Lester Brown
Thread

Today at lunch I took a few
minutes to cruise the message board and read further on the Lester
Brown thread. I have since removed that thread. I had originally left
the thread up as the information was public already because charges
had been pressed. I also talked to people “close to the situation” and
we decided to leave the thread up as it is an issue that Lester will
need to deal with. I really thought the thread would just go away but
it just keeps being brought back to the top by numerous posters, some
for, some against. At this point, everyone that reads the message
board regularly is aware of what has taken place and now we should
just let it go away, until something definitive has been determined.
I’m asking that no more post be made on this matter unless there is
additional, “public news” that should be shared with the rest of the
message board viewers.
It is apparent that there has been some trouble develop but let’s wait
and see what is actually determined in court, before making a
judgment. I know of a case recently in which a coach was publicly
charged with certain actions and his reputation was widely smeared.
When the case actually came to trial, the case was ultimately
dismissed. Unfortunately for this gentleman, newspapers love to
publicize charges but if those charges are ultimately dismissed, they
do not give the same amount of press to clear an individual’s name.
As far as some people saying this reflects on the Lake Stevens
coaches or program, I totally disagree. I’ve known Brent Barnes for 10
years and my son has trained under his tutelage in freestyle since
2002. I’ve been in the room when Brent has told stories to the young
wrestlers about former wrestlers of his that made wrong choices and
how important was to be a good student and be a good person. I know
the other coaches out there are also standup guys. I wouldn’t let my
son in the room if it weren’t. I know “ good parents” that have kids
go astray. I know “bad parents” that have great kids in spite of them.
Everyone in life makes choices, and they have to live with those
choices and the consequences.
I’m sure that with a program such as Brent and his crew have
developed over the years there is a requirement for them in having to
deal with all kinds of issues among their wrestlers, parents, other
coaches, school administrators, etc. With the hundreds of wrestlers
that have been through the program, why would it be surprising that a
small percentage of them have some difficulties once they get out of
high school. Is the percentage any different than the rest of the
school population, or your/our school’s population? I’ve seen
wrestlers go to jail in the past and I certainly didn’t blame it on
their coach. Some lessons in life are just painful. If we can learn
from someone else’s mistakes, it makes it a lot easier. In Lester’s
case, let’s wait to hear the next factual development before posting
further information.
