South Kitsap Invite   1/20/07

By George Edgar, for the Kitsap Sun
January 21, 2007

PORT ORCHARD

Olympic wrestling coach Bobby Manglona looked to the left and the right, and
liked what he saw.

On one mat was Trojan senior Mick Polillo, dominating Franklin Kline of
Olympia in the 130-pound final of the South Kitsap Invitational. On the
other mat, junior Ivan Gaeta was emerging victorious in the 160-pound final
over Kentlake's Bucky Snider.

An Olympic wrestler was in a final just about everywhere fans looked on
Saturday. The Trojans put eight wrestlers in the finals and came away with
four individual titles en route to the team championship of the tournament.

Olympic dominated in points, piling up 233 and sewing up the team title
before the finals. Kentlake was second with 194, followed by host South
Kitsap. Peninsula, last year's team champion, was fourth with 149.

Individual finals were contested on two mats, allowing Olympic fans to see
Polillo and Gaeta win their matches simultaneously.

Polillo shut out Kline 9-0 in the 130-pound final, and Gaeta won a 10-7
decision over Snyder at 160 that went back and forth.

Manglona said that Polillo is "a smart wrestler. He got it from his father
(an Olympic assistant coach). He got in good position to wrestle the kid.
He's a fighter."

As for Gaeta, Manglona said "Ivan has great technique. He got the takedown,
and really scrapped his way through. It was a good see-saw match."

Junior Camie Yeik won the 103-pound title for the second year in a row over
South's Kurtis Fenton, scoring a takedown in overtime to win 7-5. She came
back from a 5-3 deficit in the match to force the extra period, then
countered a takedown attempt by Fenton to score the winning points. Last
year, Yeik defeated Fenton 4-3 for the title.

"I'm glad to see her do that," Manglona said. "People think she stalls a
lot. But she believes in her moves; she went for that move in overtime and
won."

Ken Nelson won the fourth title for Olympic, defeating Adam Ferguson of
South 14-9.

Caleb Williams and Laurice Gerig came away with second-place finishes for
Olympic after each was hurt in their semifinal matches. Williams injured his
back when Peninsula's Kyle Coonan slammed him to the mat in their 152-pound
semifinal. Coonan was disqualified and Williams advanced to the final, where
he defaulted to Trevor Rice of Evergreen of Vancouver.

Gerig strained his lower back in winning a 189-pound semifinal and defaulted
in the final to Kentlake's Jared Walsh. Manglona expects both of them to be
healthy for the Trojans' dual meet with Peninsula on Thursday.

Jeremy Huffman (112) and Kevin Siperek (285) also placed second at the
tournament for Oly.

The host Wolves' only title came at 125 pounds, where junior Craig Bell
defeated Kentlake's Austin Carrillo 6-5.

"I saw from him a lot of guts and determination," SK coach Chad Nass said of
Bell. "From the first to the last, he did it."

South Kitsap will try to extend their Narrows League dual meet winning
streak when they face off against North Kitsap on Thursday. The Wolves'
winning streak is at 140 matches.
