 1:20
mark, catching many off guard.
“It was a takedown to a fall,” a humble Geiger explained.
Sophomore Kameron Bitney (112) nabbed a title by pulling out a 7-6 decision
against David Haight of Lakes.
Whitney Condor (103), Ian Ashenbrenner (171) and Tracey Lyons (215) finished in
second place for the Vikings.
Puyallup coach Bryan Bartelson was pleased with his team.
“They came out and wrestled tough and they met their goals,” Bartelson said.
“It’s nice to get good competition close to home.”
Puyallup was one of the 14 teams who made their first appearance at the
tournament that used to be known as the Martin Luther King Jr. tournament until
this year when the tournament was renamed to honor longtime Tacoma educator and
former school board member Willie C. Stewart Sr.
Foss coach Ron Ellis thought the decision to rename his tournament was easy when
he got an opportunity to honor his former Lincoln principal Stewart.
“I wish more people would recognize our local community leaders,” Ellis said.
Stewart, a proud parent of two Foss graduates, was more than grateful.
“I’m overwhelmed with humility to be honored by Foss High School,” Stewart said.
Foss had a pair of winners in Kyle Brown (152) and Levi Reynolds (275). Brown,
who won at the tournament two years ago, pulled out a 10-8 decision over Eric
Wilson of Sumner.
Fife had trio of champions in Kenny Baker (130), Nick Miller (135) and Chris
Sales (140).
Aaron Smith (125) of Kent-Meridian was awarded outstanding wrestler of the meet
and he won an impressive physical final against Josh Yslas of Lakes, 17-4.
