BOISE, Idaho – The No. 1 ranked University of Iowa was just too much for the Boise State University wrestling team Sunday (Feb. 10) afternoon as the Hawkeyes handed the Broncos a 30-9 defeat before 2,812 fans at Taco Bell Arena.

Boise State’s loss snapped a nine-match winning streak as the Broncos fall to 10-2 in duals this season. Iowa improved to 18-1. The appearance by the Hawkeyes marked the first time in Bronco wrestling history the No. 1 team in the country made a trip to the Boise State campus.

Starting the dual at the 125-pound weight class, Iowa jumped out to an 18-0 team lead through the first four matches winning one by fall, one by a technical fall and one by major decision.

Tyler Sherfey, ranked No. 12 in this week’s InterMat/NWCA/NWMA poll, hoped to gain the first team points for Boise State in the 157-pound weight class when he faced 15th ranked Ryan Morningstar. The two wrestlers battled to a 1-1 tie through three regulation periods forcing the match to overtime. Neither wrestler was able to score in the first three overtime periods, and with just four seconds remaining in the fourth extra period, Morningstar was able to score a two-point takedown for a 3-1 victory.

Kurt Swartz finally put Boise State on the scoreboard in the next match at 165 pounds when the 16th ranked wrestler posted a 2-1 decision over Jake Kerr.

Broncos Nate Lee and Kirk Smith each fought hard to gain victories in the next two matches, but came up just short each time.

Facing the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the country at 174 pounds in Jay Borschel, Lee held a 4-3 lead after two periods before the Iowa wrestler was able to score three points in the final period, plus one-point advantage time, for a 7-4 win.

Entering the 184-pound match with a record of 22-1, Smith faced the only wrestler who had defeated the true freshman this year – seventh ranked Phillip Keddy. Much like their previous match back in November when Keddy posted a 5-2 win, this was another close battle. Following a scoreless first period, Keddy went up 3-0 on an escape and takedown, before Smith battled back with two one-point escapes. Smith came close to taking the lead in the final period, but was unable to come up with the much needed two-point takedown in a 3-2 loss.

Matt Casperson produced the loudest response from the Bronco crowd in winning his match at 197 pounds. Facing Rick Loera, Casperson was able to take down the Iowa wrestler late in the first period and pin him at the 2:35 mark for six team points.

In the final match of the day, seventh ranked Matt Fields posted an 8-3 win over Nick Smith.

The Broncos now take a three-week break from competition to prepare for the Pac-10 Conference Championships, March 2 and 3 (Sunday and Monday) at the University of Oregon.
