Mike Warchol (Washingtonpreps.com) has passed away

By Dave Gilbertson, August 19, 2007

I was just surfing the web and I found out that Mike Warchol had passed away on Monday, August 14, 2007.  Mike was the director of the WashingtonPreps.com web site that covered many high school sports across the state.  I had many positive interactions with Mike over the years and he was a great contributor to all sports, including wrestling.  It states below that a memorial will be held on August 26th, 2007.  We will all miss "Mike W" and his contribution to all sports in the state.

Mike WarcholAndrew Micheal Warchol passed away at the age of 35 Sunday night at his home in Vancouver, Washington.

While working for Rivals, Mike was an integral part of the Northwest operation. Besides publishing WashingtonPreps.com, he assisted several other publishers at HuskyDigest, CougZone and DuckSportsAuthority.

He took a lot of pride in his family, his daughter's softball team for which he coached back-to-back District 4 championships, his friends, the Cubs and the Peanuts gang!

Mike is survived by his wife Kimberlee and their three children.

Mike was a good friend and he will be missed.

This is tragic and shocking news to all of us I am sure. Mike was a great guy and most certainly will be missed. I have had the chance to work with Mike for over a year and a half, met him on several occassions and had several meals at NIKE camps and Junior Days and drove him all over Washington on my one trip… I am at a loss for words.

Mike Warchol passed away in the early hours of Monday morning in his home. The reason is not yet known and an autopsy will be performed.

Mike Warchol was instrumental in promoting Washington High School sports as administrator and operator of Washingtonpreps.com. His passions for Washington High School sports at all levels was amazing. He was a great person and a loving father. He will be dearly missed by many.

His untimely death happened just before his favorite time of the year, the High School Football season. He was busy writing preseason player profiles, preseason rankings, and gathering all the information he could for the upcoming season just hours before his passing. He was on the informational chat forums, and sending and responding to emails within three hours of his announced death. Truly a man of great passion to help recognize student-athletes in our State at all levels and all sports.

I pray for Mike's family. His young daughter that he was so proud of and often posted pictures of her softball team that he helped coach on his post in forums around the State, I pray for her. Mike, you will be missed big guy. You were one of a kind. I feel fortunate that our State had you on our side, that we had your support, dedication, and commitment.

God Bless

A memorial event for Mike Warchol will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, at Columbia Little League in Vancouver's David Douglas Park.

Warchol, who ran the high school sports Web site WashingtonPreps.com and was a coach and board member for Columbia Little League, died in his sleep early Monday from a blood clot in his lungs.

He was 35.

Mike is survived by his wife, Kim, and her three children.

"Baseball, that Web site, and the kids were his life," Kim Warchol said.

Mike was instrumental in getting children involved with Little League. When Columbia Little League expanded its fall ball program several years ago, CLL board members remember that Mike called the home of each eligible boy and girl to encourage them to participate.

"I couldn't even guess what percentage of the kids that were here because of Mike," Columbia Little League president Chris Speyer said.

"Mike knew everybody --- kids and adults," said Speyer, a close friend. And, Speyer said, Mike knew more than their names. "Normally, he had a story to go with (a name), something interesting about the person."

The Columbian is working on a story about Mike's contributions to young athletes in Clark County and beyond. That story is tentatively planned for the Community Sports report on Aug. 21.

The Aug. 26 memorial is planned as an informal gathering, according to Speyer, and will include an opportunity for those who attend to share their memories of Mike.

Readers and others associated with WashingtonPreps.com are sharing their thoughts and memories on that Web site.

A memorial fund to assist the family has been established through First Independent Bank in Vancouver.
