COEUR d'ALENE -- Lakeland's Brandon Palaniuk and Chris Katus won quarterfinal
matches in convincing fashion Friday, advancing to today's semifinals at the
34th Tri-State wrestling tournament at North Idaho College.
For the Coeur d'Alene Vikings, this year's Tri-State will be chalked up to
experience as no Viking reached the quarterfinals.
Palaniuk, who pinned two of his three 135-pound opponents, will face top-seed
Levi Jones from Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., in today's semis, which
begin at 12:15 p.m. at Christianson Gym.
Jones won Tri-State at 112 pounds last year.
"If I can knock off the No. 1 seed in the semifinals, it will give me a lot of
momentum going into the final," Palaniuk said. "I'll go after him just like I do
everyone."
Katus, who lost in the quarterfinals last year and trailed 4-0 in his
second-round match before rallying for an 8-5 win, will take on No. 2 seed Kai
Vanlueven of Lake Stevens, Wash., in the semis.
"I think I have a good chance," Katus said.
"All of our guys wrestled to their potential today," said Lakeland coach Rob
Edelblute, who could only field half a team because of the Hawks' 34th-place
finish last year. "This is always a good tournament, especially for those kids
looking for an opportunity to shine. They all want to show what they can do."
Coeur d'Alene, which finished eighth in the team standings last year, was the
victim of a tough draw.
"We ran into some tough seeds early," Vikings assistant coach Kelly Moffat said.
"This tournament is so tough, when you get a draw like that, it makes it
difficult.
"We're young," he added, "but we wrestled hard."
With more than 50 teams entered in the event, the Idaho schools are at a bit of
a disadvantage, said Moffat, a former Tri-State champ as a junior for the
Vikings in 1987.
The Washington and Montana schools "start a couple weeks before we do," Moffat
said.
University sophomore Brian Owen, last year's champion at 103, advanced to the
119 semifinals despite a back injury that made him doubtful for the tournament.
"It's pretty tough to keep an Owen out of Tri-State," said University coach and
uncle Don Owen, who once coached the Vikings. "He's not even close to 100
percent ... he wants to be a four-timer."
That is, a four-time Tri-State winner, a feat accomplished only by Sandpoint's
Jared Lawrence from 1994-97.
"A lot of the time, even when he's not 100 percent, he's pretty tough to beat,"
Don Owen said.
The first day produced few upsets. Sandpoint's Sheldon Cramer, the No. 1 seed at
215, lost 8-6 to Pendleton's Justin Williams in the first round. Williams went
on to qualify for today's semifinals.
The only other top seed to lose Friday was Kamiakin's Jordon Anderson, who lost
11-9 to Scott Harris of North Central in the quarterfinals.
Ten of the 14 No. 2 seeds reached the semifinals.
The finals are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
