BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State University wrestling team fought back from an
early deficit to win the final six matches and post a 24-13 victory over Oregon
State University in Pac-10 Conference action Sunday (Jan. 27) afternoon.
Trailing 13-3 after four matches, the Broncos started their winning streak of
individual victories at the 157-pound weight class. Tyler Sherfey, ranked 12th
in this week’s Intermat/NWCA/NWMA poll, pinned Dan Brascetta at the 2:49 mark of
the match for six team points.
No. 17 ranked Kurt Swartz cut the Beaver lead to just one point when he recorded
a 10-3 decision over Keegan Davis at 165 pounds, before Boise State gained the
lead for good as Nate Lee won his174-pound match over Chris Platt, 11-6, for a
15-13 Bronco lead.
The Broncos rounded out the match with three more wins by decision from Kirk
Smith, Matt Casperson and Nick Smith. Ranked No. 9 at 184 pounds, Kirk Smith
recorded a 12-6 win over Kyle Bressler, before Casperson earned a 4-2 decision
over Brice Arand at 197 pounds and Nick Smith an 8-3 win at heavyweight.
Casperson’s match was the most exciting of the day as the sophomore from St.
George, Utah took Arand down just 20 seconds into the overtime period for a 4-2
victory.
Boise State’s other individual win came at 133 pounds when Cory Fish handed
Clifton Ivanoff a 7-1 defeat.
The victory improves Boise State’s overall record to 7-1 and 6-1 in the Pac-10.
Oregon State falls to 7-6 and 4-3 in the league.
Next on the Bronco schedule is the team’s final Pac-10 dual of the 2007-08
season on Friday (Feb. 1) at home against Portland State. The match begins at
7:00 p.m. in Bronco Gym.

BOISE, Idaho – Winning nine of 10 matches, Boise State
University recorded another convincing Pac-10 Conference wrestling
victory on Friday (Jan. 25) with a 34-3 win over the University of
Oregon.
After dropping the first match of the night in the 125-pound
weight class, the Broncos won the remaining matches to improve its
overall record for the 2007-08 season to 6-1, and 5-1 in the Pac-10.
Oregon drops to 9-8 and 0-5 in the league.
Ranked No. 12 in this week’s Intermat/NWCA/NWMA poll at 157
pounds, Tyler Sherfey led the Broncos as the junior from Kennewick,
Wash., recorded the only major decision win of the night with a 15-2
victory over Kyle Bounds.
With the exception of being awarded two forfeits at 141 and
184 pounds when Oregon was unable to present a wrestler in those two
weight classes, the rest of Boise State’s win came by decision.
Those wins came from Cory Fish at 133 pounds, Eli Hutchison
at 149 pounds, No. 17 Kurt Swartz at 165 pounds, Nate Lee at 174 pounds,
Matt Casperson at 197 pounds and Nick Smith in the heavyweight class.
The Broncos will be back in action this Sunday (Jan. 27) at
1:00 p.m. in Bronco Gym when they host Oregon State University in
another Pac-10 dual.
