BOISE, Idaho – The
Boise State
wrestling team earned its first Pac-10 Conference win of the season,
Friday night, with a 25-13 victory against the
Oregon State Beavers
in Bronco Gymnasium. Boise State won seven matches on the night,
improving its overall record to 7-1, 1-0 in Pac-10 competition.
The Broncos managed to
rebound against the Beavers despite dropping the first two matches of
the night. At 197-pounds, Boise State freshmanJacob Neumann
lost his first ever collegiate match in a 13-4 major decision against
Chad Hanke. Then, in the Heavyweight match,
Sam Zylstra
fell to Oregon State ’s Clayton Jack, 17-2
technical fall, which gave Oregon State and early 9-0
lead.
Alan Bartelli
gave the Broncos their first win of the night in the 125-pound match,
wrestling Jake Gonzales to a 3-1 decision. After a scoreless first
period, Bartelli scored a one point escape in the second to take a 1-0
lead heading into the third. Bartelli sealed the win with 1:01 left in
the match with a two-point take down.
In the 133-pound match
Boise State sophomoreAndrew Hochstrasser
managed to keep his dual record perfect for the season (8-0) with an
11-2 major decision against Kelly Kubec. Hochstrasser jumped out to a
big lead early, scoring six points in the first period. The win narrowed
the gap for Boise State , trailing 7-9 going into the 141-pound match.
At 141-pounds
Eli Hutchison
gave the Broncos their first lead of the night, 11-9, after a 12-4
decision over Ryan Harold. Hutchison used an eight-point
third period to blow the match wide open, scoring six
points on take downs in the final period.
The Boise State lead
wouldn’t last long, however, with
Oregon State overtaking
Boise State again after Heinrich Barnes defeated Boise
State ’s
Jason Chamberlain
at 149-pounds. Barnes’ 12-4 major decision gave the Beavers’ their final
lead of the night, 13-11.
In the 157-pound match
Adam Hall
overpowered Oregon State ’s Anthony Peressini, 20-5, behind a
seven-point second period for Hall. In the match, Hall scored on seven
take downs, giving Boise State a 16-13 lead and helping to improve his
dual record this season to 6-1.
Senior
Tyler Sherfey
overcame two scoreless periods against Oregon State ’s Keegan Davis in
the 165-pound match, en route to a 2-1 decision. Sherfey scored the
matches first point with a one-point escape at the 1:50 mark in the
third. Despite being penalized one-point for stalling with 00:30 on the
clock, Sherfey scored an advantage point in the end to give Boise State
a 19-13 lead.
Kurt Swartz
sealed the deal for the Broncos, however, with a 5-3 overtime win
against Ben Harris at 174-pounds. After wrestling to a 3-3 tie at the
end of regulation, Swartz scored a two-point take down with 00:11 to go
in the first OT, extending Boise State ’s lead to 22-13.
In the final match of
the night, 184-pounds,
Kirk Smith
fended off Oregon State ’s Kyle Bressler, 4-1, in the most anticipated
match of the night. Smith entered Friday night ranked No. 4 in the USA
Today/InterMat/NWCA individual rankings, while Bressler was ranked No.
8. After taking an early two point lead in the first period, Smith score
a one point escape in the second and scored the advantage point to hold
off Bressler and give Boise State the 25-13 win.
The Broncos now return
to the road, traveling to Reno , Nev. next weekend for the Reno
Tournament of Champions on Dec. 18. The Broncos are on the road until
Jan. 18 when Boise State will host Cal State-Bakersfield, which is the
first of five consecutive Pac-10 home duals for the Broncos.

Just thought I'd
give a report on the Washington wrestlers that competed tonight for
Boise State
125 - Brian Owen wrestled an exhibition match and won 3-2 I believe.
Pretty close match - he looks huge for 125.
141 - Cory Fish had a good match against Jeff Newby. Cory looks great at
141 and should have a really good year. He won by 5 points I think.
157 - Brad Muri wrestled in place of Adam Hall and looked very solid.
Dominated his opponent. He looked pretty wiped out in the 3rd period but
still managed to get a reversal and takedown.
165 - Tyler Sherfey looked great and won his match handily.
174 - Kurt Swartz normally wrestled 165 but was wrestling at 174 in
place of injured Nate Lee. He probably had to weigh in at 165 to keep
his certification and looked quite a bit smaller than his opponent. The
UVU kid was very tough but Kurt managed a 1 point win. Very gutsy
performance for Kurt.
HWT - I don't think UVU has a heavyweight, so they put up what looked
like a 184 pounder against big Sam Zylstra from BSU. Nothing happened in
the first period, then Sam squished the guy in the 2nd for the pin.
BSU looked great. Jason Chamberlain from Utah came out of redshirt and
wrestled at 149 - looks pretty tough. Kirk Smith from Idaho put on a
takedown clinic against his opponent.
Utah Valley University has a good team and they're only going to get
better. They have good coaching and a solid program.
11/9/08 Update

Next up for the Broncos: Cowboy Open in Laramie, WY on Nov 15th (all
day). Then, on Nov 22nd, Coach Owens and Randall will travel with half
of the team back east to the Body Bar Invitational, while coach White
and Amador will take the other half to the Best of the West tournament
in Medford, OR.

BRONCO WRESTLING FILLS W.I.N. PRESEASON RANKINGS

BOISE, Idaho - Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.)
announced its NCAA Division I wrestling preseason rankings this week and
Boise State University is represented almost across the board. The
Broncos were picked No. 13 as a team in dual rankings, while defending
champion the University of Iowa took top honors.
W.I.N. also released a tournament power index, which ranks teams
according to how each school’s currently ranked wrestlers would finish
at the NCAA National Tournament in March of 2009. Boise State finished
10th with 34.5 points. Iowa ranked the highest with 91 points.
The preseason poll also has nine Boise State wrestlers ranked in the
nation’s top 20 for their respective weight class. The only weight
division where Boise State is not currently ranked is at 125-pounds.
The Broncos have six wrestlers ranked in the top 10 with Kirk Smith
(184-pounds) leading the way. Smith, who finished 8th at the NCAA
Championships last spring, is currently ranked No. 6.
Matt Casperson (197) received the second highest ranking at 7th. Tyler
Sherfey (157) and Nate Lee (174) are both currently ranked 8th, while
Adam Hall (149) is ranked 9th and Andy Hochstrasser (133) is ranked
10th. Rounding out the Bronco honors is Cory Fish (141) at 15th, Nick
Smith (HWT) at 16th and Kurt Swartz (165) at 18th.
Boise State is coming off a 24th place finish at last year’s NCAA
National Tournament, and is the defending Pac-10 Conference Champions.
BRONCO WRESTLING BEGINS DEFENSE OF PAC-10 TITLE

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State University wrestling team
will travel north this weekend to begin its quest to defend the Broncos
2008 Pac-10 Conference championship. The Broncos face a two-day,
four-team road trip that will begin Saturday, Nov. 1, in Spokane, Wash.
and commence Sunday, Nov. 2, in Great Falls, Mont.
On Saturday Boise State will face off with North Idaho
College and Northern Colorado. NIC will wrestle both Boise State and
Northern Colorado, simultaneously, at 5 p.m. Boise State will then go
head-to-head against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. On Sunday the Broncos
will travel to Montana to face the University of Great Falls and Montana
State-Northern. Boise State will face MSU-Northern at 5:00 p.m. and
Great Falls at 6:30 p.m.
The Broncos start the 2008-09 season ranked No. 13
nationally, according to Wrestling International Newsmagazine. The
Broncos have nine wrestlers ranked in the Top 20 by W.I.N. for their
respective weight class. They are coming off of an 11-2 season in
2007-08, which culminated with Boise State winning the fourth Pac-10
wrestling title in program history. The Broncos also sent nine wrestlers
to the NCAA tournament, which was highlighted by sophomore Kirk Smith’s
eighth-place finish.
“We’re not even looking at the Pac-10 tournament right now,” Head Coach
Greg Randall said about the upcoming season. “We are looking towards the
NCAA tournament and how we finish there... It’s nice to know we’re going
to have a really good chance to repeat at the Pac-10 tournament, but
it’s just a stepping stone to where we want to go.”
Smith, who earned All-American honors at 187-pounds last
season, leads a talented group of young wrestlers this year. He finished
his freshman campaign with a 28-6 overall record and finished runner-up
at the Pac-10 tournament.
The Broncos also boast two conference champions from a
season ago in senior Cory Fish and junior Nate Lee. Fish captured the
133-pound Pac-10 title, while Lee wrestled his way to the 174-pound
championship. Fish, who will wrestle at 141-pounds this year, is one of
just four seniors on the Bronco roster.
Fellow senior Tyler Sherfey will wrestle at 157-pounds
for the Broncos once again, after finishing last season with a 30-11
record and a Pac-10 runner-up finish. Sherfey started every dual last
season for the Broncos at 157-pounds.
One of the exciting new additions to the Bronco lineup
will be sophomore Andrew Hochstrasser, who red-shirted last season after
returning to Boise State from a two-year church mission. While
wrestling unattached, Hochstrasser compiled a 19-1 record last season en
route to three tournament titles at 133-pounds.
Boise State will be on the road until Wednesday, Nov.
19, when the Broncos return home to host Utah Valley State in a dual.
Most of the month of November will be spent at preseason tournaments,
however, to help the Broncos gear up for the Pac-10 season. The Broncos’
first conference dual of the season won’t be until Dec. 12, when Oregon
State travels to Boise.
Bronco wrestling opens season with 38-3 win over Northern Colorado

The Boise State wrestling team kicked off the new season in impression
fashion, Saturday night, with a decisive 38-3 win against the University
of Northern Colorado in Spokane, Wash.
Eli Hutchison jumpstarted the Broncos with a pin of Lance Gallegos at
the 03:25 mark in the 141-pound match. Boise State never looked back.
Hutcheson’s pin was the first of two for Boise State on the night.
Senior Tyler Sherfey recorded the Broncos’ second pin at 04:05 in
the165-pound match against Tim Frank.
Boise State also recorded two wins by technical fall and two more by
major decision. The first win by technical fall came at 174-pounds with
Nate Lee’s 22-8 defeat of Brendan Counters. Andrew Hochstrasser earned
the second of the night, 17-3, in the 133-pound match against Brett
Mahe.
In the 157-pound match Boise State’s Adam Hall defeated Tanner Wicks by
major decision, 10-2, while Kirk Smith also earned a major decision,
12-3, over Patrick Kerry at 197-pounds.
Also earning wins for Boise State was Nathaniel Holt, Kurt Swartz and
Nick Smith. Holt defeated Mitchell Polkowske, 6-4, at 149-pounds, while
Swartz defeated Ryan Johnson, 7-3, at 184-pounds. In the 285-pound match
Nick Smith beat Justin Tuell, 6-0.
Boise State’s only loss of the night came at 125-pounds when Northern
Colorado’s Tony Mustari beat Brian Owen, 1-0.
The broncos will finish their weekend road trip on Sunday, Nov. 2, in
Great Falls, Mont. Boise State will face Montana State-Northern at 5:00
p.m. before taking on the University of Great Falls at 6:30 p.m.

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State University’s wrestling team
followed up its opening season 38-3 win over the University of Northern
Colorado on Saturday (Nov. 1) with two more dominating performances on
Sunday (Nov. 2) as the Broncos handed Montana State University-Northern
a 38-9 loss, and the University of Great Falls a 35-7 defeat.
Ranked No. 13 in the preseason rankings from W.I.N.
Magazine, the Broncos won eight of 10 matches against both MSU-Northern
and Great Falls.
Andrew Hochstrasser (133 pounds), Eli Hutchison (141), Adam
Hall (157) and Kirk Smith (184) were the only Boise State wrestlers to
win both of their matches on Sunday. All four also won their matches on
Saturday against Northern Colorado to run their early season records to
3-0.
Boise State won three matches by pin on Sunday. Tyler
Sherfey won by fall at the 2:17 mark of his 165-pound match with Colter
Dimas for MSU-Northern, Brian Owen did the same at the 1:03 mark of his
match at 125 pounds against Kyle MIddlemist of Great Falls, and Kurt
Swartz pined Jacob Butenhoff of Great Falls at the 2:28 mark of his
match at 165 pounds.
The Broncos have a two-week break before returning
competition at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyo., Nov. 15 (Saturday).
