July 14 - 2002 TheMat.com/ASICS Girls High School All-American Wrestling Team named

...The Second Team was also star-studded, led by USGWA National Champions Shani Alvarado and Stephany Lee, both of Moanalua High in Hawaii. Four of the Second Team members won USA Wrestling FILA Cadet National titles this year: Heather Martin of Keystone High in Ohio, Amberle Montgomery of Tahoma High in Washington, Deanna Rix of Marshfield High in Maine and Na’Tasha Umemoto of David Douglas High in Oregon.

July 14 -  Four USA Everett Wrestlers were chosen to compete for the Washington State teams at the USAW National Cadet and Junior Duals.  The Junior Duals are for wrestlers grade 9-12 and took place in Enid, Ok the last week of June.  The Cadet Duals were in Greeley, CO the following week and were for wrestlers age 15-16.  Both tournaments featured dual team format with the entire team having to advance to continue wrestling beyond the first pool rounds.

Nathan Decker of Sedro Woolley and Tony Kubec of Lake Stevens wrestled on the Junior team with great success.  Decker had a record of 11-3 in the 98 lb division while Kubec compiled a record of 12-2 wrestling at 130.  The team finished 9th in Freestyle and 11th in Greco-Roman.

Jonny Gilbertson of Everett and Mike Sewell of Bothell were both on the Cadet team on the trip to Colorado.  Gilbertson competed in the 91 lb division and had a record of 10-1 through the meet.  Mike Sewell was wrestling at 135 and had a record of 7-1.  The team lost their first two matches in Greco-Roman but then won seven in a row to finish in ninth place.  In the Freestyle they also took 9th place.

All four wrestlers will be representing Washington at the USAW Cadet and Junior National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships in Fargo, ND starting July 20th and running through July 28th.

June 24 - The USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the USAW Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman Western Regional in Butte, MT on 06/22/2002.  The tournament was well attended and broke the Butte record for a regional event with over 2200 entries for the two competitions.  USA Everett was led by SchoolBoy Double Champions, Kelly Kubec at 85 and Patrick O'Neil at 120.  For O'Neil it was his first Western Regional title while for Kubec it was his 6th Greco title in a row.  All told, Everett came back with 11 medals in Greco and 12 medals in Freestyle.  USA Everett also had the only female wrestler to place in the event!  JoMae Alwine was the only girl to medal in the entire tournament out of 1,940 participants as listed by the official tally. To the best of our knowledge, from midget to schoolboy there were not any other girls who placed. Ron Lampers said that there were not any who placed in the cadet division either. I was told that she has only been wrestling for 5 months, and "doesn't really know what she is doing on the mat."  I think she know quite a bit!

Three USA Everett regulars were notable in their absence at the Western Regional.  Tony Kubec, Nathan Decker and Jonny Gilbertson have all been selected to compete on the Washington Dual teams at the USAW National Duals.  Each state is able to send a group to compete as a team for the national dual team title.  Kubec and Decker will be on the Junior team (grade 9-12) competing in Enid,  Oklahoma June 26-29, 2002.  Gilbertson is part of the Cadet team (age 14-16) that will be competing at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO July 4-6, 2002.  Dave Gilbertson of Everett  is one of three coaches selected to accompany the Cadet team to the Duals tournament.  Another local wrestler from the Sultan club, Ryan Conley of Goldbar, was also chosen for the Cadet Team.

April 7 - USA Everett Wrestling Team sent a total of 14 wrestlers to battle at the Reno World of Wrestling Championships in Reno, NV on April 5-7,  2002.  With approximately 2500 wrestlers from 37 different states, the tournament set a record as it has become one of the premier wrestling tournaments in the nation for kids.  All of the Everett wrestlers gave it their best but at a tournament like this, it is extremely difficult to win more than you lose, let alone place.  Justin Davidson wrestled extremely well and won 8 or 9 matches.  He also had two, last second, 1 point loses, and didn't place.  A point here or there is the difference between first place and not placing.  Three members of the team managed to bring home medals which are given to the top six placers in each division.  For Kubec it was his 3rd time to place while for Gilbertson it was his fourth year in a row.  Medal winners are listed by age group.

8 and under: Joshua Villani, Everett, age 9, 4th at 64 lbs.
