BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State University wrestling team can now set their
sights on No. 1 ranked University of Iowa after the Broncos sweep NAIA powers
Montana State University-Northern and the University of Great Falls on Friday
(Feb. 8).
In a double-dual match held at Bronco Gym, Boise State handed MSU-Northern a
38-8 defeat, before posting a 26-12 win over Great Falls 26-12. MSU-Northern is
ranked sixth in the latest NAIA poll, while Great Falls is No. 2.
The victories improve Boise State’s dual match record of 10-1 as the Broncos now
prepare for their Sunday (Feb. 10) match against the top ranked Hawkeyes. The
match begins at Noon (MT) in Taco Bell Arena.
Boise State had little trouble with MSU-Northern losing only two matches. Pins
by Cory Fish and Johnny Nunez led the Broncos to victory. Fish pinned Beau
LaSalle at the 1:50 mark of his 133 pound match, while it took Nunez just 37
seconds to pin Austin Ouellette at 165 pounds.
Matt Casperson added a technical fall win (17-0) over Colter Dimas at 197 pounds
to help propel the Broncos to victory over MSU-Northern.
In the Great Falls match, the visiting Argos won three of the first four matches
to gain a 12-4 lead before Tyler Sherfey set the tone for the rest of the night
for the Broncos.
Sherfey faced Wayne French, who is ranked No. 1 in the NAIA and who had handed
Sherfey a 4-3 defeat back in November at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyoming.
The two battle to a 4-4 tie through the first four minutes of the match before
Sherfey scored three straight points on his way to a 14-6 major decision.
Following three straight decisions by Bronco wrestlers by Kurt Swartz (165
pounds), Nate Lee (174) and Kirk Smith (184), Casperson clinch the win for Boise
State when he pinned Alex Calvi at the 2:21 mark of the 197 pound match.
Sunday’s match against Iowa will mark the first time in Bronco wrestling history
the No. 1 team in the country will visit Boise. The Hawkeyes are 16-1 in duals
this year, prior to its match at Arizona State University on Friday (Feb. 8).
Iowa’s only loss this year is to Oklahoma State University, 19-14, back on
January 1.
Iowa has a wrestler listed in every weight class except 197 pounds in this
week’s InterMat/NWCA/NWMA rankings. Two are No. 1 – Brent Metcalf at 149 pounds
