CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The No. 6 (NWCA/USA Today) ranked Boise State wrestling team finished day No. 1 of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa with a 2-1 record after beating No. 11 Oregon State, 24-12, in the Saturday (Jan. 8) night cap.

The Broncos opened day one of the 16 team tournament by beating No. 14 Iowa State, 25-13. A heartbreaking second-round loss to No. 5 Minnesota, 18-17, would end Boise State's tournament title hopes however. The Broncos did manage to rebound by beating their Pac-10 Conference rival; avenging an 18-18 tie with the Beavers in Boise State's home opener back on Nov. 13.

On Saturday, the Broncos overcame an early deficit with wins in five consecutive matches to blow the dual open. After a loss at 125 pounds by Boise State, Andrew Hochstrasser gave the Broncos their first lead of the dual with a win at 133. No. 2 ranked (InterMat) Hochstrasser beat No. 12 Garrett Drucker by 10-1 major decision to give Boise State a 4-3 lead in the dual.

Oregon State would answer though, scoring its second win of the dual at 141 pounds. Fortunately for the Broncos, that is the last time they would trail all night. No. 3 ranked Jason Chamberlain recaptured the lead for Boise State with a win at 149 pounds, beating Scott Sakaguchi by 3-1 decision. No. 2 Adam Hall extended the Bronco lead to 12-6 next with a 22-7 technical fall victory over Alex Elder at the 6:00 mark of the 157-pound match.

Kurt and Jacob Swartz helped push the Boise State lead out even further with consecutive wins at 165 and 174. Kurt first pinned (2:41) Jonathan Brascetta to give the Broncos an 18-6 lead. No. 13 ranked Jacob Swartz then scored a win by 6-1 decision over Cody Weishoff at 174.

Kirk Smith would put the dual away for Boise State with a win at 184. No. 1 ranked Smith beat Brice Arand by 6-2 decision to improve to 3-0 on his debut weekend to his senior season with the Broncos.

Oregon State would score wins a 197 and heavyweight to narrow the final gap to 24-12.

With the win, Boise State is still in contention for a fifth-place finish at the prestigious National Duals. The Broncos will next face No. 13 Missouri in consolation semifinals action, Sunday (Jan. 9) morning, at 9 a.m. (CST). Missouri's only loss this weekend came at the hands of No. 1 Cornell, 18-15, in the quarterfinals.

Broncos Fall to Minnesota, 18-17

Boise State fell just short of advancing to the semifinals of the National Duals, Saturday afternoon, as the Broncos dropped their quarterfinal dual against No. 5 Minnesota, 18-17, to end their championship run.

The Broncos and Golden Gophers would go back and forth all dual long, but in the end it was Minnesota by the slimmest of margins to advance in the winner's bracket.

The Gophers opened up the dual with an early 3-0 advantage as No. 6 (InterMat) ranked Zach Sanders took down No. 17 Alan Bartelli by 11-5 decision to win the 125-pound match. Boise State's Andrew Hochstrasser (No. 2 ranked) would immediately even the team score at 3-3 however, with a win by 8-1 decision against David Thorn at 133.

Minnesota regained the lead one match later as No. 2 Mike Thorn scored a win by fall against No. 11 Levi Jones just 0:49 into the match. With the pin Minnesota would take its biggest lead of the dual, 9-3.

The Broncos wouldn't stay down for long though, as Jason Chamberlain and Adam Hall earned back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 to give Boise State its first lead of the dual. Chamberlain (No. 3) recorded the first win at 149 with a 16-5 major decision victory against Daniel Zilverberg. No. 2 ranked Hall followed suit with a 27-15 major decision win over Alec Ortiz at 157 to give the Broncos an 11-9 lead.

A pair of losses at 165 and 174 gave Minnesota the lead once again, 15-11, despite hard fought efforts from Kurt and Jacob Swartz. Kurt fell to No. 7 Cody Yohn, 6-0, before No. 13 ranked Jacob dropped the 174-pound match to No. 8 Scott Glasser, 3-2.

Boise State's Kirk Smith would put the Broncos right back within striking distance as the nation's No. 1 ranked 184-pound wrestler held off a strong effort from No. 7 Kevin Steinhaus for a 3-1 decision.

Smith was followed by Matt Casperson who recaptured the lead for Boise State, 17-15, with a win by 6-0 decision over Joe Nord at 197.

But even with a two point lead heading into the final match of the night, it appeared to be an uphill battle for the Broncos with true freshman J.T. Felix set to square off against Minnesota's No. 9 ranked heavyweight Tony Nelson. In order to secure the win for Boise State, Felix would need to score the upset.

Nelson secured an early lead against Felix with a two-point take down in the first period. After starting down in the second, he extended his lead to 3-0 with a one-point escape. Felix would not go away quietly however, as he scored a take down in the second to narrow the score to 3-2. Another one point escape by Nelson pushed his lead out to 4-2, and after a scoreless third period that is as close as Felix would get.

With the win in the final match, Minnesota retook the final team lead 18-17 to earn a trip to the semifinal round.

Boise State opened up its weekend at the National Duals in successful fashion, Saturday morning, with a 25-13 win over No. 14 Iowa State to advance to the quarterfinals of the 16 team tournament.

The Broncos scored two wins by major decision, while also recording a win by fall and another by technical fall. Senior Kirk Smith made his debut for Boise State a short one, making quick work of Richard Shafer in the 184-pound match. Smith, who enters the weekend ranked No. 1 nationally at 184 pounds, pinned Shafer at the 2:25 mark to earn his first win of the season.

Alan Bartelli would score the first win of the dual for the Broncos as No. 17 ranked Bartelli beat Brandon Jones by 12-4 major decision at 125 pounds. He was followed by No. 2 Andrew Hochstrasser, who scored Boise State's second win by major decision, taking down Benjamin Cash 11-0 in the 133-pound match.

After dropping a hard fought contest at 141 pounds, the Broncos would rebound at 149 as No. 3 Jason Chamberlain scored a win by 3-2 decision over Nathanael Carr. Adam Hall (No. 2 ranked) managed to extend the Boise State lead to 16-3 next with a 23-7 technical fall (7:00) against Trent Weatherman at 157 pounds.

Iowa State would narrow the score slightly with wins at 165 and 174, but the Broncos would shut the door on a rally with back-to-back wins at 184 and 197. Following Smith's win at 184, Matt Casperson scored Boise State's first upset of the weekend with a win by 3-2 decision over No. 12 Jerome Ward.

The Cyclones would draw the final team score to 25-13 with a win at heavyweight to conclude the dual.
