BOISE, Idaho Boise State University had no problem in winning its seventh
straight wrestling dual when it blanked Portland State University, 43-0, in
Pac-10 Conference action on Friday (Feb. 1) at Bronco Gym.
The Broncos improve to 8-1 overall this year, and 7-1 in Pac-10 duals. Portland
State falls to 1-9 and 0-7 in league matches.
A pin from Kirk Smith, and technical falls from Tyler Sherfey and Johnny Nunez
led the Bronco effort.
Smith, ranked ninth nationally at 184 pounds, recorded a fall over Jacob Antoine
at the 2:31 mark of the match. The victory improves the true freshmans overall
record for the season to 20-1.
Ranked 12th in the 157-pound weight class, Sherfey notched his 22nd win of the
season with a 15-0 technical fall over Brady Garner.
Nunez, who replaced nationally ranked (No. 16) Kurt Swartz in the lineup at 165
pounds, did not disappoint Bronco fans as he handed Jordan Toney an 18-3
technical fall loss.
The rest of the Bronco wins were decisions, with the exception of the 125 and
133 pound weight classes when Portland State was unable to produce an opponent
and Boise State was awarded forfeits.
Boise State is back in action a week from tonight when the Broncos host a double
