THE OLYMPIAN

Tumwater took three firsts and had two runners-up, helping the Thunderbirds win their own wrestling tournament Wednesday.

Tumwater's Chad Montermini (125), Tanner Weiks (140) and AJ Pulzcinski (275) all won their weight class, finishing the 13-team, one-day Tumwater Invitational with 3-0 records.

Tumwater, with its depth and quality, finished with 175.5 points. Auburn, with three firsts, took second with 164 points and Mariner was third with 147.

"Our whole team wrestled really solid," Tumwater coach Tony Prentice said. "It was a tough tournament. There were state placers in nearly every weight class."

Auburn's Shane Onufer was named the top wrestler of the tournament. In the 160-pound finals, Onufer, who was second in the state at 145 pounds last year, pinned Mountlake Terrace's Casey Butterfield in 5:19 and won all three of his matches.

Yelm's Mason May placed first at 130 pounds and teammate Ben Bradley was second at 140 pounds, leading the Tornados to fifth place with 132.5 points.

Black Hills dominated the lower weights and placed first in two of the three lightest weight classes to place sixth with 123 points.

It was an all-Black Hills final at 103 pounds. Black Hills' Jimmy Belleville defeated teammate Nick Burnham 17-4 to win the 103-pound class.

At 119 pounds, Black Hills' Dylan Justice defeated Camas' Eddie Russell 4-3 in the finals.

Auburn's Kurt Swartz, a state champ at 171 pounds last season, dominated his weight class at the Tumwater Invite, pinning Fife's James Hoffman in 2:10 of the finals.

At 140 pounds, Weiks and Yelm's Ben Bradley, who were both state placers last season, battled. Weiks, who finished third at state, defeated Bradley, an eighth-place finisher at state, 6-5 in the finals.

At 145 pounds, Rochester's Justin Eastman, a reigning 2A state champ who has lost only one high school match, defeated Mariner's Austin Kinter 10-4 in the Tumwater finals.

At the 275-pound finals, Pulzcinski defeated Mariner's Zak Rayzak 4-3. In another squeaker, Montermini defeated Zach Demers of Rochester 7-6 to win the 125-pound title.

After nearly 25 years of the tournament, Prentice said the Tumwater Invitational will change its name next year to the Pat Alexander Invitational.

Prentice presented Alexander, a former Tumwater wrestling coach who has been inducted into the state's coaching Hall of Fame, with an award and announced the name change.

Prentice said an annual $1,000 college scholarship will be presented to wrestlers at the tournament in Alexander's name.

"We're going to rename the invitational to honor Pat," Prentice said. "I pulled him in front of the crowd and made a speech."

Prentice said the tournament continues to thrive.

"We love that Auburn and the other 4A schools come down and wrestle," the Tumwater coach said. "Auburn is probably a top-three 4A school."
