Schmidtke wins a Beast back East

NEWARK, Del. - Top seeded at one of the toughest high-school national tournaments in the country, Aberdeen’s Erich Schmidtke made it stand up on Sunday.

Schmidtke, a two-time Washington state champion, can add the Beast of the East wrestling tournament title to his already stacked resume after winning three matches to win the 189-pound division at the University of Delaware.

Today, Schmidtke returns to Washington to meet up with his Aberdeen teammates for this week’s Reno Tournament of Champions.

“This was a survival-of-the fittest-type of tournament,” AHS head coach Randy Connelly said. “Erich definitely had to scratch and claw his way through. One lesson he learned about the wrestlers here is that they know how to keep a match close in order to give them a chance to win at the end. All of the matches, except his first one, were all very close. Every round got progressively tougher.”

In the 189 championship, Schmidtke took on New Jersey state champion Mac Mancuso of Holy Spirit High School in Abescon, N.J. Schmidtke was in control, but Mancuso matched the Bobcat in speed and used the out of bounds to his advantage.

With Schmidtke getting a hold of him, Mancuso would slide his way out of bounds before he could score any points. Connelly said that the match officials got tired of it at the end and awarded Schmidtke a penalty point late for a 3-2 victory.

“The kid was very cagey and very quick,” Connelly added.

Schmidtke needed overtime in the semifinals to earn a championship match berth, taking down Max Huntley of Colonial Forge High School in Stafford, Va., for a 10-8 victory. Huntley tied up the match with five seconds remaining to force overtime.

In the quarterfinals, Schmidtke defeated Zach Benzio, of Connellsville, Penn., 7-4.

“Erich made some mistakes in the semifinals, but what is amazing about him is that he’ll do what it takes to get his hand raised at the end of the match,” Connelly said. “This was a fun tournament, one that introduced him to the level of competition he’ll face at Oklahoma.”

Outcome disputed in HHS-Kelso meet

Kelsey Klein, Dallas Wagner, and Marissa Aube each scored pins for Hoquiam but the Grizzlies fell to Kelso, 31-27, in a girls wrestling dual meet Wednesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

The outcome is in dispute. Hoquiam coaches believe the Grizzlies won, 33-31, but that included an exhibition result. To compound the confusion, the Hilanders had only six wrestlers, resulting in some girls wrestling twice to complete the meet.

"Our girls wrestled hard; we knew going in that Kelso would make it a tough match," said Hoquiam coach Isa Neilsen.

Klein and Wagner each had first-round pins. Alyssa Lee and Lexi Taylor scored decision wins for Hoquiam.

In an exhibition match, Hoquiam's Alex White pinned Aberdeen's Kelsie Lyles.

The Grizzlies travel to Moses Lake for a tournament Friday.

FIFE - Kelsey Sund and Kylie Wilson each won two matches as Hoquiam dominated host Fife, 57-6, in a girls wrestling dual meet on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies won nine of the 10 matches contested officially, eight of them by pin.

"The girls wrestled really strong, it was impressive," HHS assistant coach Wes Cormier said.

"We expected to wrestle hard and they did it."

At 112 pounds, Sund pinned Alina Ginchak and Amber Augustino for her two wins, while Wilson won her two matches by pins early in the first period each.

Marissa Aube, Katrina Johnson and Alicia Garcia were credited with wins by pin in their exhibition matches.

Today, Hoquiam will host Kelso in a girls dual meet at 6 p.m.
