Projected College Weight: 165
Background: My number one pick is a one-time 4A state champ
with a runner-up finish as a sophomore and a third-place finish as a freshman.
Trevor wrestles for Battle Ground high school in Battle Ground Washington and
also has trained extensively at the Peninsula Wrestling Club across the
river in Portland, Oregon. He has been one of Washington's premier wrestlers
since winning his first of five state freestyle titles back in 1998. Hall has
also wrestled well at the national level placing second at several USA Wrestling
Nationals capped off by a first place in Junior Greco Roman Nationals in 2006.
He also backed up the Greco-Roman tile with a seventh place finish in freestyle.
Trevor is not only skilled, but is extremely tough-minded. He will not only make
it to the next level, he will have a high level of success there.
Committed to
Oregon.
Kelly Kubec - Lake Stevens
Projected College Weight: 125/133
Background: Kelly is a two-time 4A state champ which came after
placing third in state as a freshman. He too has been at the top of Washington
wrestlers since the mid-90s and won a total of six state freestyle titles in the
kids wrestling division. He was also a six-time winner of kids Western regionals
in the Greco-Roman division. In national competition he won a Novice and a
Schoolboy national title as well as a Cadet Greco-Roman national title in 2004.
In 2004 he also took third in Cadet freestyle nationals and then in 2006 he
placed second in Junior Greco Roman nationals as well as placing fourth in the
Junior national freestyle division. Kelly also was a member of the Washington
State Cadet and Junior duel teams which competed at nationals. Kelly made a big
jump going from 112 to 130 between his sophomore and junior year but had the
physical development necessary to do this and knocked off a number of highly
rated 135'er in the state, including the 3A and 4A state champions. His
wrestling resume speaks for itself and his leadership qualities are high level.
Committed to
Oregon State
Andrew Johnson - Tahoma
Projected College Weight: 157
Background: Andrew is another two-time 4A state champion who
won titles both years that he was eligible. He competes for a three-year high school so he did not have a chance to
win a medal/title as a freshman. He had an undefeated sophomore year although he
did lose two matches as a junior. One of those matches was to the NHSCA Senior
Nationals champion (Adam hall) and the other loss was to the 3A state champion
(Derek Driscoll) in which he lost the lead on a last-second throw by Driscoll.
Andrew does not have a lot of national freestyle credentials to list although he
was very successful competing on the local freestyle circuit. Andrew has an
aggressive, constant attack style and is extremely exciting to watch. He wears
his opponents down as the match progresses and he seems to have a bottomless gas
tank. He is the younger brother of three-time state finalist Michael Johnson who
only lost twice over his three-year high school career.
Where he's looking: Open
Shane Onufer - Auburn
Projected College Weight: 165/174
Background: Shane won his first state high school title in 2006
on the heels of placing fourth as a freshman and second as a sophomore. His only
losses as a sophomore were to Andrew Johnson and that occurred several times
over the season as they competed in the same high school league. He also
competed in Cadet freestyle nationals at Fargo in 2005 and placed third at 152.
He did not compete at Fargo as a junior. He has become very strong to compliment
his great skills. He is very popular with his teammates and is the type of
person you want in your room. He is very skilled in all styles and his best
wrestling may be ahead of him.
Where he's looking: Open
Derek Driscoll - WF West High School in Chehalis
Projected College Weight: 157/165
Background: Derek is an extremely powerful wrestler who won his
first title as a junior. As a freshman he took third place in the weight class
that was won by Brandon Sitch. He had a great sophomore year going but was
injured and he was unable to compete in the postseason tournaments. Derek has
not wrestled extensively on the national circuit but he is competed well against
national level wrestlers from the northwest. His biggest match of the year was
at the Pacific Coast championships when he wrestled Andrew Johnson in the
finals. Johnson was handling the match, and was ahead 8-4 and pressing the
action. Driscoll threw a strong head and arm and scored five points in the last
10 seconds of the match to win by one.
Where he's looking: Open
Michael Lomsdalen - Sedro Woolley
Projected College Weight: 157/165
Background: Michael wrestles for the powerful Sedro Woolley
program which has won five 3A state titles in a row. He started out with the
Sedro Woolley wrestling club as a young wrestler and then moved on to the USA
Everett program when it was coached by Ron Bessemer. Michael did not win any
state freestyle titles as a youth wrestler but was always in the hunt and his
skill set continued to improve. His breakout year was as a freshman in high
school when he made a surprise run to the state finals where he finished second.
The next two years were all Michael as he won state titles in a controlling
fashion. Although Michael competes in freestyle and Greco-Roman, he seems to be
more suited to the collegiate style of wrestling. This year Michael plans on
becoming Sedro Woolley's second three-time state champion.
Where he's looking: Open
Andrew Buck - Kelso
Projected College Weight: 174/184
Background: Andrew is another product of the Peninsula
wrestling club out of Portland, Oregon and has placed twice as state, fourth as
a sophomore and second as a junior. As a sophomore he gave three-time state
champ Mike Sewell a very hard time before losing to him in overtime. He followed
that up with a tremendous tournament in Fargo were he placed first and second in
Cadet nationals. As a junior he made it to the state finals but lost to Kurt
Swartz who was one of my top rated seniors last year. Unfortunately, Andrew had an
injury at the Olympic training center last spring and re-injured it during his
first match at Fargo this past year. Andrew has moved to Kelso high school for
his senior year.
Where he's looking: Open
Justin Eastman - Rochester
Projected College Weight: 149/157
Background: Eastman is a little bit of an unknown in this group
and because he only wrestles collegiate during the winter season and he competes
in the smaller divisions of the state high school tournament. I've never seen
him compete at local, state or national freestyle events. Nevertheless, he has
been successful in kids folkstyle wrestling for a number of years including wins
at large Tulsa and Reno tournaments. As a freshman he took third in state in the
2A division losing to the defending state champ in the semifinals by one point.
As a sophomore he was dominant in winning the title and was dominating through
his junior year. In the finals this year he was well on his way to winning a
title however, he made a mistake with a 10 point lead and was put to his back
where he was pinned. I think Justin is an extremely accomplished wrestler and
would love to see him compete in some of the larger tournaments against other
high-level wrestlers.
Where he's looking: Open
Dallas Hintz - Ephrata
Projected College Weight: 141/149
Background: Another somewhat unknown wrestler who has really
come on over the past year. Dallas competes for a small school in eastern
Washington and he placed second as a freshman and took fifth as a sophomore in
the 2A state tournament. As a junior he was very sick at regionals and took the
last qualifying spot to get to state. At state he knocked off a two-time
defending state champion and made it all the way into the finals were he
narrowly lost. He also competed well in the freestyle and Greco Roman circuit
this spring and placed in Las Vegas at the Junior Western regional.
Where he's looking: Open
Anthony Varnell - Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane
Projected College Weight: 149
Background: Another wrestler on the list who does not have a
state title but nonetheless is a very accomplished wrestler. As a sophomore he
lost in the first round at state to a three-time state Placer. After that tough
loss he came back through a very tough consolation bracket to defeat the same
wrestler for third place that had defeated him in the first round. As a junior
he lost an overtime match to the eventual state champion in the quarterfinals
and came back to take fourth place overall.
Where he's looking: Open
Derek Crouter - Sedro Woolley
Projected College Weight: 125
Background: Derek is another member of the Sedro Woolley team
who has won two titles in the lowest two weight groups of the 3A division. He
won the last two titles at 103 and 112 and he placed third as a freshman. He has
been wrestling for a long time and competed successfully as a youth wrestler
although he has not competed much at regional or national level tournaments.
Where he's looking: Open
Tony Farrington - Orting
Projected College Weight: 125/133
Background: A two-time state champion in the 2A division,
winning at 119 as a junior. He is on course to be three-time state champ and a
four-time state placer. Tony is a very accomplished wrestler and I have watched
him for years. The reason I don't have him ranked higher is that he he wrestles
in the smaller division and I have not seen him compete against high level of
wrestlers the past few years. He definitely has talent but I wish we had a
chance to see more of it to get a better picture.
Where he's looking: Open
Chase Smith - Enumclaw
Projected College Weight: 125/133
Background: A wrestler with no state title but several near
misses. He did not place as a freshman however, as a sophomore he lost 1-0 to
the eventual state champ and then came back to take third place. As a junior he
lost in the state finals to Anthony Hayes who will be wrestling at Oklahoma next
year. He has not done a lot of freestyle over the years but he did go back to
Fargo as a Cadet and placed.
