ELMA — Despite combining to produce seven individual champions and 29 regional qualifiers, Grays Harbor wrestling teams saw the subregional 2A tournament team hardware head north on Saturday.

Forks, which had only eight wrestlers as recently as 2003, completed a remarkable turnaround by taking subregional team honors at Elma.

Winning three titles and earning 13 regional berths, the Spartans finished with 2261/2 points to finish 151/2 points ahead of runner-up Elma. Tenino was third with 2031/2, while defending champion Hoquiam settled for fourth with 1981/2.

Subregional champions Brandon Truini, Mac Watson and John Persell will lead a 12-man Elma contingent to regionals Saturday at Hoquiam Square Garden. The top four at each weight advanced to regionals.

“For the guys we had on the mat, I thought we wrestled pretty good,” said Elma coach Kevin Pine, whose team was battling some minor injuries. “Forks had a great tournament, that’s all there is to it.”

Hoquiam advanced 11 to regionals, including subregional champs Spenser Sharp, Gabe Chavez and Zack Bridgman.

The Grizzlies, who had ranked as slight pre-tournament favorites, were hampered by the loss of a couple of key performers. Brian Skolrood, seeded second at 125 points, left the team on Friday, while 112-pounder John Descher was unable to compete due a concussion.

“That’s about 30-35 points and that’s about the spread we lost by,” said Hoquiam coach Kirk Hartzell.

Montesano will send six wrestlers to regionals, including subregional titlist Cody Gueller.

Persell avenged a previous 13-1 loss by upending Montesano’s Carter Gueller (Cody’s younger brother) in the 171-pound title match. Gueller scored the match’s opening four points, but Persell rattled off the next 13 before pinning his opponent only five seconds into the third round.

Truini captured the 112-pound title with a hard-fought 7-4 decision over Forks’ Phillip Buchmann.

Watson received a default from teammate Russell Luellen when the two Eagles— both state veterans — advanced to the 152-pound final. That procedure would be reversed, according to Elma coaches, if they are scheduled to meet in the regional title match.

Hoquiam’s Sharp remained unbeaten against Washington wrestlers (his only loss this season was to an Idaho state champion in the Tri-State Championships in late December) by decisioning Tenino’s Josh Weyrauch, 14-7, in the 189-pound final.

The HHS senior spotted Weyrauch an early takedown, but dominated the remainder of the proceedings.

Chavez also trailed early in the 135-pound title match, before taking command and pinning Forks’ Zane Ross late in the second round.

Bridgman turned in the most unexpected victory of the title round.

Trailing Tenino’s Justin Hernandez 14-1 and on the verge of losing by technical fall, Bridgman suddenly turned Hernandez and pinned him with 18 seconds left in the second round of their 103-pound final.

Cody Gueller took charge early in the 160-pound title match and needed only 1:42 to pin Forks’ Brandon Robinson.

Five other Harborites lost in the title round.

Forks’ Marshall Petrovich decisioned Hoquiam’s Drew Gwinn, 14-1, in the 130-pound final. Tenino’s Stephen Smith blanked Hoquiam’s Brandon Butcher, 9-0, to win the 140-pound crown.

Rochester’s unbeaten Justin Eastman pinned Hoquiam’s Jackson Edens in 1:04 of the 145-pound title match, while Tenino’s Paul Swidecki pinned Elma’s top-seeded Troy Smith in 3:28 of the 215-pound final.

Elma 275-pounder Luke Romero suffered the most gut-wrenching loss of the title round.

Leading 3-2 after two rounds, Romero rode Forks’ David Hopkins for the bulk of the third stanza. But Hopkins was awarded a tying penalty point on a locking-hands violation with 16 seconds remaining, then wriggled free for the winning escape with four seconds left.

Elma’s Pine cited Josh Widener and Joey Millechek — the latter primarily a junior varsity performer this season — for qualifying for regionals.

Forks 2261/2, Elma 211, Tenino 2031/2, Hoquiam 1981/2, Montesano 112, Rochester 53
