February 17 - The Mat Classic was held the weekend of February 15-16,
2002 at the Tacoma Dome and set a new record for attendance with over 32,000
passing through the gates over the two days. There was great competition with
all four categories of high schools holding state wrestling championships under
one roof for the 14th consecutive year. Prior to starting the Mat
Classic each division held a tournament at a different site. Having all
them in on location gives the fans a chance to watch all the competitors from
the various school sizes.
In the past several years the four high schools around the Mill creek area
have all placed in the team standings but this year only two out of the four
schools scored at state.
Jackson High School in Mill creek did not have any wrestlers qualify for the
state meet this year although they did have several qualify and wrestle in
the Regional tournament that took place in Snohomish on February 8-9, 2002.
Mariner High School also did not have any wrestlers score at the state meet.
Cascade High School placed 23rd in the 4A team race with 23 points.
Cascade was in the top ten through the first day but actually lost a a lot of
team points when one of their members that was in the semi-finals was
disqualified for flagrant misconduct and all the points that he had earned were
taken away. The disqualification was controversial as the Jesse Calderon
and his coach said the alleged action did not take place. The tournament
committee ruled to disqualify him without him even getting to present his side
of the story. At the time of the disqualification he was undefeated
for the season with a record of 32-0. It was a most unfortunate ending to
his high school career as both contestants wanted to continue the match to
determine the real winner. Medal winners for Cascade were Brent Larson 8th
at 145, Josh McDonnell 6th at 160 and Jesse Erickson 6th at 171. Also
scoring points for Cascade were Tony Kubec at 119. Kubec went into the
tournament with only one loss and that was to an Oregon wrestler but had an off
day and was out by his third match with two losses. It was a heartbreaking
end to the season for Kubec as the week before he won the Regional tournament
in Snohomish where he defeated wrestlers that ultimately ended up in 1st, 3rd
and 5th at the state meet. Rory Douglas lost his first match 3-2 and his second
in double overtime to exit the tournament. McDonnell, Erickson and
Calderon are all seniors. Douglas is a Junior while Kubec and Larson
are sophomores and will return for two more years.
Lynnwood High School has placed well in the past but was down in the
standings this year. They totaled 17 points to place 26th in the final
team standing of the 3A division.
Results for wrestlers that have trained with the USA Everett Wrestling Team
are as follows:
AAA State Championships
Jonathan Decker, Anacortes, age 17, 2nd at 160 lbs;
Kye Kirkpatrick, Anacortes, age 18, 4th at 145 lbs;
AAAA State Championships
John Hanks, Marysville, age 16, 5th at 103;
Justin Davidson, Bothell, age 15, 2nd at 112 lbs;
William Ward, Monroe, age 16, 6th at 140 lbs.
February 10 - The USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the NW Collegiate
Championships
in Portland, OR on 02/10/2002. The tournament is a two day event with kids
that are ages 5-12 wrestling on Saturday and ages 13-16 on Sunday. I
didn't attend on Saturday to watch the younger kids as I was watching our local
high school team at their Regional tournament so I don't have details on how the
day went for them, other than the results that were emailed to me. I was
there with the two boys that wrestled on Sunday and they wrestled very hard.
Patrick O'Neil, Sedro Woolley, age 13, finished 2nd but wrestled well enough
to win, losing in the final by one point. All through the tournament his
Fireman's Carry takedown was almost unstoppable. He had his opponent
thrown to his back 2-3 times the last round but couldn't secure it long enough
to register control, and the point needed to win.
Jonny Gilbertson seemed to leave his "A" game at home but managed to progress
through the tournament to the point were he wrestled Eli Hutchinson of Alaska
with the winner to take the title. Eli Hutchinson was a USAW National
Freestyle champion in 2000 and 2001 while Gilbertson won a USAW National
Freestyle title in 2001 at the weight group right below Hutchinson. While
Hutchinson was "cruising" through the group, Gilbertson was struggling to win
but he raised the level for his match with Hutchinson. After a scoreless
first round Gilbertson choose down and with about 5 seconds left in the second
round got an escape to take a 1-0 lead into the third and final round.
About 45 seconds into the third and final round Hutchinson was able to get
Gilbertson in a front quarter-nelson. He eventually worked it in a two
point takedown to win the match by a final score of 2-1. Hutchinson went
on to win the title while the loss bumped Gilbertson down to third place.

January 27 - The USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Washington State
Folkstyle
Championships for Kids in Silverdale, WA on 01/26/2002. The tournament had
a record number of entries for the forth year in a row since it was started by
the late Tom Shaw in 1999. With almost 900 entries the tournament ran much
longer than planned and some weight groups did not get to cross over for the
final championship. In the list of champions you may find two champions
noted for the same weight group, if they were in an extremely large bracket.
That means they won their half of the bracket but the two winners did not get to
meet for the final championship as it was almost into Sunday when it completed.
The next event for the team will be Northwest Championships which are held in
Portland, OR in two week. Medal winners are listed by age group.

lived up to it's billing again this year with around 2000 of the countries best
young wrestlers attending. Joshua Villani, age 8 of Everett, led the team
with a third place finish at 64 pounds in the 8 & Under Division. The
other wrestlers competing were Jonny Gilbertson of Everett, age 14 and Kai Van
Leuven of Lake Stevens, age 13. Both wrestlers won matches but were
eliminated before making the medal rounds in the 15 & under

January 6 - This weekend the USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at Oregon Classic Qualifier
tournaments held in The Dalles, OR and Newberg, OR on 01/06/2002. There
were 5 qualifying tournaments held around the state of Oregon on Saturday and
wrestlers had to finish in the top two places to move on to the finals to be
held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds (Redmond, OR) on January 12,
2002. The Newberg Qualifier gets to send the top four placers because it
has a larger number of entrees (500+) than the other four tournaments. USA
Everett qualified 13 out of the 15 wrestlers that competed.
Medal winners are listed by age group.

December 15 - The War on the Floor tournament at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia finished on Saturday December 15, 2001. This is a three day tournament with separate tournaments on each day. Thursday is the Junior High Novice tournament and Friday is the High School Novice tournament. On Saturday is their toughest which is the High School Elite tournament.
Cascade HS of Everett finished 2nd in the HS Elite "school" scoring after winning the tournament last year. Tony Kubec and Jesse Calderon both took first place.
The top three wrestlers from last year's Canadian Junior Nationals were in Tony Kubec's group and he tech'd all of
them! His semi-final bout was against the Canadian "stud" in the group and a huge
crowd surrounded the mat to watch. Kubec had been ahead of the same wrestler last year when the official called Kubec pinned while attempting to gut wrench the opponent. This time there were no such calls as Kubec thoroughly dominated the match and threw him for 3 on the last move to win 11-0. Jess "Boom-Boom" Calderon wrestled well and hit some slick moves
as he moved through the field to win the 275 pound division. Roger Garcia and Josh McDonnell of Cascade both took 2nd place in their respective groups.
Rory Douglas and Brett Larson finished in 3rd and 4th place in the 63 kg
group (139 lbs) and Adam Wheeler placed 5th at 103.
The USA Everett Wrestling Team also attended the High School Elite tournament on Saturday and entered 7 Junior High age wrestlers into the HS Elite Division. They ended up taking 2nd in the HS "Club" division. Leading the way were Ross Lampers and Jonny Gilbertson who took first place at HS Elite 45 Kg and 41 Kg (98 & 91 lbs). Ross pinned his finals opponent in 19 seconds and also had a 16 second pin earlier in the tournament.
In the 41 Kg group USA Everett had three 7-8 grade wrestlers that weighed about 39 Kg ( 85lbs) going against 9-10 graders with a 2 kg (6.2 lbs) weight allowance! It was interesting watching Jonny Gilbertson, Kelly Kubec and Kai Bruno go against kids a head taller! In the first round Kelly had to wrestle a really tall, thin wrestler from Canada that he handled and beat. All three made it to the semi-finals where Kelly beat Kai and Jonny wrestled another "big" Canadian. Kelly and Jonny met in the finals with Jonny prevailing. It was the first time the two teammates had wrestled
each other in a tournament in 5 years. The two are also teammates at Eisenhower Junior High in Everett, WA. Kai came through the consolation bracket to wrestle the tall Canadian that Kelly beat in the first round for 3rd place. Kai was ahead 3-0 but made a mistake, got caught and pinned. He placed 4th earning valuable team points.
Zach Burnett worked his way through the field and placed 4th in the 48 kg group (105lbs). Kai VanLeuven and Patrick O'Neil wrestled well and had 3 or 4 wins each but came up just short of placing in 54 kg and 51 kg groups.
In women's competition Amberlee Montgomery of Tacoma wrestled Natasha from the USA Oregon club in the finals. I missed this bout as it was occurring in a separate gymnasium the same time as my son's semi-final bout. I talked to Brad Montgomery after and he said is was a great match with Amberlee winning 11-9. Brad said that after the 1st round all the spectators in that gym came over to watch the second round. I'm sure that was the case as those two girls wrestle at a whole different level from most of the girls in the tournament, or any girls tournament for that matter. Brad said that Amberlee got too high near the end and Natasha was on the verge of scoring 2 points and sending it into overtime when time ran out. I sure wish I could have watched this one!

December 8 - I was unable to accompany the team to the Northwest Team
Championships in The Dalles, OR but it sounds like it was a very exciting event
and I wish I had gone. Ron Lampers emailed me the following
report. A special thanks to him for writing this report.
Dave,
Last night we concluded the team championships at The Dalles. As Jonny has
likely already informed you, it was a dramatic conclusion that none of us had
really anticipated. The unlikelihood of us winning loomed large given the fact
that we initially had only seven wrestlers show up for USA Everett. At the last minute
we were able to patch together close to the contingent of 10 wrestlers
needed. Pee Wee's could not be included so that reduced our number back to 9
but we entered as a team anyway. I thought it would add interest to both the
kids and adults if we tried for the team trophy.
At the beginning we had to adjust Jonny up to 91lbs because he didn't have
anyone to wrestle at 84 lbs. Mike Johnson also had no one to wrestle so I
pushed him to 135 lbs. Well as things unfolded, the kids won some big matches
and at every cross road the door swung our way as we prevailed in some very
difficult matches. Andrew Johnson won a big match against Eric Starks and
later defeated Ben Williams to give him first place. Sammy Otto also defeated
a tough kid that ultimately allowed him to get 3rd place. Patrick O'neil came
from behind late in his final match in order to secure 2nd. Kevin, Ross,
Jonny along with the Johnson boys (Mike, Andrew, Jared), all took first place.
At 6:00 in the evening the team score was All Phase 35 points and USA
EVERETT 2nd at 34 points with one match remaining. The remaining match was
between Josh Villani from USA EVERETT and an All Phase kid. The winner of the
match would decide who won the team Trophy. Since Josh had just wrestled, he
had to wait the required time before he could begin his final match. The
match began with the All Phase kid making the first take down and thereby
going ahead 2 to 0. Josh then reversed him and it was tied up. The All Phase
kid came right back with another reversal to make the score 4 to 2. At the
beginning of the second round Josh took down and almost immediately reversed
the kid and put him on his back. The All Phase kid was on his back almost the
entire round when he shifted slightly and allowed Josh to pin him with time
running out. The final score was USA EVERETT 37 and All Phase 36.
TEAM USA EVERETT RESULTS:
Ross Lampers 1st @ 98 lb Cadet
Jonny Gilbertson 1st @ 91lb Cadet

November 18 - Results from Tulsa Kick-Off classic. This is all from memory
so, if I miss someone, just add a post with their information.
Everett did not have the type of results that we had hoped for with only two
weeks of practice. This is the “Kick-Off Classic” and the kids conditioning
and timing was not ready for this level. One of the Oregon dads that knows my
son watched him wrestle a match and told me that Jonny looked like he hadn’t
been training. I agree! Most of our dads would agree that our kid’s fit that
category, but at least we know where we are at now and can move on from there.
The turnout of "National level" wrestlers was up from what I have seen
in the past and the difficulty level of this tournament approached that of the
Tulsa Nationals in some divisions, at least what I saw in Div V. I don't know a
lot of wrestlers in the other divisions so I don't know about those.
Coach Boyd was the only one from the team to medal (they medal top 4 at the
Kick-Off) when he took 4th in the College-Open 285 division. His 1st loss was in
double overtime (he ran out of gas LOL). He then threw a few guys for pins and
made it back to the 3rd place match. He was injured during his last win and had
to injury-default the 3rd place match. It was his first competition since taking
5th in the 1997 US Senior Open Championships. The runner-up in that division was
Mike Christian, a USA Everett alumni who wrestles for OSU.
List with Division and weight:
USA Everett
Boyd Ballard College-Open 285 4th Injury-default
Jonny Gilbertson V-82 DNP 1-2
Kenny Kubec V-75 DNP Injury-default
Ross Lampers V-95 2-2
Patrick O'Neil V-115 DNP 0-2
Kevin O'Neil IV-80 DNP 3-2
Tory Kowalczyk V-175 DNP 2-1 Injury-default
Michael Lomsdalen V-95 DNP 0-2
Zach Zweifel III-64 DNP 3-2 (2 Injury-defaults)
Several kids from other Washington teams WERE ready for the action. Trevor
Hall wrestled well but lost in the Semi-Finals to Jimmy Kennedy of Illinois.
Trevor gave him everything he wanted in a 7-9 loss and had him on his back at
one point. Taylor Meeks was on his game and took first along with Jimmy
Belleville (I think he won, I saw his dad with a trophy). Shane Onufer also
wrestled well and placed 3rd.
Trevor Hall V-82 DNP 3-2
Shane Onufer IV-84 3rd Place
Taylor Meeks III-92? 1st place
Jimmy Belleville of Olympia took 1st I think but I don’t know the division.
Again, if I missed someone, it’s not intentional. Add to this list if you
know of others.
Next tournament is in Seaside, OR on Saturday, November 24, 2001. This is the
Saturday after Thanksgiving.
