June 25, 2001 - Gilbertson and Kubec lead USA Everett with first place finishes at USA Wrestling  Western Regional Championships.

Jonny Gilbertson, age 13, and Kelly Kubec,  age 12, both from Everett, WA won championships at the USA Wrestling  Western Regional Championships held in Pocatello, ID on June 19-23, 2001.  This is the kids Greco-Roman and Freestyle championships for the 11 western states and is a qualifier to attend the kids Nationals that will be held in Fresno, CA July 5-8, 2001.  Gilbertson won his championship in the Schoolboy 75 lb Greco-Roman division to claim his first title at Western Regional after several near misses over the past five years.  Kubec claimed the title in the Schoolboy 70 lb Greco-Roman division to go with four previous titles.  Kenny Kubec, Everett, age 13; Derek Garcia, Anacortes, age 9, and Tyson Metz, Anacortes , age 15, also made the finals in their divisions but ended up losing to finish in second place.  Patrick O'Neil, age 13 of Sedro Woolley took a bronze medal in his division with a third place finish.  USA Everett had a total of ten wrestlers finish with a top six finish at the tournament which attracted a record attendance of almost 2000 competitors for both styles.  Complete team results for Greco-Roman medallists are as follows:

Kubec, Gilbertson, Garcia and Metz all made the finals again in the freestyle portion of the tournament.  Kubec was behind early in the match but he came back hard in the final seconds of the title match to score and win 5-4.  The win gave him his second gold medal in the tournament.  Gilbertson was next up and wrestled the same opponent from Arizona that he had beaten by one point in the Greco-Roman final.  Gilbertson took the lead in the first 15 seconds of the match and kept the lead until his opponent scored at the final buzzer to win by one point and ended his chances of giving Everett two double champions.  Derek Garcia, Anacortes, age 9, and Tyson Metz, Anacortes , age 15, also made the finals in their divisions but ended up losing in the finals to finish in second place.  Kenny Kubec wrestled well and ended up in third place in his division.  Complete team results for freestyle medals are listed by age group:

June 10, 2001 - This weekend  we had a training camp that was open to anyone in the Northwest to get ready for the post-season tournaments.  It was a great opportunity to get together the kids (and parents) for a weekend of hard wrestling and some social fun.  We started out at Battle Ground High School Saturday June 9th at 10:00 am with about 65 kids.  They did some warm ups then broke into ironman groups. After about 1.5 hours we broke the room down into 4 sections and each section would have one match going for four minutes and they kept rotating through over the next hour with different matchups.  We broke for lunch at 1:00 and then at 2:00 they started the matches again with about 50 people left.  That went on for another three hours.  By that time half the room was sitting down icing somewhere on their body after six hours of top notch competition.  We broke for the day and a bunch of the people went to the hotel where several of them were staying.  The kids all had a great time swimming and just messing around together.  The parents had a good time getting to know  each other a little better and telling some stories (we heard some good ones!!).  The Smiths from Battle Ground were gracious enough to invite people over for a great Mexican dinner and about 30 of us had more time "for stories" and to give Todd Hall a bad time.  Everyone had a great time.  Hey Todd, thanks for being such a good sport!  Thanks for not making me sleep outside after all my comments at your expense.  Sunday morning we started again and were down to about 35 hard core wrestlers.  We did Greco for three hours.  By the end of that time most of the remaining kids were "done" but about 15-20 stuck around for another hour of freestyle matches.  I don't think anyone had anything left after that.  On the way home all five kids, and the coach, fell asleep while Ron Lampers and I worked on staying awake in the front street.

This was a great chance for Northwest kids to get ready for Western Regional and to see where they are at.  Every match they had was against someone very tough and if you survived the entire weekend then you should be ready to go in two weeks.  I counted 8 new bruises on my son's face tonight from the weekend.  He hasn't looked like that since we had Regional and Nationals back top back last year!  Hopefully Battle Ground, or someone else, will do this again next year.  If you get the chance to attend in the future, do it as this is the best way to get high quality mat time.  Some of our kids got 20-30 (or more) 4 minute matches in this weekend against state champs, All-Americans, National champs, etc.  That is hard to beat in two days!  Thanks so much to Todd Hall, Merle Crockett and all the other people who worked hard to put this event together.  Work hard over the next ten days and then let's "kick it" in Pocatello and Fresno!

Side note to Jerry:  What did you feed Tyler?  He was absolutely on fire!  I don't think I have ever seen him wrestle as tough and as hard as he did this weekend.

June 3, 2001 - Lisa Ward competed in the FILA Junior Women's Nationals/World Team Trials on 6/3/01 in Dayton, Ohio.  Lisa competed in the 54 kg group and placed 4th.

May 29, 2001 - Two members of the USA Everett wrestling team competed in the "Ironman World Wrestling  Championships" in Tulsa, OK over the Memorial Day weekend.  This tournament has wrestlers compete in three different styles of wrestling and receive points in each.  The competitor in each weight division with the most total points wins the "Ironman" award for his group. Ross Lampers of Monroe placed 3rd overall at 90 Schoolboy.  Patrick O'Neil of Sedro Woolley wrestled at 105 but did not place in the overall standings for his group.  Michael McAlister of Eastside club placed 3rd overall in the Novice 75 weight group.

May 20, 2001 - Coyte Cooper finished in 3rd place in the freestyle portion of the FILA Junior World Team Trials.  I didn't see any other Washington names in the top three.

May 19, 2001 -  Christian wins 2001 FILA Junior World Team Trials while Sommer, Cooper and Barnes both place.  Mike Christian a former USA Everett wrestler who now wrestles at Oklahoma State beat Mike Faust in a overtime, referees decision in the 97 KG (213.5lb) final to earn a spot on the US Junior World Greco-Roman team.  In a match many wanted to see last year the two top rated 215 pounders from high school (in 2000) finally met after their freshman year in college.  Last year Christian (Lynnwood, WA) won the High School National title (Faust wasn't there) and Faust was double National champ at Junior Nationals (Christian wasn't there).  I don't think they had met previous to the World Team Trials final.  Picture of GR champions, Christian is in the Orange T-shirt.

Coyte Cooper, formerly with USA Everett and now at Indiana took third place at 63 KG (138.5 lb) and Burke Barnes of the Lake Stevens Club place 5th at 58 KG (127.5lb).  Burke is a Junior in high school.  John Sommer of Spokane took 5th at 50 kg (110 lb).

Complete Greco results may be found at Themat

58 kg - (5th Place) - Nate Thorseson (Sharks) dec. Burke Barnes (Berzerker WC/Lake Stevens), 12-11
63 kg - (3rd Place) - Coyte Cooper (Hoosier WC/USA Everett) dec. Zack Lamano (TAC), 5-4 (Sidenote, it's a small world.  I ran into this guy's family skiing at Snowbird last December and rode up the chairlift with his dad.  His dad mentioned several kids they had wrestled from Washington over the years and here they are again wrestling Washington)
97 kg - (Finals) Michael Christian (Cowboy/USA Everett) ref. dec. Michael Faust (DSWC), 2-2 OT

The 18 man roster for  the 2001 TEAM WASHINGTON JUNIOR NATIONAL DUAL TEAM has been named and USA Everett has four representatives on it.  Listed at 114.5 are Matt Hadreas & Justin Davidson, 123 is Tony Kubec and at 165 we have Josh Decker .  The complete roster can be found at the WSWA web site.

May 17, 2001 - The Ranking for kids in Washington state can be found at Washington State Wrestler web site.  This has the Triple Crown Winners as well.   WSW also has the rankings for Cadets, Juniors and High School as well as the roster for Team Washington that is going to Junior Duals in Oklahoma.

May 5, 2001 - USA Everett Wrestling Team competed at the Washington State Greco-Roman
Championships in Fife, WA on May 5, 2001.  This is the first time the state has held a Greco-Roman State Tournament that also included kids.  In the past it was for Cadets and Juniors only but this year it was open for  Midget-Junior classes and served as a qualifier for Regionals and Nationals.  Everett placed a total of 21 wrestlers in the medals for a top 6 placing and ten finished as champions.  This is the first year that kids could have a "Triple Crown" by winning first in all three state championships; Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman.  This year USA Everett had four wrestlers get this distinction, Derek Garcia at Midget 70, Kelly Kubec at Schoolboy 70, Jonny Gilbertson at Schoolboy 75 and Nathan Decker at Schoolboy 90. If I missed anyone, please email me telling me who.  There were several near misses on the team when wrestlers won two of the titles and placed 2nd or 3rd in the other.  Cody Pohren came close to a Triple Crown but he too had a 2nd in folkstyle, losing to his teammate Derek Garcia. Everyone at Greco state had a good time and hopefully we can have even more kids from around the state attend next year.

4/29/01 - The state tournament seems to wear us out!  Here are some pictures of Halls and Gilbertsons after the 2001 Washington Kid's Freestyle meet.  Hall and Gilbertson won the 80 and 75 pound schoolboy divisions.

4/29/01 - USA Everett Wrestling Team rocked the house at the Washington State Kids Freestyle Championships in Sedro Woolley, WA on 04/29/2001 by placing 25 of the members into the medals at the tournament.  Of the medal winners, eight of them were state champs and three of those picked up their 5th state freestyle title.  The 3 wrestlers picking up their fifth title were Kelly Kubec, Jonny Gilbertson and Nathan Decker.  These three all competed in the Schoolboy division which is for wrestlers aged 12-14.  Josh Villani, Shane Hunt and Sam Ottow each won for the first time.  For Ottow it was a breakthrough after having near misses over the past few years when he finished as runner-up twice. Derek Garcia and George King each won a state title for the second time.  George King beat Jim Belleville of Olympia for the first time ever in the title match.

Medal winners at this tournament qualify to attend the Western Regional in Pocatello, Idaho. The top six finishers in state qualify to attend the Regional with wrestlers from 11 western states. Next week is the State Kid's Greco-Roman Championships in which the top six there will also qualify to compete in the Greco-Roman portion of the Regionals Tournament.  A top six finish also qualifies the wrestlers to go to Kids Nationals in Fresno, California two week after Regionals and several of the wrestlers will be competing there as well.

4/20/01 - Nice article on sportsmanship from themat.com this day.  I found it very interesting about the coach thinking the officials (and his friend) maliciously went against him when all they did was make what he thought was the correct decision.

4/15/01 - Matt Cooper of USA Everett placed 5th in the Greco-Roman portion of the USAW Western Junior Regionals this past week.  He also placed 3rd in the Freestyle event.

4/8/01 - USA Everett Wrestling Team sent an 18 man team to compete at the Reno "World of Wrestling Championships" in Reno, NV on 04/08/2001.  This event is rated as one of the top 5 tournaments in the nation for kid's wrestling and attracted approximately 2400 wrestlers from across the country. Although Everett had no champions this year, eight members of the team managed to place in the top five of the event and take a place on the awards stand at the end of the tournament. Medal winners from USA Everett are listed by age group.

10 & under: Derek Garcia, Anacortes, age 9, 3rd at 70 lbs

4/1/01 - Kids folkstyle results are posted for the just concluded USAW National Tournament.  Eric Starks of Vancouver, WA at Novice 90 took first place while his teammate Trevor Hall of Battle Ground, WA took 5th place at Schoolboy 75.  Trevor's two losses were to Zach Bailey (same kid who beat Jonny Gilbertson at Tulsa Nationals) and Jimmy Kennedy of Illinois (1999 Triple Crown Winner).   I see that the top two kids at SB 85 were two kids that I think I saw our own Nathan Decker tech last year, one at Waterloo and the other on the Ohio All-Stars trip to Washington state.  Next week is the Reno Wrestling Championships sponsored by World of Wrestling which has a huge turnout of west coast wrestlers.

3/28/01 -  USA Wrestling came out with their pre-season rankings and four USA Everett wrestlers were ranked in the top eight nationally.  The wrestlers were Jonny Gilbertson of Everett at 83.5 lbs, Nathan Decker of Anacortes at 94.5 lbs, Tony Kubec of Everett at 121 lbs and Michael Christian of North Seattle (currently at Oklahoma State University) at 213.75 lbs.  Several wrestlers from other clubs in Washington were also ranked.  Complete rankings may be found at Rankings.

3/24/01 - USA Everett wrestlers competed on 3 fronts this past weekend.  Some of our high school age wrestlers competed at the Northwest Junior Regionals in Battle Ground, WA.  This tournament features top of the line high school age wrestlers from WA, OR, CA, ID, MT, etc.   Justin Davidson, Tony Kubec and Josh Decker all finished in the top four at their weight group.  Lisa Ward won her women's division at Battle Ground last weekend.  She was also voted the Outstanding Wrestler for the women's freestyle division.
