Red Raiders top Tigers

Bellingham hands B-EHS its second straight tough wrestling loss

BURLINGTON — Teams sometimes face tough schedules at the beginning of the season, but having to tackle the state’s top two Class 3A schools back-to-back is well beyond tough.

Brutal is a more apt description.

Not only did the Burlington-Edison wrestling team host top-ranked Sedro-Woolley to open the Northwest 3A League season, but following close on the Cubs’ heels was Tuesday night’s opponent, Bellingham.

The Red Raiders showed why many consider them Sedro-Woolley’s top challenger in the league — and in the state — by beating the Tigers 40-21.

Burlington-Edison, which lost to Sedro-Woolley 60-18, is 0-2 in the Northwest 3A League.

“We’ve wrestled outstanding, considering what we’ve gone up against and the level of experience,” Tigers coach Kirk Hamilton said. “They battled for everything they got, but those Bellingham kids are something. They’re deep.”
The match against Bellingham got off to a start similar to the one last week, with the Red Raiders winning eight of the first nine matches.

The Red Raiders were shorthanded after an injury to their 103-pounder, and moved the middle of their lineup up a weight to compensate.

“We did what we needed to do,” Bellingham coach Brian Smith said. “We didn’t plan on any pins. We planned on beating kids and our boys followed the plan. It was impressive.”

The move made for competitive matches at many of the weights, but Bellingham came out on top in most of them. In the first match, at 119 pounds, J.T. Fitzgerald’s last-second takedown secured an 8-7 win. George Yousling (135) hung close with Bellingham’s Victor Harkness, and Beau Bridgman (152) and Kyle Knutson (171) did the same with Levi Brearley and Evan Parberry, respectively. None of the three lost by more than seven points.

The Tigers’ only win in the first nine matches came on Taylor Reijm’s come-from-behind overtime win at 130. Reijm trailed Taylor Perry 5-0 heading into the third period, but recorded three takedowns in the third, the last to tie the score at 7-7 just as the buzzer sounded. Reijm recorded the winning takedown midway through overtime.

The remaining Red Raiders were too strong, however.

Asa Harkness (125), Cameron Brearley (140) and Aaron Teich (145) all recorded pins, and freshman Reid Chivers (160) won by a dominating 18-9 major decision.

By the time the match got to the Tigers’ strength in the upper weights, it was 34-3 and already decided.

Jose De Los Rios (189) broke the string with a 9-4 victory for the Tigers.

Ryan Thomas (215) followed with a first-round pin and Michael Reyna won the heavyweight battle in the final second with a takedown.

The forfeit at 103 pounds pulled the Tigers as close as they would get, 34-21.

Bellingham’s Josh Knight (112) finished with a 53-second pin.

Anacortes upends Squalicum in dual meet
Seahawks strong at the end to edge Storm 39-34

BELLINGHAM — Needing victories in their final two matches, and without their top state finisher from a year ago, the Anacortes Seahawks nonetheless got the job done.

Behind Joel Kirkpatrick (145 pounds) and Kyle Tornga (152), the Seahawks topped Squalicum 39-34 Tuesday in Northwest 3A League wrestling action.

With Patrick Simpson sidelined by illness, Kirkpatrick dropped down from his normal 152-pound weight class and recorded a pin in the second round. Tornga followed with the clincher in the final match, also a second-round pin.

Brandon Brown (119) also recorded a second-round pin after dropping down a weight.

“They did a really good job,” Seahawks coach Bob Woods said. “Those were three key matches, and the kids worked hard to make the weight for us, then went out on the mat and got the job done.”

Ricky Sherin (189), Dave Evans (215) and Brian Bonner (275) all had first-round pins for the Seahawks (2-0 league). Luke Thomson opened the match with a 15-8 decision for Anacortes.
“We always stress that it’s a team effort,” Woods said. “You have to tighten your belt and make the best of the situation. Tonight it worked out.”

Sedro-Woolley Cubs 66
Ferndale Golden Eagles 16

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The top-ranked Cubs had 10 pins in the Northwest 3A League win despite moving several wrestlers up weights.

Troy Bellows (103), Derek Crouter (119), Kevin O’Neil (125), Cody Pohren (135), Patrick O’Neil (140), Randal Nersten (145), Jason Davis (152), Patrick Janicki (160), Jory Clark (171) and Justin Whitney (189) had the pins. The Cubs won the 112-pound match by forfeit.

The win was Sedro-Woolley’s 36th consecutive victory in league dual meets.

Stanwood Spartans 40
Arlington Eagles 29

STANWOOD — The Spartans used a few timely pins to pick up the win in the Western Conference 4A North Division meet.

Winning by pin were Luke Colson (125 pounds), Tyler Mann (215), Carter Mann (275) and Joey Durant (103).

Also winning for the Spartans were Keaton Hartzell (145), who won a decision 10-6; Jared Smith (160), who picked up a major decision at 19-11; Jake Allen (189), who won by forfeit; and Richard Bascom (112), who picked up a 6-5 decision.

Lake Steven Bulldogs 65
Mount Vernon Bulldogs 6

LAKE STEVENS — The Bulldogs picked up two wins in the Western Conference 4A North Division meet.

Landen Campbell picked up a 9-5 decision at 215 pounds and Daniel Osburn won an 8-4 decision at 275 pounds.

“We’re getting better,” Mount Vernon coach Rex Febus said. “We have a long way to go, but tonight we stepped up and wrestled without fear. We’re better than we were last week, and as long as we keep getting better, we’ll do fine
