August 2, 1999

The Nationals have completed and we had two wrestlers earn All-American honors in the Junior Nationals. Mike Christian and Coyte Cooper each placed in Greco-Roman. The link to the complete results of the Cadet and Junior tournament are posted on our Homepage. Don't forget the Annual Team Picnic on August 21, 1999. I probably wont post anything until after the picnic. Hope to see everyone there.

July 5, 1999

This report from Mark Slevin on Monday night.

Four USA Everett wrestlers earn Titles at AAU Grand Nationals

"Our USA Everett kids had an outstanding AAU Grand Nationals tournament. Starting with Josh Decker bringing home, 2nd in Sombo, 1st in Greco-Roman, 4th in freestyle. Nathan Decker won National Championships in Sombo, Greco-Roman, and Freestyle. Derrick Garcia brought home two National Championships winning Sombo and Greco-Roman, and a 2nd in Freestyle. Chet Slevin for the second consecutive year in a row, won National Championships in Sombo, Greco-Roman, and Freestyle. All our of our kids were very dominate in the Greco-Roman style. We had a lot of positive comments from other wrestlers and coaches about how well they performed in all three styles. The sombo tournament was a great experience and a lot of fun." Derek Garcia's dad told me that Derek hit a five point throw in Greco for a touch fall. They didn't count the touch fall (not for kids) but the throw finished the tech.

Three USA Everett wrestlers earn All-American honors at USA Wrestling Kids Nationals

Four members of the USA Everett Wrestling Team competed for Team Washington at the USAW Kids Nationals in Waterloo, IA from June 30-July 3, 1999. It was the largest USAW Kids Nationals ever and had representation from 38 states. The USA Everett wrestlers that went were Zack Zweifel (Mt. Vernon), Kenny Kubec (Marysville), Jonny Gilbertson (Everett) and Ross Lampers (Monroe).

In the Greco-Roman competition Kubec and Gilbertson both earned All-American honors by placing in the top six in their respective Novice weight groups. Kenny Kubec was 4th at 60 lbs and Jonny Gilbertson was 5th at 65 lbs. Zweifel did not compete in Greco-Roman and Lampers did not make it to the medal rounds.

In the Freestyle competition Zweifel won the championship at Midget 50 lbs in dramatic fashion. Zweifel was down by 5 points at one time in the final but came back to within one point with time running out in the final round. With 3 seconds left Zweifel scored 2 points on an Olympic Roll to win the title. Kubec and Gilbertson both medaled again in Freestyle and each moved up a spot in Freestyle compared to their Greco-Roman results. Kenny Kubec was 3rd at 60 lbs and Jonny Gilbertson was 4th at 65 lbs.

Other medal winners from Washington were Justin Davidson, Bothell, Wash.(Eastside Wrestling Club) with a 5th place in Greco-Roman at Schoolboy 80 and Keoki Nisley, Lakewood, Wash(Lakewood Club) with a 3rd place medal in Freestyle at Midget 112.

USA Everett high school age wrestlers will be competing at their Nationals in North Dakota 7/17-24/99.

June 20, 1999

The USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Kids Western Regional in Pocatello, ID June 15-19, 1999. The kids did very well and 7 out of 8 medaled in the Greco-Roman portion of the tournament. In Freestyle we had 5 of our wrestlers medal and placed three of them in the finals, with one winning gold. Kelly Kubec won his third consecutive Greco-Roman title while Zach Zweifel was dominant in his first year at Western Regionals. Kenny Kubec added two more medals to his Western Regionals total and Tony Kubec placed in the top three in both styles. Chet Slevin wrestled for USA Everett and was a finalists in both styles, winning the Greco-Roman title. Matt Symons had a good tournament by placing 4th in the Cadet group. Jonny Gilbertson and Nathan Decker both medaled in Greco-Roman but were knocked out of the freestyle while competing in some very competitive groups.

Zack Zeifel, Kenny Kubec, Jonny Gilbertson and Ross Lampers will all be competing at the Kids Nationals starting June 30, 1999 while Matt Symons will be attending the Cadet Nationals in North Dakota in July. This is the first group from USA Everett to compete at the USAW Kids Nationals which is a three year old event. Prior to 1997 USAW National events were for High school age and up and the 14 and under kids season ended at Regionals.

Medal winners are listed by age group.

I didn't have a chance to record the results of other Washington wrestlers as people were taking all the bracket sheets off the walls at the end. Everyone likes to be able to see how things end up so when people selfishly remove the current brackets, it makes it difficult to find out for others. I hope that if you are guilty of doing this that you will stop in the future. Go to pairing if you want to get a copy, or record your own results (like 98% of the people do).

With my "Rant" ended, if you have results of Washington kids, email them to me and I will post them. Contact Dave Gilbertson email.

Several Washing residents won medals at the Veterans Nationals Championships at Seattle, Wash., June 18-19, 1999. The results can be found by clicking the hyperlink.

Not to much to write about since we haven't had a tournament in 3 weeks. The Cadet and Jr trials are getting under way as noted below by Alex DeLaPena. I'm going to head out to Lake Stevens in a few hours to watch (get my fix). Our kids team is getting ready for Western Regionals and coach Ron is really starting to raise the intensity level. He's going to have them peaking right on schedule. The Auction that we had 2 weeks ago was very successful and we want to THANK EVERYONE who helped by working on the auction, donating items or cash, attending the auction, buying items, ETC!!! The funds will be used to help send our wrestlers to major events so they can continue to progress with their wrestling careers. For the first time, USA Everett will be sending representatives to the Kids Nationals in Iowa. Those scheduled so far are Kenny Kubec (N 60), Jonny Gilbertson (N 65), Ross Lampers (N 70) and Zach Zweifel (M 50). We may end up having 1-2 more attend.

We're also planning on hosting the "Ohio All-Stars" kids team in mid-July. This is a team of high-level wrestlers from Ohio that also includes kids from PA, NJ, NC, etc. and range in age from 5th grade thru 9th grade. Weights are 70-140. In looking at their credentials, most of them were champions or placers at the Ohio Tournament of Champions, a one day tournament that had over 2900 kids compete this year!! In 1998 they went to California to compete and this year their coming to Everett. Our team will be made up of USA Everett and Lake Stevens Berserkers wrestlers and then we will probably call to recruit the best wrestlers we can from around the state to fill in the holes and try to give these guys a run "for the money". If you're reading this and would like to have some of your wrestlers be considered, email the names and weights to me and I'll let you know if they get to wrestle later. We will know more next week as to location and times as we try to get the details worked out. Good luck to everyone in Pocatello!!

The following is by Alex DeLaPena:

WASHINGTON STATE CADET and JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM TRIALS

This Years Washington State National Team selection will be held in a different way. The WSWA board is hoping to structure the best possible team to represent Washington State. The First place finisher at the State Freestyle & Greco, held this past May 8th and 9th is automatically on the National Team. If the first place finisher decides to change weight classes, he will forfeited his locked position. The remaining top five placers in each weight class will compete for the top three positions. Other wrestlers qualified to compete for a team spot on the National Team are the top three placers at the WIAA State High School Championships, past All-Americans, and or medical petitions. The top two at the trials and the first place Freestyle and Greco Champions go on to Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, this July 17th - 24th

The Teams Trials will be held on Saturday June 5th for Greco at Lake Steven's High School and June 12th at Ellensburg High School. Wrestling starts at 10:00 a.m.

I just was surfing the web and saw a California site with some local results. I was just scanning it real quick to see and all of the sudden I see the name Mason Mazza!! USA Everett guys know Mason as one of our Bantam state champs last year. He is still wrestling (and winning) in California. What I liked best was even though he moved to California, and is on a club there, the club name list with his name was "USA Everett". Mason, you'll always be one of us!! Good luck at state.

I just took a look at the cover of the USA Wrestler Magazine/Newspaper from USA Wrestling. Let's see who is the first person to contact me by e-mail with the name of the Washington person in the picture. My e-mail link is above and I will list the winner of this little contest!

For those of you interested in a tournament to tuneup before state there will be one for kids in Oregon. John Scott (the tournament director) called me and said that it was originally for Juniors and up but they have opened it up to kids and Cadets. This is the "AXEMEN OPEN" and will be at South Eugene HS in Eugene, OR. There will be a Freestyle & then a Greco tournament after. John Scott can be reached at 541-484-7398 Open Brackets, Medals 1-3, Entry Fee $5 per style. John said its standard, weigh-in 7-9 am and wrestle at 10:00. This is open to all kids, Washington included so here is your chance for the "tune-up" that many of you have been asking about since the state date was changed. Glenn Harvey of Olympia was the individual who worked to see if they could open this up for kids. He also said that the Regional tuneup tournament will be open to kids in June.

At the Western Junior Regional Freestyle Championships, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., April 29-30, 1999, Michael Christian of USA Everett took second in the 220 lb division losing by fall to John Fager, West Jordan, Utah, the same wrestler Michael teched in the GR. I heard that Michael was "putting it to him" pretty good when he made a mistake and got caught. I also got news back from Brian Shaw's dad that Brian came within one victory of earning All-American honors in the 187.5 GR open division. He lost two matches - both to seeded wrestlers, he teched two wrestlers and beat the service champion from Army 15 - 10. With 20 lb differences in groups Brian is kind of in between weights and wrestled up at 187, weighing in at 183 "after two buffets".

Washington state had several other wrestlers medal and those results are as follows:

105.5 - 4th Mike Magnussen, Blaine, Wash., 5th - Jaime Garza, Moses Lake, Wash.

114.5 - 1st - Burke Barnes, Lake Stevens, Wash.

"Just a quick note on what happen in Topeka, Zach Morgan NP, O J Hayden 6th, Jay Carlile 6th, Brent Stover 4th, Chet Slevin 2nd, we had total of 5 kids from WA. Not bad bringing 4 medals home out of 5 kids."

28 members of the USA Everett Wrestling Team medaled at the I-5 West Coast Championships in Marysville, WA on April 3, 1999. Over 500 wrestlers entered the tournament which is the largest one held in the state of Washington. The tournament got started a little late because of the large number of entries but then ran relatively smooth and the last match was done by 7:00 PM. On behalf of both clubs involved in running this tournament I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped to make the tournament a success. It was nice to see a few dads step forward to referee when we ran short of help at the end. A note to the Renegade team from Oregon, thanks for coming up to compete(and for helping as a ref at the end). A number of our high school age wrestlers worked running the tournament instead of competing but will be "in singlet" for the team competition April 17. Complete tournament results are posted on our homepage. A number of our kids are going to Reno next week for the World Of Wrestling Championships and then we have the Greater Northwest Team Championships that we host with Lake Stevens at their high School on April 17-18, 1999. USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Steelclaw Classic in Sedro Woolley, WA on 03/27/1999. The remainder of the team that are high school age competed at the Northwest Junior Regionals held in Vancouver, WA. I do not have the Regional results at this time. The I-5 Championships are coming up this weekend in Marysville, WA. This is a very big tournament so everyone needs to show up and plan on working all day. I would like to thank all the parents and kids from USA Everett that helped run the two tables at the Sedro-Woolley tournament. I hope that the other teams that attend the I-5 Championships and The NW Team Championships will help us by at least manning one table, if not two. If we can keep all the mats manned and open then the tournaments can run on time, and this requires everyones help.

Medal winners for the Steelclaw Classic are listed by age group.

March 21, 1999

USA Everett Wrestling Team sent 7 wrestlers to compete at the Peninsula Superstars Tournament in Portland, OR on March 20, 1999. This was a very competitive tournament that had a large number of wrestlers from Idaho and Washington in addition to the regular Oregon wrestlers. Four of our wrestlers medaled but two of our kids that regularly medal did not place. We had Derek Garcia 1st at 50 lbs and Kenny Kubec 1st at 60 lbs. Also medaling were Kelly Kubec 2nd at 60 lbs and Nathan Decker 3rd at 80 lbs. Tony Kubec had one loss in OT but was still in the tournament when he had to withdraw after his last victory due to injury during that match. Jonny Gilbertson had a rare "two and out" tournament (only the second time ever) at 70 Novice. I don't know about some of the other divisions but Novice 70 and 80 were extremely tough brackets. 70 only had 8 kids but 4 of them have won multiple state titles, 3 have been Western Regional Finalists (including Jonny) and one was National Champion last year!!! 80 looked just as tough and Nathan had to settle for 3rd place. There were 16 kids in that bracket and probably 5-6 will be definite medal contenders at Western Regionals in Idaho this June. We also saw a great match between Mike Pierce and Drew Hageman in the Junior division. Both of these Oregon high school boys placed at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals last year and put on a great display of skill and power.

The remainder of our team attended in state tournaments. George King took first at the Ferndale tournament and Joey Kubec took 2nd. I have not received other results. If you have results you would like posted then email me using the above link. Don't forget the I-5 Championships on April 3rd and the Greater NW Team Championships on April 17 & 18. The Team tournament has FS on Saturday and GR on Sunday. These "team" tournaments are open to all "individuals". The Team score is just a tally of how your individual wrestlers placed. We are really encouraging the Oregon and Idaho wrestlers to attend as the competition get "hot and heavy". Don't' miss these!!! Also our team auction is on May 23, 1999 and we all need to be working on getting items and services to auction and getting our guest signed up.

Our club is also very proud to announce that one of our alumni was runner-up in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held on March 20, 1999 at Penn State. Otto Olson was 2nd at 174 lbs and is only a sophomore! Congratulations to Otto and the rest of the Michigan Team. The Seattle P-I also reported that a Curtis High graduate was 1st at 165 for Boise State and a Heavyweight from Kent was 4th.

March 16, 1999

I wasn't at the last tournament myself as I was gone on a ski trip. It was great to see the sun for a change!! I don't have the results other than I know Kenny and Jonny took 1st at 60 and 65 while Kelly Kubec and Derek Garcia both took a 2nd. I was still gone for our team meeting on Sunday but Keith told me we had about three times the recent turnout of parents which is great. We want to thank all of those who showed up for the meeting and also all the people they have signed up to work at the tournament. With the auction and the two tournaments coming up we need to have EVERYONE involved and helping. If you haven't signed up yet to work at the tournaments please see Keith Kubec at practice to get your assignment.

The Pitt club is having a tournament this weekend which I hear is supposed to be pretty good. We were told that a large group from Idaho will attend this tournament so we have changed our plans and will be taking "Jonny and the Kubec's" to Portland to compete. I haven't heard if others are going yet or if they are staying in state this weekend. Information about the tournament location can be found at the Oregon TOWeR web site.

Olson Earns Second Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Award

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan wrestler Otto Olson (Everett HS/USA Everett) has grabbed the Big Ten Conference spotlight once again, being named co-Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. The 174-pound junior/sophomore shares the honor for the week of Feb. 15-21 with Jeremy Hunter of Penn State. Olson also earned the Big Ten weekly honor earlier this month, on Feb. 10.

Olson helped the ninth-ranked Michigan grapplers to conference wins over Penn State (20-19 on Feb. 19) and Ohio State (24-9 on Feb.21) in Ann Arbor. Ranked fifth in the country entering the weekend's meets, Olson disposed of two top-20 wrestlers, defeating Penn State's Glenn Pritzlaff, ranked second in the nation entering Friday's competition, 9-4 and No. 18 Bo James of Ohio State 11-5.

The victories pumped Olson's winning streak up to 15 while adding to his perfect Big Ten record (8-0). He is 15-0 in dual meets, and his 30-3 record on the season includes a 9-3 mark against ranked opponents. Last weekend's performance propelled Olson to a No. 2 national ranking.

Olson, Warren Impress as U-M Topples Penn State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9 University of Michigan wrestling team defeated 10th-ranked Penn State in front of a season-high 848 fans on Friday (Feb. 19) at U-M's Cliff Keen Arena. The win was the Wolverines' 10th dual victory of the season against four defeats.

Fifth-ranked sophomore Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS/USA Everett) was the highlight of the evening -- and possibly of the season to date -- for the Wolverines as he controlled and conquered Penn State's second-ranked Glenn Pritzlaff, earning a 9-4 decision in the 174-pound matchup. Olson (27-3) is a perfect 14-0 in dual meet matches on the season with one meet remaining.

Go to Washington State High School Wrestling and click on Wrestler of the Week for week 9 for more information on Coyte. Former team member Otto Olson (University of Michigan) continues his climb in the College rankings. He is a sophomore and is presently ranked #5 at 174 lbs in Division I wrestling.

USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the NW Collegiate Championships in Portland, OR on 02/13/1999.

In the Bantam division Derek Garcia lost a match by the score of 4-5 but came back in the finals to win and take 1st at 50 lbs. In the Novice division Kenny Kubec continued his Oregon winning streak in beating his teammate Kelly Kubec by a score of 3-2 in the 60 lbs finals. At 65 lbs was Jonny Gilbertson who met Trevor Hall in the finals for the 5th time this year!! Trevor won the final 4-0 to even their season series at 3 wins each. Michael Lomsdalen, who just started training with us in January, went on a pinning tear and rode it all the way to the finals at 70 lbs and ended up with 2nd place. Michael has shown tremendous progress in a short period of time. Nathan Decker lost a heartbreaker in the finals to Josiaha Sigler to end up 2nd at 75 lbs.

A special note of appreciation goes out to the Seaside wrestlers in Jonny's group for their sportsmanship. Jonny and I appreciated the nice complements that he received from both the wrestlers and their parents as well as the support you gave him after the tough loss to Trevor. Seaside Wrestling is a class act!!

James Whitescarver became the third wrestler in Metro League history to win four league titles in four years last night by winning the title at 148 lbs. He had his name in the headline for the article in the Seattle Times-PI Sunday paper.

WESCO AAA District Championships at Mill Creek, WA

Monroe took first place for the first time in over 20 years and in the process ended Lake Stevens run of 10 straight league titles. It went down to the heavyweight bout. If the Lake Stevens wrestler wins, Lake Stevens takes the title while Monroes hopes where on the shoulders of a wrestler from Mariner. The Mariner High wrestler pinned Nick Mumford of Lake Stevens causing an eruption of applause from the Monroe section of the bleachers as they knew it gave them the title by 1 ½ points. Monroe was led by four champions in a row (129-148), all of whom have trained for years with USA Everett during the freestyle season.

Lee Ottow 1st at 129 lbs, Jon Sharpe 1st at 135 lbs, Jared Rich 1st at 141 lbs, Tyson Springer 1st at 148 lbs, Cecelio Martinez 1st at 178 lbs and Mike Christian 1st at 215 lbs.

January 31, 1999

USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Washington State Folkstyle Championships in Marysville, WA on January 30, 1999.

Derek Garcia placed 1st at 50 lbs 8 and under and we had three medalist in the 10 and under group. That group included Michael Deinas in 1st at 75 lbs, Nikita Hayes 4th at 50 lbs and Lucas Musseau 4th at 70 lbs.

Kelly and Kenny Kubec continued their dominance in the 60 lbs Novice division with Kelly getting the upper hand this week after finishing second to Kenny Kubec in the last two tournaments. Jonny Gilbertson met Trevor Hall of Battleground in the finals for the 4th time this year. Trevor reversed the trend and got the better of Jonny this go round and they will probably bang heads again at the Northwest Championships in 2 weeks. This is becoming a very good and friendly rivalry. Unfortunately Nathan Decker (our 75 lb Novice) was sick at home and unable to compete. We expect him back and ready to go for the Northwest Championships in two weeks.

Tony Kubec was our oldest competitor and took 1st at 85 lbs in the 14 and under division. This Folkstyle championship goes along with the two Freestyle championships he has won.

There was also a girls division which Tahnee, Nikita and Chelsea entered. Unfortunately there where no matches for them but they were awarded gold medals. All three also competed in the boys competition with Nikita placing 4th in her group. After taking next weekend off the team will send a group down to the Northwest Championships in Portland Oregon on the weekend of February 13-14, 1999.

January 24, 1999

The Dream Duals took place last weekend and Anacortes High School defeated Lake Stevens High School to win the 3A Dream Dual Championships in Spokane, WA on Jan. 23rd . The Final score was Anacortes 44 - Lake Stevens 23. The Anacortes varsity has at least 7 kids that train or have trained at USA Everett.

USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Oregon Classic in Portland, OR on January 23, 1999. We took a team of nine kids down to the Classic and seven of them placed in the top three and four of them were champions. Derek Garcia lost a bout early in the tournament at 50lb Bantam but was able to come back by winning the rest of his matches and then won the title based on the points scored tie-breaker. Zack Zweifel competed in the 50 lb Midget division and also was in a three way tie for first place with one loss after the round robin finals but ended up in 3rd place based points scored tie-breaker. Zach had two byes in the preliminary rounds which hurt is point scoring possibilites.

Kenny Kubec continued his string of success in Oregon by winning the Novice 60 lb division. Kenny has not had a point scored against him in any matches for the last two Oregon tournaments. After four tries Jonny Gilbertson won his first Classic title at Novice 65 lbs. Jonny was runner-up in his first two Classics and had to injury default last year after making the round robin finals. Jonny beat two former Classic Champions on the way to the title. Nathan Decker took 1st at 75 lbs and continued a USA Everett tradition by wrestling in the final match of the tournament as they were rolling up mats around him. I don't know how many times over the past 3-4 years I have watched either Jonny or Kelly wrestle the very last match of a tournament and now it was Nathan's turn. Kelly Kubec wrestled well and ended up in 2nd at 60 lbs after wrestling Kenny for the title. It looks like 1997 all over when these two battled in the finals of every tournament all the way through Western Regionals where they split the Greco and Freestyle titles at Butte.

The final medal winner was Tony Kubec who finished 2nd at 85 lb Schoolboy. Tony wrestled very tough and lost a heartbreaker to the champion by a score of 4-2. Also competing for USA Everett were Zach Burnett and Blake Tate.

The "Grizzlies" are divisions of USA Everett that coach the novice wrestlers and are located at Everett High School and Jackson High School in Mill Creek. They competed this weekend at the Northwest Washington Folkstyle Championship in Anacortes, WA. This tournament is the championship for the Snohomish County Novice League. The results from the Mill Creek Grizzlies team were reported to me and are as follows:

1st Place Finishers: Danny Davis, Colton Hastings, Kenny Hudson, Lucas Musseau, Michael Deinas.

2nd Place Finishers: Cody Dalgliesh, Thomas Hall, Kyle Hastings, Nicholas Sadowski, Andrew Walt.

3rd Place Finishers: Greg Kohler, Jordan Stevens.

4th Place Finishers: BJ Alewine, Randy Bacon, Chad Bosworth, Grady Finnerty, Anthony Palko, Lee Sutton, Randall Walt.

January 18, 1999

No action for USA Everett Wrestling this weekend but some other Washington kids went back to Oklahoma for the Tulsa Nationals and had great results. Jay Carlile of Battleground took first place at 105 lbs in the 12 and under group. He was tied for most pins but finished 2nd in the outstanding wrestler competition based on total time of falls. OUTSTANDING!! Also competing and placing for Battleground were Trevor Hall in 4th at 64 lbs-10 and under and Jake Farmer in 4th at 80 lbs-10 and under. I believe this is correct but they use different weights and age groups for the Tulsa Tournament than USA Wrestling does so the age and weight I listed could be off a bit. Placing three wrestlers is a big task, especially for one team traveling that far. I couldn't find ANY placings for Washington wrestlers in the 1998 results. This tournament is put on by the same group of people that will be staging the Reno WOW tournament in April.

January 10, 1999

USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Oregon Classic Qualifier in Newburg, OR on 01/09/1999. A total of nine wrestlers went and had great results. The combined match record of our team was 42 wins and 4 losses!!! All of our wrestlers qualified for the Classic finals in two weeks and six of them qualified as champions. We had two second place finishes and one third. The top three from this tournament get to compete in the Oregon Classic in Portland on January 3rd, 1999. Kenny Kubec and Jonny Gilbertson did not have a point scored against them in the entire tournament. Kenny pinned all his opponents except for his teammate Kelly who he defeated by a 6-0 score. Jonny won his first match 11-0 and pinned all the rest, the last one in :08 seconds to secure the title. The results by age are as follows.

8 and under: Derrick Garcia 1st at 50 lbs.

10 and under: Zack Zweifel 1st at 50 lbs.

12 and under: Kenny Kubec 1st at 60 lbs, Kelly Kubec 2nd at 60 lbs, Jonny Gilbertson 1st at 65 lbs, Nathan Decker 1st at 75 lbs, Zach Burnett 3rd at 80 lbs, Blake Tate 2nd at 90 lbs.

14 and under: Tony Kubec 1st at 85 lbs.

December 24, 1998
We had an interesting turnout on December 23, 1998. Usually it is just a small group of the young kids at this time of year but on that night the room was loaded with extra "firepower" as a number of our college age wrestlers are home from break and joined the turnout as did some of our local high school members . It was fun watching guys like Otto Olson (3X state champ and currently at the University of Michigan) bang heads with Mike Bundy (2X state champ and currently at the University of Indiana). Boyd Ballard (2X state champ and a medalists at '97 Open Greco Nationals) jumped into the fray as did Coyte Cooper (2X state champ and 3X Cadet World Team Member). Andy Cook showed up (3X state champ) as did Jordon Ottow (Cadet and Junior Greco Nationals runner-up) and Lee Ottow (state champ and 3rd at Cadet Nationals). An extra turnout will be held on Sunday December 27, 1998 at 12:00 so we get to watch these guys again.
December 20, 1998
The prestigious Tri-State tournament was held this weekend in Coeur d"Alene, Idaho. This tournament features top high school teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana and has over 40 teams competing. I do not know how many high school age wrestlers from our USA Everett team competed for various high schools but I have been told that three of them were champions!!! Tyson Springer competing for Monroe High School took the title at 152 lbs. and received the "Outstanding Wrestler" award for the tournament by beating a two-time Tri-State Champion. John Sharpe, also of Monroe High School won at 135 pounds and Coyte Cooper of Anacortes High School placed 1st at his group (around 141 lbs). Lake Stevens High School also competed at the Tri-state for the 12th year in a row and actually won the tournament!!! Lake Stevens had Theo White as a Champion at 130 lbs and Burke Barnes placed 2nd as a freshman.

December 6, 1998

Two members of the USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the NW Team Championships in The Dalles, OR on 12/05/1998. Both wrestlers placed in the 12 and under age group with Jonny Gilbertson taking 1st at 65 lbs and Zach Burnett 3rd at 85 lbs. The next major tournament for USA Everett will be the Oregon Classic Qualifier which takes place on January 9, 1999. For that tournament we plan on having wrestlers least 7 of our wrestlers with state championships ready to compete.

Zach Burnett started out well the first few rounds however he ran into some heavy competition the last two rounds. His first loss was to Bryson Gutches who I believe won the Folkstyle Kids National Championship in 1997 for his age group. His next loss was to Andrew Poore who went on to beat Gutches in the finals. The good thing about wrestling kids of this level is that lets you know where you are at the and what you need work on. Zach is in the first year of the Novice division and it's matches against kids like these that he can learn from to really get ready for the upcoming tournaments.

Jonny Gilbertson had a small group this time at Novice 65 and only had two matches in the tournament. He pinned both of his opponents to win his division. Trevor Hall, also of Washington, came in a quarter pound over and wrestled in the Novice 70 pound division. When we left, Trevor was still in the hunt for the title and had one match left, which we assume he won.

Jonny did get in one additional match which was an exhibition against Alex Poore. Alex is in the 65 pound Midget division and is one of the toughest Midgets that I've ever seen. Last week in Seaside Jonny and Alex wrestled an exhibition which Alex won by a score of 4-2 when he scored a reversal with three seconds left in the match. The Seaside match was very exciting and others must have heard about it because when these two squared off for the exhibition match at The Dalles the crowd around the mat grew tremendously. This time it was Jonny who was able to make the big move and he was able to get Alex into a cradle off the takedown and take a 5-0 lead into the second round. Over the next two rounds they battled evenly and scored one point each. These two really go at each other and I look forward to the next time I get to watch them wrestle.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team is ranked 25th in the latest InterMat Wrestling Magazine poll. The Maize and Blue had an impressive performance at the Michigan State Open (Nov. 7-8), earning several individuals national recognition.......junior Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS/USA Everett) is ranked eighth following his defeats of No. 3 Mark Bybee (Northwestern) and No. 4 Nick Mengerink (Pittsburgh) at the Michigan State Open. For his efforts, Olson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

November 29, 1998

USA Everett Wrestlers have competed at several events the past two weeks. On November 21, 1998 Zach Burnett Competed at the Silverton Open at Silverton, OR. In that tournament Zach ended up in 2nd at 85 lbs. I was told that Zach wrestled really well but made one mistake in the final and paid dearly. Been there, done that!

On November 27, 1998 the team sent three wrestlers to the "Tough Guy" tournament which was held in Tacoma, WA. This tournament is for the South Puget Sound league but the tournament director was nice enough to let our team compete even though we are not members of their league. We only sent three wrestlers as everyone else was tied up over the holiday. Kelly Kubec was excellent as usual and took 1st at 60 lbs. We wrestled Kenny Kubec up a weight group at 63 lbs and he ended up in fourth place. Jonny Gilbertson made it to the finals but was upset at 66 lbs by a wrestler we had never seen before. I talked with a number of people that had wrestled both Jonny and his opponent before the final and they all told me that Jonny would win. I guess the other kid didn't know he was supposed to lose!! Gilbertson continued south to compete the next day at the Pacific Coast Championships in Seaside, OR. I think the loss on Friday was good for him because he took it to a different level in Seaside where he ended up meeting Trevor Hall for the title. These two are both defending state champs from last year and Trevor was also a Western Regional Champion. The last time they had wrestled was two years ago in the I-5 Championships final were Trevor "spanked" Jonny 10-0. Trevor scored the first takedown but Jonny came back in the second round to score a three point near fall. With a one point lead Jonny chose the down position. Trevor was trying hard to turn Jonny for the win but Jonny somehow came out and scored a reversal and then turned Trevor over for the pin and the championship. I have a feeling that these two will be seeing a lot of each other this year.

The Pacific Coast Championships was a well run tournament. They had exhibitors, raffle prizes, trophies, a good breakfast in the cafeteria, etc. I would highly recommend this tournament to our club members and to others that read this page.

November 8, 1998

USA Everett Wrestling Team sent a small but potent group of 6 wrestlers to the pre-season "All Comers Wrestling Tournament" in Olympia, WA on 11/07/1998. Of the 6 wrestlers, 5 made the finals in their group with 4 winning championships. Placing in the 10 and under group were Zack Zweifel 1st at 50 lbs and Sam Ottow 2nd at 50 lbs. In the 12 and under division Zach Burnett was 1st at 81 lbs and finished tied for second in the "Kingpin" competition which was for the most falls. The final two placers were in the 12 and under class with Jonny Gilbertson 1st at 66 lbs and Tony Kubec 1st at 86 lbs. With only 6 wrestlers USA Everett had one of the smallest teams in the competition but still was able to place 6th in the overall scoring.

USA Everett has an affiliated novice wrestling program called "The Grizzly Wrestling Program" that is directed by Ron Anderson at Jackson High School. This group participates in the Northwest Novice Wrestling League. Registration and first practice will be at Jackson High School Gymnasium in Mill Creek on Monday Nov. 16th from 5:30pm-7:00pm.
