AUBURN -- It didn't take long Wednesday night for Auburn to show why it's the
favorite to win its second straight South Puget Sound League North Division
crown.
Led by the Big Four -- Matt Sencenbaugh (112 pounds), Tyler Roshau (152), Shane
Onufer (160) and Kurt Swartz (171) -- the Trojans made quick work of Sumner in a
season-opening North Division dual meet, 54-15.
Auburn finished last season at 7-1, tied atop the North standings with Enumclaw.
The win, however, didn't come without at least a little bit of a scare. Starting
at 140 pounds, the Spartans (0-1) pulled out victories in the night's first two
matches - the second a technical fall from 145-pounder Zack Grant - to take a
quick 8-0 lead.
Auburn then used the meat of its lineup - Roshau, Onufer and Swartz in
succession - to put an end to any upset ideas the Spartans may have had. All
three earned pins, Swartz taking home the quickest at one minute in the first
period.
Swartz won the 140-pound state crown a year ago while both Roshan and Onufer
(then at 145) each took second.
Sencenbaugh also got in on the action at 112, pinning Sumner's Tyler Wooding in
1:03. Sencenbaugh also took second at state a year ago, doing so at 103 pounds.
Auburn also tallied pins from Michael Pewitt (119) and from Kurt Swatz's young
brother, freshman Jake Swartz (135).

Instead, Mount Rainier's David Lepenska (140), Patrick Fleming (145) and Ricky
Dorward (152) all earned pins in a 51-30 win over the Totems. ... Kentlake got
to within 15-12 before Enumclaw's Kevin Shields (215), James Eide (275) and
Jason Gray (103) rattled off three straight pins en route to a 48-19 win over
the Falcons.

season as favorite to win SPSL North's 140-pound crown

COVINGTON -- Some how, some way, Shawn Larsen believes he's going to get over
the hump this season.
Kentwood's 140-pound senior wrestler has taken fifth at the state tournament in
each of the last two years. That's pretty impressive stuff for most high school
wrestlers, but Larsen is not satisfied.
``Absolutely I want to do better than I have the last two years,'' he said. ``My
goal is to be in the state finals.''
Larsen, who has had a passion for the sport since he was 4 years old, will begin
chasing that goal today when the Conquerors open the South Puget Sound League
North Division season with a dual meet against Auburn Mountainview.
A solid 5-foot-9, Larsen enters the season as the hands-down favorite to win the
league's 140-pound weight class. That's partly because he won't have to contend
with Auburn's Kurt Swartz, who competes this season at 171 pounds.
Larsen was upended by Swartz last season in the championship match at sub-regionals
(5-0), then again in the state finals (6-0) last season. Between a second-place
sub-regional finish and his fifth place at state, Larsen finished fourth at
regionals.
Now a year stronger, Larsen appears to be the class of the North at 140 pounds.
``Swartz was just in a zone last year,'' Kentwood coach Ken Sroka said.
``Shawn's a tough kid, a gamer. He's a big-match wrestler.
And?
``He's hungry,'' Sroka concluded.
There are several reasons for that. One, though he was mostly successful last
season, Larsen had hoped to do better. Two, Larsen often is overlooked in a
league stacked with state-title contenders. And, of course, he's hungry because
this is his final season.
``People, I believe, underestimate me because I took fifth,'' said Larsen, who
has a 63-22 career record. ``I think people thought I got lucky my sophomore
year.''
If Larsen got lucky his sophomore year, he was anything but at last year's Mat
Classic.
After losing to Swartz in the semifinals, Larsen suffered a heartbreaking defeat
to Lake Stevens' Brock Austin, 10-9, that cost him the chance to wrestle for
third place.
``I was beating the guy by two or three with 30 seconds left,'' Larsen said. ``I
took a shot, got in deep, but couldn't finish. He put me to my back, and I was
down by three.''
Trailing by one with only seconds remaining, Larsen turned Austin and was
certain that a two-point reversal - and the match - were his. Instead, points
were never awarded, and he settled for another fifth-place finish.
``He probably should've placed higher,'' Sroka conceded. ``He lost that match in
the last second to nobody's fault.''
That loss no doubt will serve as motivation this season.
``I conditioned well, practice hard, and I'll be ready,'' Larsen said.

to state. Last year, only the top four wrestlers in each weight class advanced
to state. ... Auburn's Roshau, who injured his right shoulder in last year's
state championship match, had offseason surgery on his labrum. Meanwhile, Boise
State-bound Swartz has moved up to 171, while teammate Onufer is at 160. ...
Despite its 0-8 league record a year ago, things are looking up at Kentridge,
which returns six starters. ... Kentlake also should move up because it
graduated just one wrestler from last season and returns Stokke (152), Andy Wray
(135) and Jared Walsh.
* Outlook: With a bevy of returners that placed top four at state a year ago,
Auburn could be unstoppable. The Trojans went 7-1 in league last season, tying
with Enumclaw for the North's top spot. Auburn should get a solid challenge from
Tahoma, which returns state champions Johnson (now at 160) and Kooyman (215).
But Enumclaw cannot be overlooked.
Seamount King
* Favorite: Mount Rainier.
* Contenders: Renton, Kennedy, Hazen.
* Notable: The King Division sent a league-high 31 wrestlers to last year's
state tournament. Of those, 27 were eliminated on the first day. ... Returning
state placers include: Renton's Chris Stone (eighth at 125); Kennedy's Travis
Bull (eighth at 130) and Mount Rainier's Kerry Bowser (eighth at 275). Of the
three, Bowser was the big surprise because he didn't wrestle varsity the entire
season. ... Former Tyee coach Dave Grieve has moved over to Hazen. Meanwhile,
former Tyee standout Joe Popich has taken over the Totems' program. Popich took
eighth at state at 171 pounds in 2001. ... Mount Rainier's Ricky Dorward, a
two-time Mat Classic qualifier, won a freestyle state title last summer. ...
Steve Peterson has taken over at Highline for Dave Stark, who retired at the end
of last season.
* Outlook: With four state qualifiers returning, Mount Rainier should challenge
for its second straight league crown. The Rams and Kennedy tied atop the King
Division a year ago. The Rams return 10 varsity wrestlers overall, but they can
expect a stiff challenge from Renton and Kennedy. The Indians should once again
dominate the lower to middle weights, where they're led by 130-pound state
placer Chris Stone.
CIRCLE ON THE CALENDAR
* Dec. 14, Tahoma at Auburn: Likely the best dual meet of the season. This one
will feature three state champs and three second-place finishers.
* Dec. 15, Tyee at Hazen: Former Tyee wrestler and first-year head coach Joe
Popich goes against Hazen's Dave Grieve, the former coach of the Totems.
* Jan. 12, Mount Rainier at Renton: This late-season meet between the King
Division favorites could decide the league championship.
* Jan. 18, Enumclaw at Tahoma: The third meeting of the Battle of the Bone. The
rival schools will go toe-to-toe for a three-foot cow femur mounted on a trophy
stand.
* Jan. 19, Auburn at Enumclaw: The Trojans ended the Hornets' 54-meet winning
streak a year ago, when the two finished tied atop the North.
