Lakeside tops Kelso for Invite title
Sunday, January 13, 2008 8:32 AM PST
Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, a Class 1A wrestling team,
won the fourth annual Kelso Invitational on Saturday with 179 points, leaving
the hosts in second place with 151.5.
Rounding out the top-notch field were Black Hills (147), a short-handed Auburn
lineup (141), Eastmont (128), Bellingham (106), Mountain View (96), R.A. Long
(70) and Franklin Pierce (53).
"I'm really happy with the turnout we're getting, the teams wanting to come over
and participate," Kelso coach Bob Freund said. "We had a lot of talent in the
finals. We had a couple of matches were state champions went against state
champions, some all-Americans in there, two Tri-State champions.
"Lakeside, they're a 1A school, but they were third at Tri-State this year, half
a point behind Lake Stevens. As far as depth goes, they could be the No. 2 team
in the state overall," Freund added. "I kind of expected them to win the
tournament."
Lakeside wrestled Kelso in an intense dual on Friday, which the Eagles won
39-26. The Hilanders began struggling soon after returning to the mat for the
tournament, lagging in fifth place after the tourney's opening round.
Kelso's only champion was freshman Riley Miller. He escaped the first-round
doldrums thanks to a bye at 103 pounds, then pinned his first opponent within
two minutes and scored a 6-0 shutout in the finals. R.A. Long's Josh Johnson was
third at 103.
"Riley's just very coachable," Freund said. "He listens to everything you have
to say. He works his tail off every day in that room. He keeps improving on
little positional things all the time. That's what it's going to take if he
wants to win a state title, which I know he does."
Kelso's 112-pounders had a tough weekend, thanks to the presence of Lakeside's
Ryan Norstadt. Norstadt beat Tyson Connors on Friday in the dual, then dropped
Garrett McDaniel into the losers' bracket the next day.
In the finals, he stuck Connors in the first round. McDaniel stayed alive to
give Kelso a two-three finish.
"I thought Tyson at 112 did a great job wrestling the Auburn kid in the
semifinals," Freund said. "That's a kid who beat him earlier this year. This
time Tyson controlled the whole match."
At 125, Kelso's Mitch Giberson slipped up in his first match. He went to his
back, gave up five points, and could not quite get it all back in time to stop
an 8-7 loss. He wrestled strong the rest of the day, taking third with two
first-round pins and a 9-0 major decision.
Kurtis Giberson, bumped up a weight to 130, lost a one-point lead in the second
round of the finals, eventually losing 6-3. Anthony Hughes (135) also ran into a
tough Lakeside wrestler in the finals. Kyle Johnson, third in state last year,
pinned his way through the bracket and dropped Hughes to second place.
"Kyle Johnson is the best kid in the state at 135 right now, in my opinion, so
it's not like he lost to just anybody," Freund said.
Kelso's Tayler Mustion, formerly a struggling 171-pounder, has a 5-1 record
after dropping to 160, including a third-place finish Saturday. Skyler Ackerly
of R.A. Long had a good day at 171, losing only to the eventual champion and
dealing out two first-round pins on his way to third.
Hilander Jordan Jackson (285) got some revenge in his match for third, pinning a
Lakeside competitor who had beaten him Friday.
Kelso had fourth places from Jason Baker (119), Jordan Reimer (130), Jesse
Mueller (135) and Justin Sitch (140), and a fifth from Justin O'Neil (215). The
Lumberjacks got fifths from Brandon Mathews (145), Kaleb Ross (189) and Drew
Brock (285).
